Raven´s volcano (in Spanish “Volcan del Cuervo”) is a small but attractive volcano easily accessible by a trail from the road. You can see the volcano because of its unique shape from the road – we came from San Bartolomé and the volcano is located approximately 10 km to the west from the city, just outside of the LZ-56 road between Hoya de la Pena (near Mancha Blanca) and Vega de Tegoyo.
If you have a GPS, then the approximate coordinates of the volcano are -13.692570; 28.991474 (WGS 84 - EPSG:4326 coordinate system).
The whole trip to the crater is very easy when you do not climb on the ridge - you just walk the trail to the volcano, then pass through a crack on the wall inside the crater. So in my opinion, the trip could be also suitable for people with children or for elderly people. We also met some people with baby-coach.
When you want to climb on the top and walk around the crater ridge, you have 2 ways – go inside the crater using the footpath from the road, then climb on the ridge, go around and use one of the footpaths on the outer crater slope to return to the road – same way we used. But you can also climb using the outer footpath and climb down to the crater using the inner one.
The whole trip including the walk around the ridge takes about 2-3 hours - without need to hurry and with enough time to take photos. We did not pass the whole walk around the crater because we did not like the character of one its part - hard stone, broken terrain. The footpath on the crater ridge is in the powdery volcanic material, surprisingly not as slippery as it looks. Although it is not necessary, we found very useful to have a trekking poles and also trekking shoes (entry-level is enough). But for the basic trip to the crater you do not need any special equipment.
