The best meal in Muscat December 2010
Having just returned from a holiday in Muscat and benefitting from reviews on 'Trip Advisor' (using my Iphone), I feel compelled to write about a restaurant I discovered on the sea front at Muttrah, just a few minutes walk from the famous Muttrah Souq.
Kurkum is a new restaurant on the corniche overlooking the harbour with its enormous motor yachts (apparently the largest being the Royal Yacht).
The restaurant - a small and immaculately conceived space, with white linen, delicate crockery, comfortable banquettes and the most welcoming manager.
The food is a fusion between Indian and Omanian cuisine presented in a modern and elegant fashion, and was some of the best food I have tasted, let alone in Oman. The desserts were exceptional, warm carrot and coconut dessert, lemon cheese cake and date ice cream were amongst the best.
Interestingly, we did eat at many of the other restaurants mentioned on Trip Advisor, and generally they were fine, but nothing that encouraged me to review.
But Kurkum was exceptional, and I believe can compare with some of the best restaurants that I have had the pleasure to eat in.
I do try to eat indigenously and prefer to stay away from formulaic Hotel dining, but with that in mind Kurkum balanced my desire for the authentic. Within a modern and elegant interior, a beautiful view of the working harbour, fine food and traditional Omanian hospitality.
No traveler to Muscat should miss this experience. A late lunch after shopping in the souk or visiting the fish market, or possibly a late evening soiree with friends. White linen, good service, excellent food and a fabulous loo and what's more it is no more expensive than a simple lunch on a beach cafe. Approx 15 OR's / person.
I hope that this short review might encourage some other travelers to visit, and I would appreciate feedback.
