We have just returned from an absolutely fantastic week at Le Buisson, where we celebrated New Year with family and friends. The property itself is a grand old chateau down a quiet private lane. As other reviewers have noted, the house has an amazing rustic charm, and it essentially feels like you are staying in a grand family home. There are personal touches everywhere which help to make you feel truly welcome. There are toys, board-games, table football and table tennis in the house to keep the children happy, and plenty of quiet spaces for the adults to get away for a bit of peace and quiet too! One of my favourite things to do on an early frosty morning was to sit in the study, sipping coffee and looking out at the grounds, or relax in the drawing room whilst reading a good book! There were 14 of us in our group and we always had more than enough space; there are also 7 bedrooms and a lovely large kitchen. We were also really happy that even in the depths of a sub-zero winter spell, the property was always incredibly warm and cosy. The heating is fantastic and it made all the difference to us, especially with young children. Perhaps our only criticism, and it is a very small one, is that it would have been useful to have had a DVD player and a couple of other small basics such as a larger kettle and perhaps some more storage in the bedrooms - but these are really small points and did not detract from our enjoyment!
The chateau has a wonderful garden with it's own large ornamental pond, and a separate barn in the grounds housing a decent sized heated swimming pool and jacuzzi. This was such a bonus and the kids adored playing it in every day. I am sure in the summer they would adore playing for hours in the gardens too, but it was very frosty and cold whilst we were there!
The local area is beautiful and we enjoyed a number of long country walks. Although there is nothing really in the local village (St Christophe sur Conde) the house is only a few miles away from Montfort where there is an Intermarche and a number of bars and shops. There are also some absolutely beautiful towns and villages in the vicinity within easy reach by car so we enjoyed several trips out to these.
Laurent, the owner, was a fantastic host, always being incredibly helpful and efficient. All communications in advance of our trip were good and Laurent responded swiftly to our emails. On arrival he met us at the house to show us round, and then would visit each morning to look after the pool - but was always very unobtrusive. He also offered advice about the area and was swift to reply to any questions or issues we had. It was an absolute pleasure dealing with him, and we were grateful for his kindness and assistance.
I can speak for all of our party when I say this was perhaps the best New Year's break we have had in a rental property, and we would be delighted to return. I can heartily recommend Le Buisson to anyone else looking for a charming holiday in a grand rural chateau. Thank you Laurent. We will be back again!
If you want a wonderful rustic french place to stay this is the one. Countryside is beautiful and not too far from a good beach. The indoor swimming pool was brilliant for the small kids as the weather was not good every day. We had a great time, but the company we went with really made our holiday. Would love to go back to this place.
