“Hardly memorable”

We stopped in Woldia on our way north from Lalibela. While stopping just there is a reasonable choice, logistically speaking, the town and the hotel lack any particular merit (apart from being the birthplace of the milliardaire Zaki ElAmoudi, but it doesn't show). The hotel is looming, oversize, and shabbily kempt. The food (dinner, breakfast) tolerable. The room was not too clean and generally uninspiring. Water was available part of the time (been warned that this problem is endemic to Woldia town, but a hotel this size should have invested in a water tank!) We were not offered (nor made aware of) the bungalows.

Fortunately we were given tukul number 1 in the grounds of this large, rather shabby-looking hotel.
The accommodation in the tukul was very good - 2 large beds, satellite TV, 2 easy chairs and a large bathroom with a good, hot shower. It is at the back of the garden where they grow lots of vegetables.
We found the staff very helpful and friendly. The food choice was limited but our meal was reasonable and we enjoyed a good breakfast with eggs cooked freshly to order.
Unlike some other reviewers, I would recommend staying here if you are in Woldiya - but just ask for a tukul instead of a room in the main building!

They have also bungalows or "villas" behind the main building and this have much better quality then usual hotel rooms. Nothing special but room and bathroom were clean and you have private water boiler at every bungalow so you don't have to worry about hot water. The place could be very noisy due to location at narrow valley. All the music from numerous bars would be echoing around you until closing times at about 3 or 4 at night. All truck drivers start engines at 5 o'clock.
I didn't use restaurant for more than breakfast. There are plenty of cheaper restaurants and numerous bars on the main road just out of the hotel complex.

The best hotel on Weldiya. Cockroach and Mpsquito infested.
Noisy, squallid, decrepit.
Unfriendly receptionist.
Over priced.
Avoid staying over in Weldiya, if you must, this hell hole is the less worst.

this hotel was sooo ugly..

the served cutlery was dirty, the food i orderd (spaghetti) was very oily and non edible,
they had no wireless internet though the lady on the reception told me they would have..,
there was not water in the wooms (just during the night) and no electricity...

Let me tell you, if you are not forced to stay in this hotel (cause of car/transport problems) then leave it alone. Your best bet would be to not even stay in Woldiya / Weldiya...

We stopped in Woldia after a bus from Mekele which terminated there, on our way to Lalibela. Probably should have taken up the offer of one of the guys who were offering lifts, but we thought it was too late.

Got a room in the Lal hotel because others were full. Got an indifferent twin room which hasn't been maintained in many years. Shower was a trickle, bathroom door was broken and TV didn't work. All for about twice the price of the neighbouring hotels.

Food was a bit naff. I had shiro bozena which was below par and my partner had tomato soup which was from a can and not heated properly.

Overall we found the hotel's and the town's attitude to us "faranjis" to be the least welcoming of all of our trip through africa.
