“A castle fit for a queen!”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

My husband(king) & our friends(court) enjoyed a fabulous time at Castello di Strasssoldo. Our "court" could only stay one week, but my king & I enjoyed ourselves for two weeks at the end of May - first of June, 2014. Gabriella, Nidia, the entire staff were all very nice. It is self-catering so we were on our own, but they were there to help, if necessary. The views from our lovely porch were wonderful, the castle grounds fabulous. I found this to be one of the best equipped rental homes we have rented. Parking is very handy, also. Plenty of hangers, bathroom storage space, and one of the best equipped kitchens (not that we cooked much!). There is a dishwasher & clothes washing machine. We were able to dry clothes on the rack. We even hung them outside on a tree limb while we sat and read our books. Very relaxing! There are many beautiful towns, interesting museums, churches in the area. You will find maps & information on a table in the living area. I recommend Udine & Aquileia. The Rainbow restaurant around the corner was great. The weather was wonderful - like San Diego weather! We would highly recommend the Castle & the Friuli Venezia Giulia area. La Subida is worth a trip for Sat. or Sun. lunch, if you do not like to drive the roads at night.

Room Tip: All rooms great. Second bedroom not as much storage space. Two ensuite bathrooms. There is no swi...

This old castle evokes romantic charm. The interiors as well as the surrounding grounds will provide a relaxing feeling that will take away any stressful moments in your travels. The location and its history make the experience memorable to be shared with others. The hospitality is friendly and prompt.Nidia, our maid could not speak english but met our needs and expectations with outmost care. The pair of Newfie dogs complete the scene in the lush park behind the castle. Also, breakfast will be another pleasure in the shade of great elm trees or inside an acient rice mill powered by a working waterwheel. The coblestone streets, the archways to this early- medioeval town is the stuff for painters and photographers look for.

Room Tip: It is a place of romance. Book as early as possible. The suite in the tower is much recommended for...

If you are reading this and trying to make a descision- say YES - this is the most beautiful, serene, steeped in history, lovingly restored castello...... the family history is wonderful and then you meet Gabriella who has worked so hard to restore her family's castello in every detail. The furnishings, colours, outdoor seating, gardens. You can explore so much from here and you are in a haven away from the hub of the world. There was one day we couldn't bear to leave and just stayed outside all day in the garden....... Stay here, stay as long as you can, the warmth of the castello will be in your heart forevere.
My husband and I celebrated our 20year wedding anniverssary, and we will be back soon.
Thank you Gabriella for the vision that you have.

Room Tip: alll of the accommodations are perfect and have an outdoor section that opens in the large garden

This place is charming, beautiful and absolutely peaceful. When we first arrived, we weren't sure where to check in as there isn't an office. We called the reservations line and they gave us the owner's phone number to call. Gabriella was so welcoming. She and her sweet assistance (who reminds me of my grandmothers), quickly brought out champagne and she sat outside in the garden area with us. She told us about how the castle has been in her family for over 1000 years. Her assistant, who didn't speak a lick of english, was so happy to have us there and she showed it. We were fortunate the few days we were there, no one else was in our building.

They have a beautiful large living area on th first floor with a kitchen, separate refrigerator for guests, and apertivs for after dinner. She has the breakfast area set up in there. In the morning, they provided a lovely breakfast of cheese, meats, fresh brioche filled with apricot jam, coffee, tea, cereal and she made us eggs every morning. She set up the table with a candle and fresh flowers, china, and made it very romantic.

The rooms are extremely large and the amenitites are top notch. She just spent several years renovating the place and it shows. She did a great job with the renovations. Modern showers, sinks, regular sized blow dryers (little things that matter :-) )

The only thing different I would like to see is we could only access WiFi from the living area and not our rooms. I know, you are supposed to go to a beautiful castle in Italy to get away from things that keep you connected :-)

This is a good base to discover other charming cities like Cormons, Palmanova, Trieste, etc.

We spent a week at a conference in this ancient walled settlement with its own little river running through the grounds and also one night in the Tower suite on the first floor, that is spectacular. The castle, mill and extensive gardens have been lovingly restored and are maintained to a very high standard. The breakfasts, receptions and meals were prepared with great care from fresh local produce of the highest quality, and the hosts, Lella and Paul, are delightful people with an innate sense of hospitality. This castle is so ancient that the plans for the nearby Renaissance town of Palmanova, with a hexagonal square, were drawn up here. Other trips in the vicinity include the seaside town of Grado with its canals and boats, Aquileia with its ancient church, and the Miramare castle near Trieste. This is a place of great charm, with ivy-clad walls, steeped in history, bounded by trout streams, and restored to perfection.

We stayed for 2 weeks in the renovated house in the estate grounds called La Vicinia and couldn't have been more delighted with everything. The photos on the websites, and the reviews, are a true representation of the different types of accommodation, and, really, it depends on your interests. If you wish to have a longer stay with friends ( or not, as the case maybe) then the house with its own garden and 2 bedrooms and bathrooms, is perfect. Lella is an excellent host, and the castle area itself is so peaceful that it's hard to leave. The area is an interesting one to explore, but you do need a car. We found the beautiful little town of Cividale del Fruili, and Castelmonte on one occasion and returned again. Grado is close enough to swim at, or eat at one of the many ristoranti there. Strassoldo is well situated for exploring the Friuli region, but very close to Slovenia, which is worthwhile exploring as well.It can be explored by manageable day trips to their coastal towns as well as the mountains. You must have a 'vignette' , a pass for their tollways, which can be bought at the nearest petrol station to the border. As always, too much to do. But don't forget to relax in the castle grounds with a glass of wine. The place will provide you with lovely memories by itself.
