Impressive friendly and helpful. Attractive modern architecture with style. Well situated by the beach on the outskirts of Muscat the capital of the Oman. Excellent service.
Muscat is delightful and the countryside with traditional villages fascinating. Appealing Omani courtesy.
perfect temperature in Northern winter.

The Chedi is a first class five star hotel - the ideal place to relax and enjoy some winter sun. Staff (from check-in to poolside) are excellent, design and atmosphere perfect.

Grounds and interior of the hotel are kept immaculately. Food is delicious - but not cheap. You get what you pay for.

We got an upgrade to a Chedi Suite with sea view - having stayed at many great hotels in Asia I can say this is the best room yet. Wonderful layout, a complementary mini-bar including alcohol and a bathroom to die for. We're saving up for the next visit already!

On the downside yes you do see a few planes (this is the capital of Oman - not the Maldives) and yes I've seen better beaches too. However the Chedi is all about relaxing and it delivers on that promise without exception. Do come and enjoy it!

What a wonderful hotel in a wonderful country.
The airplane noise is intrusive once an hour or so but still the hotel grounds and food meant we would return again and again.

There is no doubt about it. The place as such is an architectonical masterpiece. Simple elegance at its best.

Unfortunately, the beach, the sea and the immediate surroundings are not that great but we knew that in advance, so no complaints. The nearby desalination plant is definitely not a pretty sight but you only see it when you walk to the sea.

We stayed in a chedi deluxe room which has a good size, a clean simple design, a wonderful shower but there is a serious lack of storage space which was slightly annoying. I would not exactly say that the room was luxurious also because the bed cover and sheets were very basic. No Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton quality here.

We had all our meals in the hotel during our 10 nights stay and the quality of the food is really good and there are enough options, so we didn't get bored. We generally don't like buffets but here they were really excellent. The presentations were constantly kept appetizing. The truly enjoyed the buffets in the Arabian Court and by the pool on Jazz nights. The food is not cheap but no more expensive than similar places elsewhere in the world.

They were still working on the new beach restaurant and it looked like it could take a while before it opens.

The place was completely full during our stay and we never had any problem finding a sun bed even when showing up at 11am. The beach service could easily be improved a lot. There are plenty of beach/pool attendants and they are all very nice but most of the time they are just on "stand-by". The average daily treat was two glasses of water and a cold towel. This service is far inferior to service we experienced at Four Seasons Sharm El Sheikh where there were constant offerings of water, fruit, smoothies, cold towels, sun glass cleaning etc.

The Chedi should really do the same. The beach/pool attendants are there but they are not used enough.

The gym was surprisingly well-equipped and had a great location on the beach.

The planes are there but they didn't disturb us at all. In fact, they were quite entertaining to watch. Their presence depends very much on the wind direction.

We visited the Al-Husn hotel which is impressive but there was definitely a lack of charm and soul and we were happy to return to the Chedi.

Overall a very enjoyable stay but there is room for improvement. I have to say the Four Seasons Sharm El Sheikh is much better value for money.

Having read some of the postings I was a bit apprehensive about actually staying at the Chedi but we still had to as we had booked it months in advance.

Firstly, the beach is not wonderful. However, it is a perfectly great beach to walk on and collect shells or to swim in the sea. The Chedi does not boast Caribbean sand, but what is has is more than adequate. Previous postings mention the chemical works, but you have to go out of your way to see these and it is extremely churlish to say that they could affect your break as you will not see these unless you look for them.

True there are a number of flights that go directly over the hotel each day, but this is neither bothersome nor intrusive.

Secondly, the staff were without exception wonderful throughout our whole stay. I can only commend their attitude as it was first class throughout.

Thirdly, the pools are amazing and the adults only pool is correctly policed, so there are no children. Some German tourists conform to stereotype and do save sunloungers at 8am, whilst they then return to have breakfast, however there was always either a sofa or bed to lie on when we wanted to.

Otherwise, it is a wonderful hotel, in wonderful grounds which are manicured to perfection. The tennis court is in great condition, there is a good gym.

The food is wonderful. Breakfast is amazing with massive variety. There are four kitchens to choose from for evening meal and a wonderful wine list as well.

If you want winter sun, the chedi is a must. If you want an amazing beach look elsewhere.

I would recommend the day trip into Muscat, but if you do wish to go to Nizwa, hire your own car. Beware, there is not much to do in Nizwa when you finally arrive there.

As with others we were concerned by less than complimentary reviews on this site.

My family and I vary in age from 60+ to 4 months. We stayed six nights.

We found the Chedi fantastic, with delicious and varied food, excellent service and quite simply the most stunning design and facilities. One of the most relaxing hotels we have ever stayed at.

Comments on a few of the regular grumbles:

1. The staff - we found all the staff, without exception, excellent. They were always efficient polite and attentive. Sure they do not forn to your every whim as you might find in some chain resort hotels - but then lots of people prefer unobtrusive efficiency.

2. The location - if one was to pick a location along the Muscat coast, the Chedi's would probably not be it - if you want stunning coast and beaches with diving, then head for the Al Bustan or Shangri La. However, that rather misses our intepretation of the ethos of The Chedi - ie total relaxation. It is quite possible to go diving or snorkelling - it just involves a road journey. But really the highlight of the Chedi was lazing by the pool, relaxing in our room etc. Totally chilled.

3. Aircraft - yes there are planes overhead and they are noisy and low. But only really at certain times of the day. We did not find them overly obtrusive at all.

Also, I was concerned how the hotel might cope with our 4 month old -but he was catered for fantastically well.

Our passing thoughts are that we would definitely go back - and are planning it already. A truly great hotel.
