“Showing Its Age”
Reviewed 15 October 2009

This hotel is conveniently located in the Diplomatic Quarter. The hotel, its rooms, its pool and surrounding grounds, and its spa are all showing their age. That being said, I had a lovely stay at the hotel largely because of its ideal location (on the water) and variety of restaurants/bars. I ordered room service nearly every night for an entire week, and although pricey, I was never once disappointed with my meals.

This gives you the basics you would expect from an Intercon, but it is an odd looking hotel, nicer on the inside than the outside. Nice gardens, but the rooms are small and it is very expensive for what it is. I am sure there must be better value hotels in the area for the money. The Trader Vics restauarant is nice, with great food, but is over-chilled with aircon freezing the place!

The Inter-Continental is a World Class hotel with one of the best locations for exploring Muscat and Oman. The service from the team is very professional with very fast room service and friendly Omani hospitality throughout. Lush green gardens, pools and beach to laze by and tennis courts and a good sized gym for activites. Although Ramandan saw some of the outlets closed during the day in the evening there is still a wide variety of options including Trader Vics. The surrounding area "Oasis by the sea" also has a nice vibe and a plethora of coffee shops, cafes and crepery. Would recommend this hotel to stressed out UAE execs looking to unwind for a long weekend.

A very warm welcome awaited our small business group, and that included food despite it being Ramadan. The staff were very helpful, kind and courteous. My room (315) was large and comfortable.

However, the whole place really is in need of an overhaul. Whilst the main areas look great, the pool areas and the rooms are in need of some attention. It's all starting to look a bit tatty. And more attention to detail is needed in the rooms. In mine:
- there was no shampoo (but two bottles of conditioner - other colleagues had the same problem)
- the tissues had run out
- the plughole of the bath was full of hair
- the remote control for the TV needed some card stuffed in the battery slot to get it to work
- the TV was actually unwatchable because it whined the whole time

So there is room for improvement.

The Hotel has a very ethnic ambience and staff very courteous and eager to help. One instantly feels welcome.

Rooms offer world-class facilities and attention has been paid to details.

The Breakfast spread at the main Restaurant is fabulous. The club Room upstairs offers a wide variety of snacks and Internet Terminals etc - plus a great view !

The coffee shop on the lower level and the bar on the ground level were memorable.

The bar provided good entertainment almost all nights with live western bands in attendance. The crowd was participative too, inspite of all not all being hotel residents.

Relaxed pool view and courteous staff in attendance. Room Service was never a problem.

The intercontinental is a high class hotel chain, which had the first 5* hotel in Muscat. Unfortunately the hotel management now missed to organise a complete make over.

The exterior view of the hotel looks like a big bunker, as the entrance hall is very impressive. The worst point actually is the pool area. The fittings and surroundings have not been renewed for years and the water gets quickly dirty because of too much trees. It looks like a 70´ies revival. There is a bath attendent, but it seems he is more forcing on european ladies then looking after small children.

Tipp: the trader vic´s restaurant is very good. except the band, which is far too loud!
