I stayed with my sister over New Year 2013/2014 and we shared a reasonably spacious twin room. We enjoyed our stay but there were so many little things which let this hotel down.

On the good side, the room itself and the bathroom were a decent size. The breakfast was good, with plenty of variety and the cooked breakfast was always nicely cooked and presented. We took advantage of the spa facilities and had a very nice massage each for a reasonable price, however, the cappuccino I ordered to relax with after my massage was undrinkable. Unfortunately we didn't get chance to use the pool but it did look very inviting.

The New Year's Eve party was good too, including the room decoration, with an absolutely stunning main course. The other courses were average / good and we thought the addition of a glass of bubbly as part of the meal would have made it so much more special.

In contrast we felt the restaurant was sadly lacking; with extremely slow - verging on bad - service from the waitress; and very mediocre food. The head waiter was, however, helpful, friendly and extremely efficient.

Our room, whilst it was tidied every day, was not cleaned properly; sheets were pulled up over the bed roughly, glasses left unwashed and some days bins not emptied. The radiator worked nicely though and we had a nice view of the beautiful gardens.

The bathroom had an empty tissue box which we left on the floor and was just picked up and replaced by the washbasin each day - without the addition of issues! We were also left only very cheap shampoo and shower gel, and even that only on the first day - after that we had to ask each day for more. There was just one small bottle of each, despite our booking being for 2 people in the room. There was no conditioner or body lotion (but we did see much nicer looking toiletries on the cleaners' trolley - sadly on the day we were leaving or we would have asked specifically for these).

Sadly our shower did not produce any hot water. And, yes, we should have reported this on day 1, but surely this is something the cleaners should check regularly. It wasn't too much of an inconvenience as we both enjoy taking baths, but really is a basic necessity in a hotel of this supposed caliber. We did report this as we left and the kind receptionist apologised and said she would immediately have someone look at the problem.

The general cleanliness of the hotel wasn't too bad apart from the blue plastic bags littered along the corridor floors at odd intervals.

One particular annoyance was that on our last full day at the hotel (the day before our check-out date) we had several phone calls from one of the receptionists asking when we were checking out. Twice we had to explain that we were not checking out till the next day. On arrival back at the hotel, the other receptionist was also baffled by this as she looked up our reservation and said that it clearly stated our check-out date as the following day.

All in all it wasn't a bad stay, but not the luxury we'd hoped for on our New Year's treat.

There is a reason why I am a loyalty member of the Macdonald Hotel group, and it is because all staff have been trained very well in customer service, and the quality of the rooms is excellent. This stay was no exception. We booked in advanced for a family room. The room was very spacious, and the receptionist rang me mid-week to confirm that I would like a cot, and there was a cot in the room on arrival. It was the same receptionist who was present upon our arrival. She was very welcoming and courteous. She does deserve specific recognition - her name is Alison and she is the head receptionist. She was very helpful throughout our stay, and because of her pleasant demeanour, we would most certainly return for a second stay. The other aspect of Macdonald hotels which makes us want to stay every time is the breakfast. It really is fantastic. There is so much selection and the cooked breakfast is wonderful, particularly the black pudding (wherever they source it from, please keep it coming!). We also had dinner in the hotel, this again was perfect. Excellent staff all round. We will definitely be returning. I am sure my children will want to go to Chester Zoo again in the near future. The swimming pool and gym facilities are also excellent.

We recently stayed at the hotel for two nights. We had a very spacious room that was clean and well maintained.the hotel staff were very friendly and a very nice breakfast. We made full use of the swimming pool and the leisure facilities and were amazed at how quiet the hotel was.
We took advantage of the half term special offer and we will visit again soon

Hotel was the usual clean, friendly and efficient style that we have come to expect from Macdonald. The rooms were well equipped with everything you'd need. Hotel entrance is a bit hard to spot so watch it when approaching. The breakfast choice was great although the toast was a little cold but otherwise the choice was great. Staff were all great and everyone was really friendly and helpful. The only slight disappointment was the leisure facilities - area was a little tired and a jacuzzi would have been nice (refurb is coming soon though). Pillows were feather - would prefer a choice but to be fair we were shattered and didn't ask. Other than this, the hotel is a great base to explore Chester, Liverpool and the surrounding area. Well done Macdonald - another great hotel.

A fabulous hotel where the service of the staff was superb. Nothing was too much trouble and the food was excellent food. The surroundings are lovely and the swimming pool, sauna and steam room were all well kept and refreshing.

Well having got a nice two night stay at the craxton wood hotel I was all ready for my first visit to the Chester area was not disappointed .the staff were all smiles and friendly and the service was 2nd to none. I wanted to pop into Liverpool for the day as its was only 30 mins up the railway and got some great advice from the morning receptionist. the hotel has some great grounds and is in the middle of the sticks . but there are buses that stop outside the hotel and the local train station (capeinhurst )is only 7 mins by taxis .I have read other reviews about having down stairs rooms .but mine was fine I slept like a log on both nights and injoyed breakfast in bed .as I suffer with a bad back the bath in room 110 was big enough for me to have a nice soak which worked wonders .I can not fault this gem of a hotel and am looking forward to returning one day............thanks again for the stay .

It would've been a lovely hotel to stay at had I gotten a good night's sleep! The hotel surroundings are quite pretty and the swimming pool is a decent size with a nice relaxing sauna and steam room attached, and the gym was pretty good too. The classic double room we stayed in was a decent size (although the desk was in an odd position so we had to rearrange the furniture) but the hospitality tray was well stocked with a variety of teas and the bed was really comfortable. However, this was sadly spoilt by the creaky floorboards in the room above us, it sounded like there was a herd of elephants up there! I've never known anyone to walk about so much in a bedroom and that's up to them if they want to, but it shouldn't affect my sleep! To be fair, the hotel did give us a discount but it's a shame they weren't a Premier Inn as I would've got a full refund.

The restaurant food was great (although a little pricey) but this was tarnished by the poor service. They'd firstly forgotten our side order and then they didn't offer us any sauces or anything else, which I thought is normal practice. When our side order did arrive after prompting, the waitress said the sauce would be brought by another waiter. This didn't arrive so they had to be reminded again. I wouldn't normally mind but it wasn't busy and it probably wasn't helped by the fact that we had a variety of waiters/waitresses attending to us rather than just one dedicated one. I think service would've been better if this had been the case.

All in all, it was a nice hotel but there are definitely aspects that could be improved.

Room Tip: Don't have a ground floor room!
