“Restaurant good hotel not yet”
Reviewed 24 October 2013 via mobile

We had been wanting to eat here for some time but did not want to drive afterwards so booked when the hotel opened and we were put back as it was not finished.
Restaurant : despite the hotel saying we would have to drive to the restaurant, we walked, (500 metres) might not be fun in the rain! We had the reduced degustation menu. Excellent start with a choice of good champagne, canapés, amuse bouche, both entrees exquisite, the fish superb, however the Challans duck was average at best. This was followed by a top class cheese selection then a dessert amuse bouche then two desserts and the chocolate trolley. For me the meal lacked balance overall with the long dessert finish overwhelming.
The builders were still in the hotel. I thought the modern rooms were slightly too austere for my liking and the layout seemed to be designed by someone who does not stay in hotels. We had to change rooms at 1.30am as the lighting system had a mind of its own. Also Poor WIFI strength in the room. Breakfast was cooked in the dining room and whilst excellent in every aspect made little or no allowance for the size of dinner, a tad too much for me.

They promised to send a copy of the menu, six weeks on we are still waiting.

A lot of money not delivering the overall experience we anticipated.

“Beautiful high-end cuisine in the depth of the French countryside”
Reviewed 2 September 2013

We had heard very positive comments on Thierry Drapeau's restaurant in St Sulpice le Verdon, which happens to be a 50-mn drive away from our holiday house in Les Sables d'Olonne (Atlantic coast). The 2-star rating granted by the "Guide Michelin" convinced us to make the trip and to discover the nice and romantic setting of the "Logis de la Chabotterie".

To make a long story short, we went there on a Thursday for a family lunch (4 adults and 2 children) and we were not even finished that we decided to book another lunch the following Sunday (this time with 5 adults and 2 children) !
The food was simply exquisite, from the starters to the desserts.

Mrs Drapeau, who supervises the service, is a very friendly host and she knows how to make you feel comfortable, despite the fact that she only offers "mystery menus"! As a matter of fact, and unless you opt for the 3-course lunch menu (not available on w/e) you have to decide if the 7-course degustation menu is enough to discover all the talents of the Chef or if you dare to push the limit with the 9-course menu! In all cases, you will not know what you are going to eat before the plate is put on the table in front of you...
While we were a bit unsettled at first, it is important to say that no one in our party was unpleased with the Chef's recipes. Each with a touch of creativity, the dishes were all among the most refined and pleasant we have ever had. Apart from our younger daughter who sticked with the kid's menu (excellent by the way, and it is worth noting that the kid's menu comes with the same "amuse-bouches" as those of the degustation menu), we all opted for the 7-course one: 2 delicious starters, followed by fish and then meat, then a good choice of cheeses and a splendid finish with 2 desserts...
The wine list is fine and the menu can be completed by a choice of wines of the Sommelier (which we did not take).
Prices are such that the value for money ratio is unmatchable.
Service was nice and the staff were even more friendly during our 2nd lunch, for which Mrs Drapeau had made sure that we would not have the same combination of dishes as in our 1st lunch.

We had 2 wonderful lunch experiences in this very nice restaurant and we certainly look forward to returning to this place in the coming months.

The only drawback is the location, which is a bit far away but Mr & Mrs Drapeau are addressing this handicap by opening a modern and nicely decorated 4-star hotel a few hundred meters from the restaurant, so that customers will be able to take their time and enjoy the full hospitality of the place.

This beautiful table is really worth a try.

“A really good find … a top class restaurant in a unique location beside a castle”
Reviewed 10 August 2012

We decided to treat ourselves to a nice restaurant while on holiday and ended up choosing this restaurant as it was in a country-side setting rather than in a big town or city. The reviews we saw were good and we decided to give it a try. We booked Sunday lunch and drove over from our base in Les Sables d’Olonne. It was easy to find and well sign-posted on the major routes. The restaurant is in a converted building beside the chateau. We were greeted warmly by Karine (who turned out to be the wife of the chef – Thierry Drapeau) in English and in French. While one of us is French the other was delighted that the staff were able to explain the dishes in English too.
The dining room was fantastic and quite full on a Sunday afternoon which we thought was a good sign. Really high ceiling and thick old stone walls meant that even on a warm French afternoon the room was cool. After we were seated, the menu was explained to us in French and in English. Afterwards the food started to arrive. From tempting amuses-bouches to sumptuous main courses and decadent desserts the food was wonderful. While it definitely had that wow factor you get with 2 star Michelin, the food also tasted great and was interesting to eat with lots of different things to try with each course.
The staff were very attentive and knowledgeable, while not being intrusive. Karine came around for a quick chat which was really nice and we found out more about the area from her. The thing that was really fun was the fact that many of the courses were presented on old-style wooden trolleys. When you heard the wheels coming, you could not help but stare at the amazing amount of choice that was available. We had the bread trolley, the cheese trolley, and a few others as well.
After a fantastic afternoon, we finished off with a walk around the chateau – just enough to aid the digestion after such a wonderful meal. Next time we are in the area we will be back. To sum up, a wonderful experience with fantastic food in a countryside location and excellent service. Book now if you are in the area.

“Best of the best”
Reviewed 7 August 2012

What can I say that others have not? I had a perfect lunch experience. In the last 2 months that I travelled France I had the pleasure to eat at some of the best restaurants the country has to offer. Thierry Drapeau has eclipsed them all (even Mirazur, which now is only second on my list).

The fact that a chef includes his signature dishes as part of a very well priced lunch menu says a lot about his passion to cook the best possible food for every single one of his customers.

Generosity and positive surprises all along made this meal so exceptional, together with the incredible attention to detail. The meal included so many different components, I would love to have the same menu again just to appreciate it even more. But I would also love to try out everything else coming from that kitchen. The plates on neighbouring tables that had ordered different menus looked very exciting too.

The only regret I have is that since that meal I have not enjoyed eating elsewhere much - nothing comes even close...

Compared to some other Michelin Star restaurants this one certainly earns it's two. Enjoyed it from the moment we entered the door, very friendly and courteous staff without being too casual, just the right balance of formality and friendliness. The food was amazing from start to finish and made all the more enjoyable by having each course explained in detail as it was served.
