“What a View”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 July 2011

Book a room with a sea view and you will want to return. We had room 6 not so much a sea view but more like being part of the harbour. Yes the rooms are a little tired. Yes the walls and ceilings are a bit thin but everyone retires early so its no problem. Yes the bed is comfortable so you sleep well after a days walking on the Isles. The breakfasts are excellent. The evening meals are good and if you have booked half board and want to eat out they will knock the cost of the missed meals off the bill. The staff are great and it is a quiet location yet only a two minute walk to the lively pub if you want it. You will love the lounge in the roof, We will be back if only to see Elvis the gull.

We all know hotels which claim to be near the sea and are actually the other side of a busy main road or at the top of a cliff. Schooners is actually on the edge of the sea. Its position is perfect overlooking the little harbour at St Mary's and when you sit outside the bar / lounge, you can actually wriggle your toes in the sand. So its location is superb. We spent a very happy five days in the Scillys and Schooners provided everything we could have wished for. Our room was a generous size overlooking the sea. All the usual bedroom and bathroom facilities were very good, including fresh milk. An excellent additional idea that we haven't met before was to put spare toilet paper, tea, coffee, etc in a discreet, but accessible, place on each landing, so that you could get it yourself, if you needed something late in the evening. There is a also a lounge built into the roof space, which extends from front to back of the hotel, so has great views in both directions.
The chef is very good, so we had our evening meal there several evenings. The sort of cooking was in a different class from what you might expect in a smallish hotel, delicious and imaginative.
Finally, but most importantly, the owner and all the staff couldn't have been more pleasant or helpful. They have created a hotel with a real sense of friendly warmth. It was clear that everyone was committed to this from the owner through to the duty staff who received us, the restaurant staff and the people who cleaned the bedrooms.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can strongly recommend Schooners as a place to stay..

Room Tip: Most rooms overlook the sea, but definitely ask for one.

Don't be put off by the approach to the hotel , it's position in the centre of St Mary's was excellent , quiet and with easy access to all amenities and to the quay for boat trips.First impression was of very helpful and cheery staff, who carried our luggage up to a lovely 1st floor room with view of beach, boats and harbour to die for! The building is quaint with steep stairs and narrow corridors, but we had been warned and my husband who has some problems with mobility managed fine with rails on both sides of the stairs. Bedroom was clean and spacious for a 2star hotel with reasonable storage and good shower. Breakfasts were very good, usual help-yourself juice and cereals and cooked breakfasts of sensible proportions and taylor-made if you asked. There is a very good system of ordering evening meals in the morning which must save on food wastage and the quality of food compared well with high class restaurants..The bar area on the ground floor and the sitting room in the eaves both gave amazing views. Our particular impression remains the efficient and friendly attitude of all the staff. We'd certainly choose this hotel again.

we liked the sound of the marketing for this hotel so we chose the schooners and booked on the phone, and told the person on the other end that as we had mobility problems we did not want a room above the first floor and ideally on the ground floor. As there are no ground floors " I will put you in the room at thet very head of the stairs" i was told, this was ok for us. We have been to St Mary's before and love the island, when we got to the Schooners and more to the point in the room, we were immediately disappointed with room 2, the one we were allocated which was not at the very head of the stairs as said, immediately we saw that there was no room to swing a cat, there is no room to walk around the bed without walking sideways, you cannot have two people in the room and walk past each other one has to shuffle somewhere to let the other pass, the storage is wholly inadequqte with a bulit in cupboard for a wardrobe that is no way suitable being less than a single size, ther is no where enogh storage room in the bathroom also. The room being to a single size with a kingsize bed has a silly square coffee table that takes up to much floor space and is totally wasted as a shelf for coffee and kettle etc, the under bed sheet was to small for the mattress whic was slightly smaller than the base which was in serious need of good clean, dust ( the remains of human skin etc) is not a good thing to see. the room was far too small in need of a clean and lacked even a basic ammount of storage, our room window overlooked the kitchen door and patio and we had the extractor fan just below the window, we had that and kitchen smells coming into the room especially with the window open. While our first night meal and breakfast was good, but the breakfast that was put before us although the quality was good the size and and butter , jam, marmalade etc, us left us feeling that they were trying to do things as cheap as possible. The only saving grace is the view out of the room window, because of what i have just noted down and the price of £70 per person per night is in my opinion totally unjustified being almost double the price of many other Hotels and B&B's

From the outside you could not guess how delightful this hotel is! The rooms with seaview do indeed have a stunning view over the harbour Our room was pleasantly decorated in a light and modern seaside/nautical theme, as was the ensuite and was immaculately clean. The narrow passageways and staircases add character and create a cosy feel. The new loft lounge is spectacular with views, library, Wifi and coffee. We stayed five days and ate in every evening. The food was excellent: wide choice of breakfast and the three course evening meals, chosen from a menu at breakfast time, were particularly good - cooked from fresh ingredients and beautifully presented on the plates to the standard you would expect from a really good restaurant! The meals were a real treat, and the bar with view over the harbour for pre-drinks and coffee after was a bonus. The small team of staff were friendly, efficient, and cheerful and nothing was too much trouble. This hotel is very conveniently located but in a peaceful back street. We felt we could not have chosen a better place to stay and was very good value.

Room Tip: The Superior Sea View rooms are worth it!

Couldn't have been closer to the sea. Very clean and tidy. Great views if you're in a sea view room. Food and service excellent. Would stay again.

We arrived in the main square of Hugh Town and were directed doown rather a dingy passageway to find a notvery imposing sign to schooners Hoytel and then down another passageway to the doorway to the Hotel. Through the door to anopther world. Up perhaps a fairly narrow and steep staircase to our room and then "What a View" The outlook was out over the harbour and could not have been bettered. The room was clean and tidy with very comfortable bed but could be a little difficult to get out of on one side due to the sloping ceiling. Tea and coffee making equipment was provided with fresh milk provided in mini fridges on each landing. There was a very adequate En Suite with excellent shower. Down stairs a friendly little bar area again looking out over the harbour. Into the very bright dinning room for an excellent full English breakfast with plenty of fruit, cerials and juices if required. The evening menu is placed on the table and can be ordered if required but during our 5 days we only eat in on 2 occasions as we wanted to explore other areas but the 2 meals we had were excellent.. This was our first visit to Scilly which is like stepping back 50 years in time but with nearly all the modern ammenities. I was a little worried before arriving on Scilly as the Official Guide book I had requested stated that there were no Taxis on Scilly but that is not the case and there is plenty of transport available if required bur with good weather walking is the best option as there is so much to see. We hope to visit Scilly again as it feels so safe and peaceful and we would certainly look first for accomadation at Schooners
