Reviewed 25 February 2014

This is a very pleasant homely hotel, with extremely helpful staff, good views of corniche and harbour. Good situation in a very nice, convenient part of Muscat near Muttrah souq and great walking possibilities.

Room Tip: 401 is double aspect at top with views of fish market and harbour. Brilliant fish restaurant in side...

I ate in the restaurant last year and it was fantastic. From the outside the hotel looks lackluster to say the least, but on a recommendation from a friend I took my parents there while they were visiting. The restaurant is on the top floor and boasts a stupendous view of the Muttrah Corniche. The hotel is situated near the fish market, and you can really tell the seafood is fresh. I had the kingfish, simply grilled, with vegetables. Really tasty!

Travelling with a friend, I spent ten days as a tourist in Muscat in February and moved from a hotel in the dull Ruwi neighbourhood to the more lively quarters by the harbour in Muttrah. This area is full of life, with the fish market and the big souq both located directly on the corniche, the harbour promenade, which is also where local people take a stroll in the evening, so it is a good place to get in contact with Omanis and others. The Marina Hotel, like the other four or five hotels on the corniche, is very middle of the road as far as style and standard goes. The lobby is basically just a table with a couple of sofas; this is the only place in the hotel with internet. Although the hotel is quite small (twenty rooms) it has no less than two nightclubs; both with loud music, bellydancers and a fully licensed bar – a rarity in this generally no-alcohol country. Apparently club guests sleep it out in the lower rooms and only the two upper floors are used for regular guests. I stayed in room 401 which is probably the best in the hotel, with two tiny balconies (one full of aircon machinery) overlooking the harbour and the promenade. The bathroom was leaking and the shower needed fixing, which I had to point out twice; all in all the service at the front desk varied a lot. I did not see any cockroaches, unlike some other reviewers here. The room had only one electric outlet, which is unpractical when you need to charge your laptop, cellphone and camera at the same time. The top floor has a restaurant, the terrace has nice views but needs a sunscreen. We only had breakfast there; look for the small, separate balcony which has shade in the morning. The waiter, who is from Nepal, was very nice and attentive. There is a good French-style restaurant next door to the hotel; otherwise the eating places in the area are very simple. There was quite a lot of noise in the night, both from the two nightclubs but also from the outside, including the occasional drunken club guest and the unavoidable prayer calls. Still, the place has its charm and it gives good opportunities to get in contact with local people, as nightclub visitors keep shuffling in and out of the lobby and the entrance area. In spite of being probably the “seedy area” of Muscat, we never felt unsafe and we never had any unpleasant experiences in the hotel or the neighbourhood. All in all this hotel is a world apart from the more upmarket resort hotels situated along the beaches in more modern parts of the capital. For a taste of local life, it can certainly be recommended. I will stay here again on my next visit to Oman.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms 401 (best) or 402 which are on the top floor and away from the noisy nightclubs downst...

I was surprised to see so many bad reviews of this hotel, bearing in mind this is a budget option. Muscat is an expensive city to stay in, and for the equivalent of around GBP 40 per night including breakfast I thought this was a good value and fun place to stay.

Possibly the rooms have been recently refurbished as my room was small but clean with what looked like a newly fitted bathroom. The location was perfect for exploring the sights of Mutrah (unlike nearly every other hotel in the city) and the top floor restaurant had fantastic views both in the morning and evening. The food was nothing special but perfectly adequate and, once again, I would say good value.

The only downside I could see was that there is a small nightclub in the basement that goes on until 3 am. But I had a room on the 4th floor and slept fine. I would even say it added to the character of the place.

As a "travellers" hotel I would certainly recommend - lots of atmosphere sipping a cold beer on the roof terrace in the evening overlooking the corniche.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor - away from the noise of the nightclub downstairs!

This was the worst seafood I have ever been served grilled seafood turned out to be plate of prawns in sauce followed by a plate of tuna and swordfish accompanied by a plate of chips would definitely not recommend this restaurant wouldn't call it a restaurant for what we had it was expensive. Do not go there.

I am sorry to read about the negative reviews of the accommodation facilities offered by the Marina Hotel. In all the declamatory fuss, it should not be forgotten that the Marina offers a dining experience which is one of the expatriate locals' best kept secrets. The balcony off the (licensed) restaurant on the top floor (7th, I think), where tables are also placed, provides a rapturous panorama of the Muttrah corniche. Unlike the world's "location" restaurants, where the quality of the food is generally regarded as being in inverse proportion to the quality of the view, the various fish dishes are most acceptable. The pleasant and gentle Nepalese waiter, Madhav, is also highly attentive. I give my 4 stars for the restaurant only.

This hotel has only one thing going for it, the location.

- Our room didn't get cleaned, and was out of toiletpaper
- The restaurant was closed at breakfast time, we had to request them to open it
- The breakfast is low value (toast, juice, coffee/tea)
- There is noise (loud music, somewhere nearby) till 3AM
- No baby cot available though they said it was 'no problem' when booking by phone
- A light flickered and the plug of the TV created sparks
- The staff is poorly trained and not helpful
