I spent two nights here with my boyfriend during a driving holiday in Provence. We were both disappointed with the Real Plantain and left it feeling pretty duped. It's a small, family run operation and while I'm sure the hosts tried to ensure we enjoyed ourselves, it sadly was not a great experience for us.
While the decor is 'unusual' to say the least (animal print bedding, toy monkeys hanging from the curtains) it was comfortable, though the shower in our room had no pressure at all and only dribbled at us.
The inclusive breakfast was hilariously bad though. For a country famed for delicious cheeses, fresh produce and baked goods I couldn't understand why we got cheap, packaged croissants and weird tubs of processed desserts like custard and jelly for breakfast. It was quite weird, and while it did make us laugh it was far from tasty.
Their dogs barked constantly and would bark and run and jump on us every time we entered or exited the building. I saw the child of another guest visibly terrified by this, yet nothing was done to keep the dogs away. One of the dogs 'playfully' bit me and broke the skin on my hand, it was painful and unpleasant, but still nothing was done to keep the dogs away from the guests, nor were the dogs mentioned on the website – something I'm sure people would appreciate knowing.
All of these things would have been fine and completely forgiven if we didn't get such an unexpected bill at the end of the 2 nights. I appreciate that the host's English is poor and my French non-existent, but I did check twice via email that the price for 2 people sharing for 2 nights was €110. As we checked out I was told it was actually €110 per night. Perhaps we were naive about the price, but we had paid similar, even cheaper prices in better accommodation in other parts of France. If he had clarified the price when we arrived, we would not have stayed at all, as once we saw the room and how little the location had to offer, we would gladly have moved on, knowing it was not worth the price tag. I was very embarrassed and felt completely duped. Luckily (or perhaps not) my partner had enough cash to cover the full price but I often wish he didn't as I don't think if was a fair price for what we got.
The setting was nice and had time and weather permitted we probably would have made better use of the space. But other than some helpful chaps in a nearby pizza bar, Peyrolles-en-Provence had very little to offer in terms of distraction. I must also say that the host's poor, beleaguered wife was very pleasant and friendly. But I do not see how this place can justify the price tag, especially as there are so many better places to stay in Provence at that price (and less).
