“Scandic Talk, Stockholm Sweden”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

Fantastic Hotel, was on the 14th floor, brilliant view (esp of the thunder & lightning show) Looking over southern Stockholm, room was bright, bed was a little too soft for me, but it didn't stop me from sleeping, nice modern bathroom, fridge & TV. Wide choice of TV channels, but, you don't go on holiday to watch TV. 5/10min walk from the main line railway stn, 50mins direct to Arlanda and 10mins to Stockholm Central. Hotel situated in a quiet residential area, immediately adjacent to Stockholmassen, the convenction centre, a small shopping centre with all everyday essentials 10 min stroll just the other side of the railway stn.

Breakfast was superb, european breakfast, cold meats etc also fruit, cereal, and some hot food (bacon, sauages, beans, scrambled eggs) lovely fresh rolls, Tea, coffee & fruit juices, breakfast room rather small, one morning I went down and it was full, so left and returned 30mins later. Lots of families there with small children and the usual you get from that.....

Rooms, no noises from other rooms or in the corridor, wiil say, was no where near the lifts, so it may be noisier there. Aircon, very quiet and very good

All in all, loved the hotel, a bit outside Stockholm city centre, but would stay here again!

Room Tip: Higher floor, better view!

I give this hotel a very generous 3-star rating, but in reality it offers a below average accommodation for the following reasons:

Room - The rooms are bright and good size by European standards, but cleaning is poor. Upon check-in I noticed black stains on the hardwood floor and despite multiple requests, the floor was not mopped until my third day of stay. The dirty wine glasses in my room were not replaced for two days and when I complained to the front desk, I was told that since they had recently become Scandic Hotel, their 'cleaning routine' had changed!….The pillows had a musty odor with stains on them. Furniture pieces were old with dents, but the worst of all was that yellow chair at the desk. I don't recall ever seeing a chair in such a poor condition, let alone in a supposedly 4.5 star hotel. The seat and arms were torn off with stains all over. After the front desk staff physically checked the chair, they replaced it with one from another room which was just in a slightly better condition, still torn off but with fewer stains.

Breakfast - A wide selection especially if you like American-style breakfast with eggs and meat. But if you are a tea and pastry person like me, you will be disappointed. The only choices of pastry were small croissants and some dry biscuits - no cake, muffin, or so. Tea is a low quality teabag and the coffee and juices are from the machine. Having said that, they offer good selection of everything else such as fruits, cereals, bread, cheese, etc. The breakfast room is more like a daycare with lots of kids running and screaming as there are many guests with young kids staying at this hotel. There was not a single day that I had my breakfast without one or two babies crying and screaming at tables around me.

Location - I don't see any reason why one should choose this hotel for the price if not attending a conference at the conference center next to the hotel. There is nothing in the neighborhood of this hotel and the train ride to the city center takes on average 20 minutes including the waiting time (longer on weekends). If you are a tourist, this hotel doesn't offer enough to compensate for staying far from the city center.

This is a basic hotel by the convention center. The service was rather poor. They forgot to clean our room, there was no shower gel and the internet had issues to connect to our devices. Housekeeping is only working during the day. The rooms are ok, but with a small TV. The only positive was the breakfast. During the summer holiday there is a lot of families staying in the hotel. Parking is not free, you need to pay 185 SEK per night for the garage.

Room Tip: Ask for high floor to avoid the traffic noise. To have even less noise ask for a room facing the con...

Unfortunately I didn't like much about this hotel. It took a long time to check in even though the hotel felt empty. Once in my room there was no toilet paper and no tissues, that was obviously a mistake but what was deliberate was no amenities. No shampoo, lotion etc, nothing in the mini bar, no water, nothing. The rooms are reasonably modern and very convenient for the exhibition center next door but next time I'm staying in the city.

Room Tip: Avoid if you don't like children as there are a lot of them! You should find the hotel is quiet...

My wife, 2 kids (ages 7 and 10) and I had a 4-night stay in this conference hotel in Alvsjö, using it as a base to explore Stockholm. The hotel itself is about a 5 minute walk (rather steep incline) from the Alvsjö station, and there is a roof over most of the path which helps when it rains. Trains into and out of Stockholm ran very frequently. I think it took about 10 min from the Alvsjö stop to Centralen. Things worked out very well for us because the hotel is very large and was more-or-less empty, I guess because the summer season had begun. They had even gone so far as to set up entertainment for kids in some of the conference space -- there were lots of toys, playhouses, and a movie "theater" e t c, and even a floor hockey court. The hotel itself changed names from Rica Talk to Scandic Talk on the second day of our stay. We awoke to have a mini-helicopter outside our window lifting the gigantic Scandic sign onto the roof. Never seen anything like that before. We stayed on the 9th floor (high-speed passcard-secured elevators) against the busy street, but we were high enough up that the road noise was not an issue. In fact, the hotel is "lined" with plexiglass walls outside the normal walls like a shell, which I think helps with the road noise. The room itself was very tight for the 4 of us. A bit too tight. We has anticipated a larger room since we were 4, but they just tossed a couple of extra beds into it. So one had to climb over beds continuously. The room was tired but clean; however, there was a positive airflow into our bathroom from elsewhere in the hotel which resulted in an unpleasant smell. There was also a strange clouded "window" between the room itself and the bathroom so that if you turned on the light in the bathroom at night, you woke everyone up. I guess the idea was to let light into the bathroom -- had never seen that before. The room boasted a first-generation flat screen TV mounted on the wall to which a laptop could not be connected. Wifi was free and worked reasonably well, but you had to renew every 24 hours. There was a safe for valuables in the room. The hallway was carpeted which reduced the noise from passers-by. There were even some working ice machines on certain of the floors, which was unusual I thought. We also thought the breakfast was pretty comprehensive and really quite satisfactory. The variation was such that one could choose a different breakfast "theme" for each of the 4 days. There was also a lower service table just for kids so that they could pick and choose for themselves. There was also a pub and I guess a smaller evening kitchen connected to it. Other than that, dining choices in the area were rather few. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised and would certainly consider staying here again. That said, I can imagine that the atmosphere is quite a bit different when conference season is underway and the place is packed.

Room Tip: The higher the better. On one side is a busy street and on the other side are the train tracks.

The only reason to stay there is if your meeting is being held there. The rooms are small, badly kept and simple. Very simple breakfast. Lunch served at the restaurant was terrible. The only positive aspect was the reception's staff, who were helpful whenever needed.

This is the best possible choice for trips related to activities in the Stockholmsmässan conference centre which is literally next door. I have visited Stockholm twice, both times for business in the conference centre, the first time I stayed in the city centre and the next in the Scandic. My feeling was that it is not really convenient for sightseeing -I prefer to walk/run to the city rather than use transport, which is necessary when staying in the Scandic. On the other hand, it's great if you have work to do in the Stockholmsmässan, you can always go downtown easily by train and the hotel itself is clean, has all the amenities and offers nice view in the higher floors.

Recommended under certain conditions, i.e. work in the Stockholmsmässan, otherwise I'd rather stay closer to the city centre.
