“Excellent stay at busy wedding venue”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2014

My husband and I visited the Houw Hoek Inn on Saturday as we were guests at a wedding. Although I know of the hotel, I didn't expect much as its reputation is built on handling crowds for weddings and conferences, albeit in a beautiful natural setting. Previous experience taught me that often management aren't too concerned about service and facilities at these venues, as people usually HAVE to be there in any case.

So to say that we were pleasantly surprised was an understatement! The Houw Hoek doesn't pretend to be more than it is, but what they offer, is done well.

The rooms (we stayed in the newer ones) were big enough, well-heated on the coldest weekend of the year to date, the bathroom was adequate with hot water and decent pressure in the shower, a fireplace complete with wood already stacked in it, a nice bed, lots of coffee and tea ingredients etc.

You won't be visiting for the cuisine as the wedding menu was very generic, but I suppose that's chosen by the wedding couple, and one can't be too adventurous if you're cooking for a typically South African group.

Breakfast the next morning was buffet style, generous, and more than adequate with a stunning circular fire place heating up the venue.

All in all a good, familiy-orientated experience, set in a stunning valley with great views and extremely friendly staff. For a 3-star, you can't ask for more.

Room Tip: The new annex has clean, modern rooms although many people prefer the older historical section of th...

We recently spent a Sunday night at the Houw Hoek Inn. The hospitality is superb. With so many rooms you would never expect to get the personalised service that we got from the staff. They made our stay very special. The food is divine and the scones for afternoon tea are just out of this world! It was the perfect place to stay during winter with all the roaring fires and a lovely fireplace in our room too. We will definitely go again and also look forward to getting a group of friends together and staying over on a Saturday night for the dinner dance.

After a lovely stop at the refurbished hotel I had a pleasant drink on the stoep. Only when I got back to my car did I discover that I had left the mobile phone on the table.
I went back to find the table cleared but no mobile had been found... When I asked reception weather they could ask the waitress who cleared the table she just picked up the phone to make a call and shrugged.
Well Done! You can refurbish the place all you like but where is the old world honesty?

A beautiful hotel in a breathtaking setting. We went for lunch, and although the waitress was friendly, the rest of the staff in reception and restaurant were totally disinterested in their customers.
We were offered one small plastic menu between us, which contained a poor choice of meals. When served, the food was insipid and no thought had gone into presentation. When we asked for the menu again to choose a desert, we were then given an entirely different menu to the one earlier, (one menu each this time). This was a far better one than the one previously given. There were more interesting meals offered, and the menu itself was a bound one with a few pages, unlike the piece of plastic originally offered.
Unfortunately, this is an experience we will not want to repeat. Such a shame for such a beautiful place.

The setting is peaceful, serene and beautiful. The staff are friendly, well trained and eager to assist. The food is great and the dinner dance is a treat with a great mix of great dance classics through the ages. The rooms are comfortable without being opulent and the furniture is of a good quality and thus the Inn offers fantastic value for money as all the activities (putt putt, tennis, squash, volleyball etc.) are free of charge for guests. We were so impressed, we decided to make the Houw Hoek Inn our wedding venue!

We enjoyed our one night stay. The hotel is situated in a beautiful venue, and the personnel are very friendly and helpful. A full breakfast is offered with a wide variety of hot and cold items.

Do not expect ultimate luxury or complete privacy, as the rooms are close to each other. However, the hotel offers an old world and unsophisticated but very refreshing charming atmosphere. They have a dinner dance most Saturday evenings.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet non-smoking room, at the top.
