We recently stayed at Kupu Kupu for 2 nights at the end of our honeymoon in Bali. We decided to push the boat out for the last 2 nights (the icing on the cake) after reading reviews on this site and researching other top end places to stay in Ubud. Overall we came away feeling disappointed with the experience. Kupu Kupu is truly in a glorious location and has a magnificant setting. It is a fantastic spot and the Mango Tree spa is fabulous. The staff are incredibly friendly and even the staff clearing the walkways and paths stop to greet guests. After reviewing the pics on the Kupu Kupu website we booked a Duplex Pool Villa. The villa we were given did not match up to the pictures on the website and was far less spaceous that we had been led to assume. There was a musty damp smell on opening the door - and we had been given twin beds (fixed together) with 2 mosquito nets. Our options were either to try and join the nets between us or risk getting bitten - not the best for a honeymoon couple ! Kupu Kupu offers a butler service. Our butler showed us around our room on arrival and then after that we didn't see him again. There seems to be no difference between butler service and normal room service / front desk services. Kupu Kupu offers a butler service. Our butler showed us around our room on arrival and then after that we didn't see him again. There seems to be no difference between butler service and normal room service / front desk services. To be honest - our experience of both was not always satisfactory. On our first night we ordered dinner in our room which came promptly and was really enjoyable. However we then ordered extra ice and for somone to pick up our tray - neither of which happened. The front desk booked us a trip to the Elephant Safari park (it's great) 2 days prior to our arrival. They told us we would be collected at 815 / 830. We waited over an hour before a driver arrived at 920 - the front desk took no responsibility for the fact that we were waiting so long and offered no alternative means to get us to the safari park. It was only when my husband started getting annoyed that they decided to phone the transport organiser on our behalf.

We didn't find the food always up to the standard of the restaurant setting and the prices charged. The Indonesian dishes we ate on our first night were enjoyable. On the second night we ate in the restaurant and found everything covered in sauce and had clearly been standing for sometime. My steak was overcooked - the waiter did offer to replace it but to be honest I had no confidence that the kitchen would do a better job second time round.
