This deservedly is one of the top three hotels in Muscat. It is a beautiful location and beautiful staff. As an example, when you arrive you normally expect to queue at reception. Not here, they invite you to the lobby area where you sit down, get a cocktail and the receptionist comes to you. You are then lead to your room, not a bad idea because it is a complex place, and are given an invitation to your room. What a start.
We arrived at 10 AM, the early London flight arriving, our room was available and also they allowed us to go into breakfast. It was clear that we were newcomers to breakfast and a waiter gave us a full guided tour, rather essential as it is a huge and brilliant buffet breakfast. The next day when we arrive for breakfast we were greeted by the receptionist by our names. Classy.
The buildings are a delight. All low level, set in fantastic grounds with the most astonishing pools you will ever see. We opted for the beach for sunbathing, there will always beds available there as they were throughout the entire resort. The seabreeze certainly protected us from the high temperatures, even in April.
When you arrive at the beach, the beautiful bays with mattresses also have two huge towels already on them. You'll be lucky to unroll the towels before one of the very helpful staff arrive. A very nice touch is that as soon as you arrive you get a tray with two glasses with iced water. Even nicer is that the water is topped up almost every 30 minutes, and you get fruit on skewers and other interesting drinks served throughout the day.
So what are these reservations? Well the location of the hotel is on a beach, not the most brilliant beaches to be honest because there are a lot of stones, but to get to anywhere else is difficult. You can't walk down the beach to see anything for instance. Also if you want to go somewhere else to eat, there is nowhere that you can walk locally, the hotel is down a private half mile road up to the main road which is simply a dual carriageway with nothing of interest in walking distance.
You are therefore rather stark with the hotel restaurants. Firstly they are very expensive, but the food is also good. Paying £150 for 2 to eat with a bottle of wine each night did however give us a bit of indigestion. There was a seafood restaurant which we didn't try as we don't like that, and a barbecue restaurant which was even more expensive. So to be honest for the 10 day holiday we had, we have started to get a bit fed up of not being out to enjoy other locations food. You couldn't exactly take a taxi and ask "take me to a restaurant".
So to give an overview, it is a glorious restaurant in fantastic grounds with brilliant service which bordered on being sycophantic. It is on the other hand very expensive, but there again everything is Oman is. We went early April, and the weather was already getting up to 35°C, and on the last day we were there it's was 45°C, really too hot to breathe. Choose your timing of your holiday carefully.
