“Wonderful relaxing spoil in beautiful location”
Reviewed 30 August 2017 for a stay in August 2017

So very glad we have had 5 nights here to wind down- complete spoil - gorgeous location with constant sound of water and waves. So peaceful. Really beautiful staff, - feels like family - so kind, gentle, thoughtful. Sam picked us up at some ungodly hour at the airport - so full of care and integrity. Next time we will just ask him to plan our triparound sri lanka (touronwheels@yahoo.com) - Nilmini is the BEST cook - homemade authentic Sri Lankan food eg prawn curry, pancakes stuffed with cardamom/ginger/cinnamon - wonderful! And happy to teach you how to cook. Thankyou - Cannot wait to return.

“Return to Paradise”
Reviewed 31 January 2017 for a stay in January 2017

You always wonder if returning to a place where you had such a wonderful time previously, is really such a good idea. This is my third, and my husband's second stay at Talalla Bay Beach House and it didn't disappoint.

As we walked across the golden sand it was if the House was waiting for us, lying nestled up under the hillside and only steps from the ocean. We were greeted with a hug and kiss from 2nd – in -charge Nilmini and introduced to Jee the new manager.

Accommodation is basic but comfortable. A good sized, mosquito netted bed made up with white linen and a Barefoot blanket sits under a central fan. There is no need for air conditioning here – the sea breeze is more than sufficient to keep you cool. Shuttered windows allow the air to circulate and brings in the sound of the sea. Our end room has plenty of space for suitcases and there are bedside drawers and hooks for hanging clothes. The bathroom is more of a wet room with warm water of good pressure.

Outside you can stretch out on a chaise lounge or swing in a hammock while relaxing with a cup of tea which Jee and the staff are more than happy to provide. It's the personal service that sets this place apart.

Meals are a culinary delight and by far the best in the area. Breakfasts consist of tropical fruit plates, toast, eggs prepared how you like them (loved the spicy Sri Lanka omelette with dahl), buffalo curd and treacle, coconut stuffed pancakes and fresh grilled sardines all washed down with freshly brewed tea or coffee. We didn't eat lunch too often as we were generally too full from breakfast but on the odd occasion coconut roti with spicy sambal went down a treat.

Evening meals varied between a curry selection - tuna, prawns, stuffed cuttlefish and a variety of vegetables I've never seen before, plus whole grilled fish and salad. Jee and his team are amazing and they love to see people enjoy the food they have prepared.

The internet has been upgraded since our last visit and now works very well.

Sunrise is a great time to run/stroll along the beach and the local fisherman encourage you to help them pull in the morning catch. Just watch your hands as those ropes burn! Two totally different style yoga classes are held twice a day at the next door Talalla Retreat. A 1 ½ hour class costs $15US and they are very good. There is a well regarded Ayurvedic centre within walking distance and Jee is able to arrange a tuk tuk for various excursions. Venture out to Dikwella markets and buy something exotic for Jee to cook for your dinner! A sunset drink is a nice thing to do – we recommend the furthest boat restaurant for this.

We book directly with Emma and communication is always prompt with a smile. Always great to catch up with her when she drops into the Beach House.

Its with some sadness that I write this review. A car is due very soon to whisk us back to Colombo. Talalla Bay Beach House holds a special place in our hearts. We will be back next year!

“Homely Hide Away”
Reviewed 7 October 2016 for a stay in October 2014

I spent a week here on my own. I loved my room upstairs, complete with mozzie net and comfortable bed. I loved coming out onto the balcony in the morning and looking out over the sea. Ranga and the ladies are lovely hosts, who made me feel very welcome but also didn't intrude. Ranga would even bring me a snack when I was sitting up on the balcony reading for hours when the rain was torrential! He also took me along to the food market one morning which was a nice local experience.
It's location on the beach was amazing and importantly I felt safe as a solo female traveller.
The food was very good and plentiful and Ranga would ask everyday what I'd like for dinner!
I liked being able to go to the place next door too for a yoga class or to use the pool (for a fee).
My only issue (for me personally) was it's quite isolated so might be an idea to make plans for day trips, etc, just to get out and about. There are usually tuc tucs up the lane outside the place next door for smaller trips around the area.
It's a very peaceful place to be, so quiet at times that the monkey's felt safe enough to come down out of the tress and rob from the fruit bowl :)

Apologies for the monkeys. They are adorable but a little cheeky when it comes to fruit! :) We now keep the fruit bowl inside the Kitchen.

“Beautiful location,caring staff,stylish and relaxing”
Reviewed 11 July 2016 for a stay in July 2016

The beachhouse is unique in its position and feel. It is more of a private villa than a hotel. When we stayed there were more staff than guests. Emma the overseer is wonderful and makes sure you have everything you need and the staff bend over backwards to make sure you are looked after. The venue is chic and stylish, yet very simple so if you want plush and mod cons..not your place. Beach is superb but not a lot to do except relax. Good surf spots within a half hour.

“Paradise!”
Reviewed 10 March 2016 for a stay in February 2016

Where do I start in reviewing Talalla Bay Beach House? Firstly, what sets this place apart is the care and attention you receive from Manager/Chef Ranga and his staff. My husband and I, and a girlfriend spent a week at Talalla in early February.

Our bags were carried across the sandy beach to a white house nestled under the hillside, and only metres from the water. The Beach House has five rooms only so you feel as if you are staying in a friend’s home. We made friends with the other people staying here, enjoying numerous outings, my birthday celebration and communal meals together.

The rooms are very simple – a mosquito netted bed, side tables and a chair. The bathrooms on the ground floor are a little dark and dingy and could do with a freshening makeover. The Spa Ceylon Ginger Shower gel was a nice touch. Rooms are fan cooled and you will fall asleep with the sound of the waves in your ears.

Be sure to wake up early and run/walk along the length of Talalla Bay. Yoga devotees perform their Sun Salutations and local fisherman haul in their catch, only too happy for you to join in and give them a hand!

Breakfast is served at about 9am by the smiling staff and generally consists of fruit, toast, butter and jam, eggs, tea or coffee. Curd and treacle, pancakes and milk rice with sambal is sometimes on offer.

There are a number of lunch options available but the general consensus is to eat at the second of the two boat restaurants located along the beach. The vegetable curry and rice is far from the cheapest we’ve come across in Sri Lanka but it is fresh, shows great variety and the view doesn’t get any better!

Ranga is passionate about food and tempting smells emanate from the kitchen from mid morning onwards. Dinner is presented with a flourish and always enjoyed by all. We tended to linger over the communal table until late at night enjoying the companionship of new friends.

Ranga is only too happy to suggest local outings and can arrange transport.

The poor internet was the only real negative of the stay. It was so frustrating trying to send and receive even a simple email!

We enjoyed Talalla so much my husband and I booked another week towards the end of our month long stay in Sri Lanka. Unfortunately my mother-in-law became very ill and my husband flew out to be by her side. I continued on to Talalla – if you have to on you own in Sri Lanka this is the place to be! It felt like coming home – warm, safe and comforting!

A special mention and a big thank you must be made to Emma who promptly replied to my emails, arranged all our long distance transport and booked our accommodation at Hempel House in Galle (also a great place to stay!).

I thoroughly recommend you book a stay at Talalla Bay Beach House and guarantee you will walk away totally relaxed and ready to re-enter the real world!

“Paradise on the beach, falling asleep by the sound of the waves and amazing food!”
Reviewed 3 November 2015 for a stay in September 2015

This place is really like a little paradise. The house is literally on the ocean! There are steps from the garden directly down to the sea and from the cute lovely rooms you can hear the sound of the ocean all night long. Even if we stayed only 5 nights, we felt refreshed as if we spent a month! Honestly, we would've wanted to satay for a month:) You can walk on the beautiful quiet bay until the other edge (about half an hour) where you can climb on the rocks and have an amazing view from the top. It's not crowded like other beaches in Merissa and so on, but not totally deserted either. There's a nice little beach bar at 5 minutes walk on the beach, a small shop and 2 boat restaurants. And if you want some more luxury, you can go for a yoga session in the neighbouring Talalla retreat (nice yoga btw:) Not to forget the food and staff! Our cook Ranga is fantastic and every day we had an enormously tast healthy diner and beuatiful breekfast with fresh fruits in the morning by the lovely ladies present. They where so sweet and also arranged a tuc tuc for us. It feels like your staying with family. The house is surrounded by lush gardens and we even had monkeys visiting us:) Be ware that they don't steal your bananas! The bathroom is small but clean; the rooms comfortable and with mosquito net. To recommend for couples or individual travellers who're up for beautiful nature, authenticity and great food!

“Keep this a secret!”
Reviewed 29 September 2014 for a stay in September 2014

Everything from making several booking amendments to arranging several trips around the area was handled with patience and efficiency by Emma and Ranga. Our group came from Australia, Canada and South Africa and we felt more at home than I can explain! We had the most fabulous, relaxing, funfilled 10 days in this magical beachhouse. Ranga fed us with skill and passion and was delighted to show us some Sri Lankan cooking secrets. He made no end of transport arrangements for us always with a smile and enthusiasm. Damianti and Nilmini looked after our every need and their smiling faces were a delight. We definitely arrived as guests and left as friends, all of us were in tears saying our goodbyes. I hope this special place never changes, its rustic charm and isolation is its attraction. Being lulled to sleep by the waves on our front step and waking to birds and an early morning swim and Ranga's freshly brewed coffee will remembered for a long time to come.
