I spent 2 weeks at Le Chêne Plat while working on a story about Champagne. Renaud Pate, the proprietor, is a Master Sommelier with an amazing knowledge about the region, the wine and its producers. He's not the least bit stuffy, and is incredibly generous in sharing his knowledge and resources. I spent hours talking with him about how Champagne is made, how to taste it and his favorite producers. He speaks excellent English and also has a great sense of humor.
The rooms are neat, clean and pleasantly decorated - though not fancy. The location is excellent, at the edge of the small town of Cumieres. Just 1 km up the hill (a beautiful walk through the vineyards) is Hautvillers, my favorite town in Champagne, where Dom Perignon is said to have perfected the production of bubbly.
Renaud serves a very generous breakfast, with cheeses, bread, croissants and homemade jams. There's also a pleasant porch with tables where you could relax with a bottle of Champagne and snacks.
Whatever you do, ask Renaud for his suggestions!
