Cilla is a gem. We booked late and she anticipated our needs made all pick up arrangements and called to confirm. The rooms are beautifully decorated, equipped with most of your self catering needs, no microwave unfortunately. Daily maid service is a lovely touch. Bequia is a truly simple and quiet island. Breathtaking panoramic views, gorgeous! But that is it. If you're down for a relaxing, romantic island getaway, Bequia is the place. If you're looking for an epicurean or adventure type holiday it's not the place. People are warm and friendly, you feel safe and it's just authentic Caribbean! The inn is close to the road so depending on your room you may get some road noise but this is also an advantage location wise. Easy drop off and pick up access as the island terrain is Very hilly with steep slopes. Taxis are easily accessed, you get a free phone on loan for your stay. Location close to restaurants, dollar buses, town centre and port, very close to the ocean and close proximity to other beaches by car. So the location was Great and the proximity to the main road was an asset here especially if you have small kids who may not be able to do too much walking. Some other properties further from the road may require more walking and limited amenity access. Franklyn was awesome, he took us in an island tour and was a great local guide and taxi driver. The service was great, people warm, island absolutely gorgeous and Sugarapple Inn was perfect for us!

Just had a terrific, relaxing week in Bequia. We enjoyed our stay enormously thanks to the excellent help provided by Cilla, Franklin and the rest of the staff at Sugarapple Inn. In fact, everyone in Bequia is so friendly and helpful. We intended it being a working holiday, so we were insistent on having good Internet connectivity in the room. The Internet worked fine, but we didn't work at all because we so much enjoyed just relaxing. The Inn is well-planned and set in lovely grounds, with a refreshing pool to drop in after a day out. It's just short walk down to Friendship Bay and close to Port Elizabeth. Of course, nothing is far in Bequia anyway :-) We were really sad to leave and will return for another stress-free, relaxing holiday.

Room Tip: We had Unit #1, which we think had the best view. But I'm sure all the rooms are just as airy a...

The Sugar Apple was a great place to stay. There were no complaints about the hotel that my wife and I could find. The beds were comfortable, the unit had a/c, it even had a nice kitchen. The pool was well taken care of and was a short walk to the beach. If you stay here make sure to say hello to Nell the cat. She is a sweet young cat that is very friendly.

I first heard of Sugar Apple from a co-worker and decided to look the inn up on TA. Having been to Bequia before I already knew I wanted to stay on or near to Friendship beach. We were 2 Adults, 1 Teen, 1 Child and a ½ . I booked 2 adjoining rooms for 5 nights. Lionel and Cilla were professional, helpful and quick to reply to all my emails. I already liked the place and had not yet arrived.
We pre-arranged for Franklin, Cilla’s husband, to meet us at the ferry dock and drive us to the Inn only a short 8-10 minute drive away. He was, as promised, there waiting and assisted us with our bags. We were lucky, even though it was mid-day our rooms were ready and we could take our luggage to the rooms right away. We were assigned rooms 5 (yellow with 2 double beds) and 6 (orange with 1 king bed). These are the top two apartments of the lower building overlooking the pool and garden. The rooms were bright, airy and very comfortable however, right away we noticed room 5 had a few issues – 2 light bulbs had blown (1 at the door and 1 at the entrance hall to the room), the safe and the wireless internet were also not working. Cilla had been there to greet us and was still in the office so I popped up to sort out a rental car for 2 days and to tell her about these issues. We rented the Sugar Apple’s 4 door jeep for 2 days (very handy to have that service available on site) and once we were all unpacked decided to head to a supermarket in town (side note - Knights opposite the gas station & market had the most variety. We learned this after visiting 2 others.) On our return Cilla had already sorted room 5’s lights and the wireless and someone had been arranged to come fix the safe the following day. WOW! What service!
During our stay we swam in the pool twice, walked down to Friendship beach (only a short 4 minute walk) once and sampled a coconut from the garden.
One very important note that can not go without mention in this review is: On the Saturday evening after spending the entire day in St. Vincent I noticed we were just about out of milk and bread and would not have enough for breakfast the following day before heading out early to the Tobago Cays. Cilla had very kindly given us her cell number in case we needed anything and she wasn’t around. I called to ask where we might be able to pick up a few groceries at 8:00pm on a Saturday night. “Nowhere I thought. What bad planning on my part.” Cilla said she would make a quick call and get back to me. She did even better, at around 9:00pm we had a knock on our door and it was Cilla groceries in hand. She truly is a GEM.
A special thanks to Cilla and all at the Sugar Apple. We will be back.

We travelled to Bequia for a short stay after being in Barbados and was recommended teh Sugaraple Inn - we were not disappointed. Lovely clean apartment with everything you need for your stay. Much better equiped than the previous apartment we had rented in Barbados for twice the price!! One ofthe great things was the kitchen/diner area which had shutters that open out and let fresh air in and great views too. Bed was really comfotable and mosquito net a great idea. Location wise you may need a vehicle as not much near by but transport very easy to arrange. Beach a short walk but I preferred Lower Bay beach myself. Alll in all a great place and well kept and maintained and would return.

Room Tip: Room 6 is on the corner and has great views

My wife and I recently spent 8 days at the Sugar Apple Inn on Bequia. All things considered, we did have a great stay on Bequia, but we did have some difficulties at the Sugar Apple. Cilla, the manager of the Inn, was really wonderful and very knowledgeable about everything in the area, and when we saw her, she was incredibly helpful to us. Unfortunately however, she was sick most of the time we were there. As a result, several of the problems we experienced probably could have been avoided had she been well. Believing this is why we feel the Sugarapple deserves a better than average rating. But for us, with Cilla not able to be there most of the time, it made it extremely difficult to find anyone around to answer questions about room issues, places to go, where to eat, etc.

Side note about transportation on the island: Once we arrived at the airport, we were greeted outside by Franklin, a taxi driver on the island. He’ll tell you that he works for the Sugarapple Inn, but really he just knows Cilla well, so she sends business his way. Now you may think that you can save money by taking the dollar bus everywhere, and you’re probably right. We road it from time to time and it’s about 40 cents US per person to get anywhere it’s going. However, if you don’t know how to get where you’re going, you can waist a lot of time with the dollar bus. The Sugarapple Inn is about an hour walk from town and any decent restaurants, so most of the time, you will need regular transportation. Franklin will take you anywhere you ask him to and his prices are fair (while on the island, we took a couple other taxis too, and they all charged about the same after some haggling).

When we arrived at the Sugarapple Inn there was a young girl to check us in. She was very nice, but I got the impression that she had never done this before, and when she left, we didn’t see anyone who worked at the Inn for two days. She did ask if I wanted to check out a cell phone, and I wish that I had taken her up on it. But we had no idea how important it was to have one until we were stuck for two days without a way to get in touch with Cilla, Franklin or anyone else. Also, the only restaurant in Friendship Bay, where the Sugarapple Inn is located, is the Bagattel. Do not go there, or if you go there, just go for a drink. It does have a nice atmosphere but it’s the most expensive restaurant we went to on the island, the service is awful and the food is mediocre. Pretty much everywhere else we ate on the island was wonderful, but the Bagattel is really just awful.

The hot water heater is solar powered and works well when the sun is out, but on cloudy days or in the morning, be ready for a brisk shower. It really wasn’t a big deal and once we discovered this, we just showered in the evenings. We did unfortunately have a couple rainy days when the sun didn’t come out at all though. The wireless is very slow and only works about 60% of the time, so you should take advantage of it while it’s up. We rather liked this fact however as it kept us from spending time on the web while on vacation. The pool is nice and private, and there are two grills that guests can use for cook outs which we enjoyed. The beach is just a quick walk down the hill and there are two beach chairs and beach towels in every room that we got a lot of use out of. The Sugarapple Inn also has a resident cat named Nell. My wife and I loved her with all our hearts. She is a wonderful cat and was really the highlight of our entire stay. We really miss her now that we are back home.

When we finally saw Cilla, we immediately checked out a cell phone. It is quite cheap and is a must have mostly so that you can get in touch with Franklin to take you places (we did a lot of walking and riding the dollar bus those first couple days). That day, we were also told that we had accidentally been given the wrong room (one that Cilla had promised another guest), so we had to move. She was very nice and apologetic about it, and we certainly were willing to oblige, especially since Cilla was so sick, but it was a nuisance to have to pack everything back up once we had just unpacked and settled in two days prior.

The next day, we wanted to go on the Friendship Rose tour, but we also wanted to go buy groceries. Cilla told us that if we made a list, Franklin would go to the grocery store for us and put our groceries in our new room for us. We took them up on this, and it was really a great convenience; not the kind of service that you would expect to see in a regular hotel, that’s for sure. Franklin didn’t even ask to be paid for this service (though we paid him for it anyway).

The new room however had several problems. The light in the kitchen was burned out and though there is a flashlight in every room, the batteries were dead in the one in our new room. Therefore, that first night we had to cook in the dark (now that was interesting). Also we bought cans of vegetables, but the can opener was broken, forcing us to pry the cans open with a knife. Another nuisance, but we made do just fine. The next morning however we noticed the worst problem of our whole trip. Our kitchen was swarming with fire ants (the ones that really hurt when they bite you). We spent hours trying to kill as many of them as possible (this became a daily routine I’m sad to say). Once Cilla finally arrived that day, we told her about the problems and she immediately had someone change the light bulb in the kitchen and the batteries in the flashlight, but unfortunately the can opener was never replaced. Though she told us she would have someone come spray for the ants, there were more and more ants every day and we ended up having to throw out most of our groceries. Most of the issues we had really weren’t that big a deal, but the ant situation really was frustrating.

As the week progressed and Cilla started being more available, things kept getting better and better. She suggested some fantastic restaurants for us to go to. One in particular we really liked was the Devil’s Table. We also took a trip to St. Vincent for the day, and Cilla arranged for us to be given a tour by Sailor’s Wilderness Tours. Our tour guide Desman was wonderful, and finding him was all thanks to Cilla.

As long as Cilla’s available, most everything runs very smoothly, but it is clear that the success or failure of the Sugarapple Inn really rests on her shoulders. All in all, we had more good experiences than bad ones. Chances are Cilla will be there and available most of the time and as long as she can get a handle on the ant problem, I would definitely recommend staying there.

Room Tip: The rooms upstairs have a better view.

We greatly appreciate your comments about your stay at the Sugarapple, although we are greatly disappointed that there were some "downs." Indeed Cilla is the soul of the Sugarapple, and your experience has highlighted not only that, but also the need to ensure that her support system works seamlessly at all times.

Kind regards,

Sugarapple
