Spent a great weekend here with a large group of friends and families for husbands fortieth. Staff were helpful and friendly and bent over backwards.to accommodate all our needs including an awesome birthday party buffet and cake. Rooms are comfy and right by the sea and the food is plentiful - advise the fresh grilled fish, twas lush :-) Dave even produced a bouncy castle much to the kids delight. We had a lovely time and would recommend this place as good value for money and a great place for a break from Dar

I've been a frequent traveller to Zanzibar for many years, and would like to experience something else, while working in Dar es Salaam this year. So I decided to go for a weekend-trip. I didn't know much about Kilwa, but wanted to give it a chance since its only a 5 hours bus drive from Dar (leaving from Mbagala, a short drive from the city centre).

I fell in love with Kilwa Beach Lodge the minute I arrived. Located right on the beach and with a unique atmosphere. The staff was very friendly and we were offered a fresh cooled-down coconut as a welcoming drink! I felt the peace in this place right away. The rooms were nice and clean, and from the room I could step right on the beach. The food was amazing...fresh and tasty. The seafood they get daily from the local fishermen in the area.

There are a lot of activities to keep you busy in Kilwa, but if you want to relax like me, a long walk on the beach is amazing in itself! It was really amazing, and so untouched. Quit different from Zanzibar. I will always remember this weekend in Kilwa! And I am sure I will come back!

placed on unspoilt, tranquil, relaxed and clean area along the beach. Actually the whole beach is clean and when the tide goes out, reveals a large expanse of nothingness to go and potter over and wander aimlessly. No hassle and the few people on the beach are all friendly and welcoming. Down the beach and the fishing village is a bustle when the boats come in, which is interesting and again all friendly. Kilwa Beach Lodge is quite new and Dave the owner is trying hard to make his mark, but in a pleasant and non intrusive way. The place has a warm and friendly atmosphere, very welcoming and relaxing. The food is fresh, wholesome and plentiful. Choices are limited, determined by tide to some extent, although the team went out of their way to accommodate preferences. If you do not like seafood or are vegetarian this is covered in the choices with willingness to provide. Rooms are clean, tidy and sufficient. Basically the whole place is marked by friendliness, tranquillity and good food. Dave organises trips through his contacts for the ruins, fishing, boat trips etc. and so there are things to do. All in all a top spot and recommended great escape from Dar.

Room Tip: the metal sprung loungers are to die for, so book the room with these or ask for them.

Kilwa Beach Lodge is located on a beautiful and silent beach: only a few tourists come in the south of Tanzania and you can really live the unspoilt nature and observe the typical life of the local people. I spent here with my girlfriend three dreamy days at the beginning of August.
It was wonderful waking up at sunrise because the colour, the sounds and the landscape are extraordinary and unique and you can't ship them escape. Waking up at sunrise also because of the curiosity of observing many local people, men and women, shouting and walking through the sea during the low tide in front of the close fisherman village. But it was only the curiosity that make me up: if you want, you could continue to sleep. A light breeze enter your bedroom and the voice of fishermen is only a distant sound; besides the mattresses in Tanzania are the best in the world!
It was wonderful running on the white deserted beach and enjoying in sudden race with local guys;
going to Babu's bar for a drink before dinner and coming back from the restaurant walking under a starry sky that you can't see everywhere.
Unforgettable the juice and fruit of our breakfast.
You can reach the little city Kilwa Masoko by little three-wheels taxi called "baggiaggi", but also by feet (30 minutes of walk) or asking to the staff.
In our three days-stay, during the afternoon the wind always grew up a bit: I don't know if it was due to the season, however it wasn't a problem and you could continue to do your holiday things, such as sunbathing, swimming, reading a book...
The staff is very kind and Dave and Lily make you fell at home: choosing the better food (they buy fish directly from the fisherman of the close village), organizing the trip to visit the close beauties, for everything you need.
We stayed in a front en suite banda with bathroom inside: the position was excellent, only ten metres away from the sea, but also all the other bandas are nice and close to the sea. There's not hot water in the bathroom, but it never was a trouble because the water wasn't cold, only a bit warm.
Besides that, it's admirable the support to "Kiyodea project" for helping local people and making logistic support for scientific studies about nature.
If we hadn't booked the flight for Mafia, we would have been at Kilwa Beach Lodge many other days...

Stayed here for two weeks in August, what an amazing place to stay. The bandas are right on the beach and the view of the sea was calming and beautiful. Each banda is cleverly designed with extras such as bookcases, plenty of hooks, tables and safari chairs as well a deck chair outside. The bandas are thoroughly cleaned every day and it was a joy walking into a fresh room. Even the design of the bandas is unique with interesting building methods used such as the windows made from glass soda bottles. The food was homemade and delicious with Swahili dishes such as kachumbari and more English dishes such as lobster cocktail. Perhaps my favourite part of the entire lodge was the bar area (Babu's Bar) with hammocks to kick back and relax in, as well as bar stools that made me feel tall! The staff are all friendly and I felt totally safe and comfortable throughout my stay. A few day trips were efficiently organised for me as well, including snorkelling and sailing in a dhow. The location is peaceful and unspoilt - the tide comes in far enough to swim every day and there is plenty to do when it goes out, walking to the spit, the mangroves, looking for sand dollars and rock pooling. I would definitely recommend staying at Kilwa Beach Lodge.

My sister and I stayed here for two weeks in August, we had heard the place was quite new so thought to try it out.

We had a wonderful, tranquil stay in what felt like a beach paradise. It was the perfect place to relax, unwind and distress after a busy year! Each day was made of long walks on the quiet beach; chatting to the friendly staff; reading a book in the hammocks or visiting the local fishing village. The owners, Lily and Dave were very helpful and friendly, arranging excursions such as sailing trips on the local ‘dhows,’ trips to the ruins and camping at the hippo pools. The food was also wonderful, with lots of fresh fish (the fisherman would walk up to the kitchen in the morning with the daily catch!). The bandas despite being simple, were reasonably priced, clean with comfortable beds, good mosquito nets and generally constant electricity.

All the best to Dave and his family, I’m sure that the place will thrive over the next couple of months. Definitely worth a visit and my sister and I are looking forward to visiting soon.
