Been delaying putting this review on as had been waiting on an email from Simon Roberts from Rockliffe which was due during February explaining what was due to be corrected for this New Years event. But nothing has been received. Continuing the very disappointing service we received on the evening.

My wife and I attended the Rockliffe Mistletoe Ball on New Years Eve and sent the following email to them following our attendance.

Before I start I’d like to say that we’re both huge fans of Rockliffe, have visited the Spa on numerous occasions and stayed overnight many times. The Spa and hotel are superb and we can't recommend enough. We have dined in both the Orangery and the Brasserie also and having wonderful experiences recommended you to family and friends.

Based on previous experiences is the reason I’d like to pass on our personal experiences of the New Years eve event, which was made even more disappointing based on the high regard we have for Rockliffe in general.

Upon arrival, the reception room was very full, to the point where the only room to stand was near the door entrance right next to the band making conversation very difficult. The canapés only made it to our side of the room once whilst we waited. The time it did make it the contents were just a handful of the selection left to sample. As it was it just my wife and myself it seemed that the larger groups were given priority.

When we made it through to the main function room we found that our pre ordered drinks hadn’t been processed even though the rest of the table’s had, which was very embarrassing. I had to go back to the bar area to reprocess the order for the drinks and wait back at the table for them to be delivered, and even though I’d asked for the Prosecco to served first and the Rioja to come later they were both opened and delivered to the table at the same time.

The table layout and number of people / tables in the room meant that our chairs were next to the main room thoroughfare meaning we were constantly knocked all evening, there was really too many people / tables for that room.

The meal served was disappointing, my wife complained about the lack of lobster in her lobster for starters, and our beef main course was disappointing to say the least. Whilst serving one of the servers dropped a knife on my wife without any apology. Our neighbours on the table all agreed the food wasn’t up to the standard we’d expected.

I appreciate that the servers / waiters / waitresses were extremely busy, but myself and neighbours on the table all complained that it was impossible to catch someone’s eye. The lady next to me tried several times to get some water without any success.

The music played by the DJ was cringe worthy at best, with the likes of “Jive Bunny” and the like just not fitting for the venue or experience we’d expected and paid for. The band were very good, just not on long enough as the DJ’s choice of music before and after midnight was just terrible.

The piper seemed to be rushed in (as he battled to get through the compressed table layout) and the bacon sandwiches which we left the main room for were non existent and apparently all gone.

Overall and having experienced other New Years balls at (what we would have considered inferior) venues we expected nothing but the best and a wonderful experience, we left feeling extremely disappointed and along with others seated at our table stating we’d not be back for future New Years events.

Room, spa, dining experiences all faultless.

Lady on reception very helpful and provided full walking map of the area with routes of various lengths. As our stay was a birthday treat chocolates were in the room on arrival and the room was spotless. Up to date and well appointed rooms with good selection of magazines.

Dined at the spa and at the orangery and whilst different in character food and service were very nice.

Spa very clean and well maintained.

Will be back and will recommend.

Beware when trying to book a room here if you have young children with this establishment.
Looked on Hotel booking sites to get a price and then called the hotel to book direct.
Reservations lady was dreadful. First "we don,t have any rooms available at all"--then when I tell her that several web sites are advertising plenty of space (including their own!!) all of a sudden a room "with limited floor space" suddenly becomes available?? Then when I tell her that other room types are available on the afore mentioned sites (including their own!!) all of a sudden a suite becomes available. The lady who answered my call really was not interested in offering any form of service-- anhd you could actually hear her sigh when my young son was mentioned as being part of the trip--extremely poor!!
Left with the feeling that children are not welcome here???
On the other hand similar calls to nearby Rudding Park and Raithwaite Hall are answered professionally and any queries are answered with exceptional guest service where potential guests with young families are encouraged to stay.

The hotel is beautiful and the spa fantastic. Great welcome and attentive reception and concierge. We also enjoyed pre dinner drinks in the cocktail bar which for a special occasion lived up to expectations. We had a suite in the old hall (209) although large, comfortable, clean and well equipped, it lacked character so that was a little is disappointing for us as we expected when booking a room in the old hall that it would be original and characterful otherwise we would have booked a standard room, so we could have been in a modern hotel anywhere, but that is a matter of taste I suppose. The food in the orangery was a bit mixed, we expected better - it was OK but nothing special for the price which is a real shame as we were on the "gourmet" package. Limited vegetarian and special order breakfast pancakes dry and rubbery, a bit hit and miss.

We could not have wanted anything more, our wedding was an absolute dream. Rockliffe Hall itself is such a beautiful hotel when stunning grounds, between the bridal party we stayed in four different types of room. All of which were very spacious, clean and had a real element of luxury. The spa is fantastic and has good facilitites. The food at Rockliffe is excellent, we enjoyed the best afternoon tea I have ever had, great room service and the boys headed to the clubhouse, despite this only being a two minute stroll the hotel arranged transport to and from. During the whole wedding experience every member of staff could not do enough to help and were all so friendly. The day ran to perfection and we honestly cannot thank the hotel enough for ensuring it was this way. I would advise anyone who is planning their wedding to visit Rockliffe Hall. I would also recommend the hotel for breaks. We strectched our wedding budget slightly to have Rockliffe but it was worth it and we are so glad we did. If you book rooms a few weeks in advance you can get them for a bargin price however at full price they are still worth every penny. The suites are fantastic, we have stayed in three different suites and each has been great. On arrival at the hotel a month after the wedding for my birthday we were greeted and told our room had been ugraded to a suite, there was then chocolates, champagne and a birthday card waiting. Another perfect stay, again with great service.

This is by far the best hotel we have ever stayed in.
I booked the 'Midweek Gourmet Getaway' offer as a surprise for my wifes 40th birthday and coupled it with a 'Dreamy Arrival' spa package at a total cost of £370, not cheap but it was worth every penny.
The staff were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble for them and we were made to feel comfortable and special from the moment we arrived. The concierge took us through to reception to check in whilst he parked our car and brought our luggage in. The receptionist then took us along to the spa and introduced us to the staff there who gave us a welcome drink before explaining all of the spa facilities to us. The spa is fabulous and the food in the Brasserie was excellent.
Our room was stunning, we had an 'Old Hall Suite' as part of the package overlooking the golf course and like the rest of the hotel it was spotlessly clean and fabously equiped.
We had dinner in the 'Orangery' and again the food and service was exquisite we could not fault a thing.
After breakfast in the morning we again made use of the spa facilities before we had to check out at 11am.
We could not fault this hotel, the staff, facilities and food were all exceptional, its not cheap but it is definetly worth every penny and we cannot reccommend it enough.
Hopefully we will be returning later in the year for our anniversary!

Room Tip: From what we saw there are no bad rooms at this hotel.

Booked a last minute stop after leaving a filthy hotel. Blew the budget on a £250 per night suite. Wow have never stayed in such an amazing place. Apart from a snooty doorman the staff were exceptional. They were so friendly, accommodating and professional. The hotel was spotlessly clean. We tried out the spa and gym - what an amazing place. Breakfast was equally impressive- only niggle is that they pour the OJ (freshly squeezed)for you, so you have to wait to have your glass refilled. Have never seen so much fresh fruit choice. I had a vegetarian fry which was delicious - even came with baked beans!, my husband had the eggs Benedict, which he said was delicious. They also serve fresh tea- made with tea leaves. Hubby was really impressed as he is a tea snob!. The grounds are as immaculate as the hotel, and after checking out we spent an hour in the drawing room relaxing. The price is a bit over the top, but I couldn't fault any aspect of the service. I hope the management acknowledge how wonderful their staff are as this really made the break exceptional.

Room Tip: Check out their website for offers. Any of the rooms are beautiful, but the rooms in the old part ar...
