“Magic Mwangaza!”
Reviewed 6 November 2013

Magic, magic, magic - walked in to the most amazing open plan, high makuti-roofed living area with a view to die for, bar and pool - yes indeed. Lovely setting looking over the mangroves with clear blue waters and layers of hills as a back drop propping up the setting sun in a quiet, undisturbed spot where the gentle breeze relaxes the soul in a heavenly pool after a day of everything or nothing. Just simply time out, laid back no pressure, something really special, a home from home welcome, friendly staff, great hospitality, wonderful food (best south of Dar!), and great interactive hosts full of interesting stories and adventures in Africa's remotest places. The history, the beaches, walks, birds, and snorkelling, its all there and then home to a private open spacious A frame banda built with care and detail, all the small important things in mind that does not leave you wondering why you came here in the first place - top notch. We will be back to this hideaway and small piece of heaven - thank you Warren, Jean, and all the staff for a truly memorable stay, and of course superb Tanzanian hospitality - we were very sad to leave.

Mwangaza is well worth a visit. There is something for everyine in this magical place, whether it be fishing, exploring the ancient ruins, sunset cruises through the mangrove water ways, relaxing on secluded white sandy beaches, snorkelling, boating, relaxing at the pool or sipping ice cold drinks while watching the spectacular sunset views. Every visit is different, the only constant being an all round great time. The service is top notch, you avoid the crowds of other beach destinations on the East African coast and all of the staff make you feel as though you have come back to your holiday house, not a hotel. The food is also excellent and the rooms are spacious, filled with personal touches, and really allow you to take in the view and fresh sea air. I can't wait for our next visit!

Room Tip: All the rooms have a view and they're all pretty much the same

Walking into the lodge, seeing the mangroves and estuary unfold beneath you, you get the feeling you've found something really special. Built from scratch with local materials, the open bandas and spacious living areas feel more like a family home than anything, and the place is run by the most welcoming and fascinating young couple. The laid back, luxurious setting and sunset dips in the pool were complemented by action-filled days - tramping around the most awesome ruins on the islands, snorkelling around the reef and the mangroves... and Jean even took me fabric shopping in the town's market! With real coffee, real butter, ice cold beer and some of the best food i've ever tasted, coupled with such warm Tanzanian hospitality, i was so very sad to leave.

Words don’t do justice to Mwangaza.

One has to experience this magical place AT LEAST once in their lifetime.
You are spoilt for choice in this part of the world. Whether you want a chilled day by the pool, sipping a cold one over-looking the mangroves, or an adventure-packed one on the water, visiting islands and ruins in and around the area, dropping a line, snorkeling in the middle of the ocean… Nothing is impossible with this team.

As far as fishing goes… paradise! The allure of throwing the biggest popper in your bag waiting for that monster GT to arrive is irresistible, and believe me, you know it when he arrives...

The local and offshore knowledge Warren has of the area, is infinite. Consider yourself in good hands.
Watch the sun set from the deck over a perfect day at Mwangaza Hideaway, while enjoying one of the best meals you will ever have (guaranteed!) cooked by the lodges' finest chefs.

Thank you to Warren and the team for an awesome stay. Cannot wait to return to this special place and it’s people.

We had the very lucky experience of staying with Jean and Warren at the Mwangaza Hideaway Lodge recently. From the initial contact until the final goodbye we had a pleasant time. Jean and Warren make it seem so effortless and this lends the place a very relaxed and homely air. The accommodation was great with wonderful views over the mangrove swaps and the sun setting over water is novel and lovely to view from the swimming pool.

The day trip to Kilwa Kisawani was a highlight and should be visited considering it's importance in East African trade and it's the World heritage site status.

The food was delicious and the barbecued fish that had been caught by the hosts was heaven.
I heartily recommend a stay here and can't wait to return.

Looking over the waterways of Kilwa is something else. Square Kilometers of Mangrove forest and deep channels form an amazingly beautiful bay with many sidearms. Mwangaza is the only lodge that is located facing this interesting natural beauty. Everything can be explored by boat and since the bay is 100% flat even people that get seasick can enjoy being on the ocean within.
For fishermen its perfect. Get out of the bay and you catch fish. Even i did ;-)

Certainly my first choice accommodation in Kilwa. Great Bungalows and superb food. Good service and nice chill out area.

I enjoyed every day there.

Room Tip: Any of the Bandas ! They are all quiet and have enough privacy.
