We stayed at the Al Bustan for 10 days up to Easter this year (2 adults, 2 children aged 9 and 6).
1. Rooms We booked two interconnecting Lagoon rooms, which worked well for the four of us. These are not the new modern rooms - all of those were booked up - but rather redecorated traditional rooms, which were perfectly good. Solid 4.5-5 star vs 5 star plus perhaps. Amenities in them were good - apart from slightly variable hot water temperature at times - and the servicing was timely and efficient. I wasn't quite sure what a Lagoon Room was when we booked. These rooms are great - they overlook the Lagoon pools, which are a pair of huge, wonderful "spa-like" pools. If you have a ground floor one, you can literally open a gate and flop into the water.

2. Gardens, Pools and Activities : The gardens were excellent, and there were lots and lots of sunloungers, hammocks, and cabanas. Plenty of space, and very attentive guys with towels, coolers etc. The hotel gardens also have a complex of outstandingly designed attractive, huge (50m?) and safe pools (in addition to the Lagoons). And the gardens front the beach. We made good use of a children's playground, the tennis courts and fitness centre and the watersports generally. The kids used the kids club, which was for a couple of hours morning and afternoon, and had a great time. Lots of outdoor stuff, plus some painting and crafts etc, but still lots of time with us. The hotel grounds are very safe, and we felt comfortable with the kids roaming the gardens, playing football with new friends and so on. The beach is "OK" - it was a little grubby (plastic bags, rubbish) at times, but there was a good combination of sandy stuff and little rock pools that we enjoyed. A rather ugly rubbish dump at the far end of the beach is worth staying away from. Generally we found that there was enough space that even though there were quite a few children around by the end of the week, there was still lots of space for adults. We felt that the hotel was very child-friendly without being child dominated. I'm not saying I would have gone there for my honeymoon, but it certainly catered both to couples, and to families. However, if you want racy nightlife, this is not your resort.

3. Spa - be warned, there is none. They have not broken ground on the promised Six Senses Spa at this point. There is a massage room, and a basic hair salon that does manicures and pedicures and the odd facial. But if you want a spa chill out - this is not yet the resort for you.

4. Food - fantastic buffet menus, changing every night and exceptional breakfasts in the main restaurant. Lovely outside seating area makes it a great experience. The chinese restaurant had great food, but is a bit soulless and the beach restaurant was fine too, but we (and the kids) loved the buffet. Service was very good - we have holidayed plenty in the 7* resorts of Dubai, and this was just as effective. They made a big fuss for the kids. BUT - this is NOT cheap. In 10 days, we spent £2000 on food - and we don't drink!

5. Other - Oman was delightful. We thoroughly enjoyed a trip to the Souk on the hotel shuttle bus, and we had a fantastic dolphin watching trip, with just us and a 3 others on a small boat where the sea was literally seething with dolphins. It was an extremely restful break and the hotel did a very good job.

6. One niggle. We took our laptop to hook up to the internet but were scandalised by the price - £120 for a week. I just thought that was criminal and used my blackberry instead. That was the only thing that really left a bad taste.
