We visited the Blue Marlin and were dismayed to find it had been modernised and renamed ‘Marlins’ (we presume one marlin alone wasn’t satisfactory). This place was once a jewel in the crown of Muscat. British colonial style, proper table linens, runners, cloth napkins, fitted covers, full silver service etc. There used to be a grand piano raised on a stage, and the managers daughter would sing sometimes, and very occasionally there would be a violinist joining. It seems the new owners have abandoned the classic décor and converted the space into something resembling an IKEA showroom. Completely ghastly. Our favourite food has also gone. We took coffees, and then left sharpish.

My family friends and I visited yesterday as we heard it had re-opened.

Previously we had spent several enjoyable afternoons there, quite good food reasonable prices and a nice ambience outside.

On arrival we found out that outside was under construction and not available, so no choice but to sit inside where the restaurant has been remodelled to resemble an office canteen.

We ordered fish and chips and carbonara respectively. The fish and chips were burnt to a cinder, see photos. The carbonara was not the creamy dish my friend had expected - see photo.

When we complained we were told that the food was actually good and we were wrong! The carbonara was actually “classic carbonara” which it didnt say on the menu.

None of us could finish our food it was horrific.

We found out that the place is now called “Marlins” not “Blue Marlins”, under new management.

One of their masterstrokes is to remove all the speciality fish dishes from the menu, despite being a speciality fish restaurant, now you only get bog standard pub food.

They have also massively hiked the prices. A pint of heineken was 2.8 OMR before the closure now its 3.8.

Its almost worth going just to see how bad it is.

Despite our voicing concerns very politely there was no attempt whatsoever to make us happy with the bill. We were just told by management that they were happy with the quality of what they provided.

I will give it 3 months before it folds.

Its so bad its almost like the management have a self destruct agenda.

Dear Ian

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your experience at Marlins. Your comments will be taken on board and shared with the team to see how we can move forward.

We are very much aware of the past positive reputation of the restaurant and are looking to build upon this. However the decoration needed refreshing as well as a review of the whole operation. Right now the restaurant is very much in a soft opening phase as you will have seen. Internally we have a lot more work to come in next 10 days that we hope will help to make the place feel a little more comfortable. The works outside are due to finish shortly and we look forward to having this addition to the facility.

In terms of food and the menu - it too is under constant review and we are adding items to the menu as we feel ready. The fish and chips we have been receiving good feedback on especially the home made chips, however I will take your comments to the team.

I am sorry your experience wasn't up to your expectations and we do hope that you are able to give us a second chance at some point in the future.

Thank you.

We visited the Blue Marlin, and it is now called 'Marlins'. Friends tell us the Marina is now run by Oman Sail, and the Blue Marlin is run by Laval Restaurant (from Ghala Valley). This is all very confusing - Laval closed down due to lack of business (overpriced, located out of town, and bad service from their Google reviews). Why would the Marina / Omansail replace the Blue Marlin formula with one thats already failed at another location? Blue Marlin managers have gone, and so has the chef it seems. They have made some effort to update the furniture, which was due for a refresh, but it is now very sparse and modern looking. The food seems to have gone with the Laval formula - tiny portions. If you dig into the menu you can still find some Marina favourites like the English Breakfast we had - though it was minus mushrooms, and smaller portion than before. Notsure how the over menu item have been affected. Food delivered to the table next to us seemed to be presentable, but small portions.

Dear Mutaba

Thankyou for taking the time to make feedback on your experience at Marlins restaurant. As I am sure you saw from your trip you will see that we are in a soft opening phase with only 30-40% of the restaurant functional. As time passes we are moving towards full capacity and hope to be fully functional by mid October. The menu will take a little longer to fine tune so your feedback is critical for us.

As you noted the Marina is now "managed" by Oman Sail. We knew that the Blue Marlin had a strong and loyal following but felt that there was the opportunity to make various improvements on what is a great location/site. The place needed freshened up and the whole business reviewed front of house and back.

You observation of Laval is incorrect and you may need to investigate further their situation prior to stating their failure. We haven't brought Laval in to run the restaurant as you will see the bulk of the team is still the old staff supplemented by some of their staff and management. The restaurant is still the Marinas, not sublet to another party! I hope this clears up your confusion.

With regard to portion sizes we are constantly monitoring (as I mentioned earlier we are in soft opening phase and this is being closely monitored). The English breakfast is still there and 2RO less than previous offering - mushrooms we will add.

Again I would like to thankyou for taking the time to review.

We visited the restaurant a few days ago and found that it has been given a major face lift.
The food was great - several Mediterranean dishes have been added. They have an Italian chef at present and his modern pasta interpretations are just fantastic. I had Pasta Puttanesca. Really excellent. My friend went for one of the old favourites - Fish and Chips. That dish alone with the freshest fish straight from the local market makes a visit worthwhile. And their chips are to die for - home made, not from a packet!
We will return and see what they are doing with the terrace. That was the only downside at our visit. They were still working on the outside bar and pool area.

Dear Jutta822

Thankyou for taking the time to comment on your recent experience at Marlins restaurant. We are glad that you have enjoyed some of the dishes here and your feedback will be passed on to the team.

As noted we are still in a soft opening phase with only 30-40% of the facility open and we are working hard to bring a "fresher" experience to the outside terrace and pool. We hope to have this work finished towards the end of the month (September) and would like to think that by mid late October we will be 100% open.

One of our goals in the process to look at our menu in a critical manner whilst trying to bring fresh produce to the floor. With the local fish market less than 10 minutes drive away the seamed like the first and most obvious improvement we could make.

We look forward to hosting you some time in the future.

Thankyou
