We stayed in room 12 with a great view and super bathroom. The only thing that spoiled our visit was the food. We ate in the restaurant. The menu sounds up-market but the food was over priced and badly cooked -breakfast bacon like a board, beef in the stroganoff burned, and tough steak smothered with mango jam makes for a mess not a Michelin star. They pride themselves on their chef but he needs to learn how to cook.

As a business we very much appreciate the feed back from our customers. The reviewer has been good enough to comment on the standard of the accommodation and service and has given us the best possible ratings.

However as a well established family business we do pride ourselves on our standard of food and we find these comments rather malicious.

We appreciate from time to time a customer may not be satisfied with the meal and we accept this, but our Chef has an international background and comments of this nature need to be supported with some degree of personal experience on the part of the reviewer.

Our reputation is second to none and the level of business reflects this, our menu is extensive and we consider it to be very good value for money.

Comments like these are not in anyone’s interest when they are hidden behind a cloak of secrecy, we would therefore respectfully ask that the reviewer to contact us so we can discuss the issues in a more open manner.

We stayed at the Pier House for two nights. The hotel is nicely situated and we had a lovely view. The room was adequate with a comfy bed and shower but incredibly hot with no way of turning the heating down. What was perhaps most disappointing was the lack of enthusiasm from the staff. We were treated with indifference and felt like we were in the way, a smile and some kind of customer service would definitely have helped.

This hotel was booked as a special ''big'' birthday treat. We were to have stayed two nights but events there meant we were only able to stay one.
We booked room 9 as it's one of the refurbished rooms with views however, we were not informed either by the website or by the person with whom we had email dealings that there is a full ( 13) flight of stairs between the bedroom and the en-suite bathroom. We would not have booked the room or, very possibly, the hotel if we'd known this.
As it was, we were there and had to stay somewhere. We were able to inspect a couple of other rooms, the one we chose, reluctantly, was a lower grade of room, room 3.
This room turned out to be above the restaurant from which we heard general sounds and murmuring until about 10:30 when the restaurant closed. It was the sound from the adjoining rooms that was most irritating-- we could not only hear the neighbours' TVs but also them constantly opening and closing drawers and, later on, snoring!!

As for the accommodation itself: the hotel bills as an 'exquisite' hotel. I would class it as akin to a US Best Western, bland and characterless with cheap fixtures and fittings.
What really let them down were the horribly uncomfortable cheap, slab-like pillows and the board stiff duvet. These items belonged more in a cheap Travelodge than in a 'so called' exquisite hotel.
We didn't dine in the hotel, that had been reserved for our second night. We went into the Bistro but the menu, no specials board, was standard pub food. Instead, and a good thing too, we went down the road to Wreckers.
We've had correspondence with the management but no more has been said than '' sorry you feel your weekend was ruined''.
We won't be back and we won't recommend. They did ruin our weekend.

Firstly we would like to refer to all previous comments, we appreciate that we are not always able to please everyone but in this case the room allocated has been refurbished to a very high standard and all fixtures and fittings are of the highest quaility. The main complaint referred to the stairs to the bathroom area, we consider this to be a feature in the room and have received very favourable comments from our other customers.

During our refurbishment programme careful attention was applied to the sound proofing element and we have not received a complaint of this nature before.

We feel we did as much as possible to rectify the problems during their stay and have written a letter after their departure.

My wife and I stayed at the Pier House for 4 nights in August 2010. We had room 9 on the top floor. It was obviously recently refurbished a good sized comfortable room with a dressing room/bathroom up another flight of stairs running the length of the building. Spa bath and seperate shower. There is no lift but we were aware of that from the website and email communication with the hotel.
We were also aware that the hotel had no parking but we were given a voucher for the Rashleigh Arms Car Park. which is a short walk up the hill. This was fine apart from the first night when it was full. Also Beware the rough surface in the Car Park.
Room 9 had a great view from the windows over the small harbour and out to sea and at the side over the Wharf area. Although busy around the harbour we were not bothered by noise in the room. Bed was queen sized and comfortable. Check in was efficient. Service in the breakfast room was fine and a good breakfast was provided although some people may want more than a choice of two fruit juices.
We had dinner in the restaurant on one night and the food was good and the staff handled what could have been an uncomfortable situation with another dining group with good humour and efficiency.
A great spot for a few nights away at anytime. I hope they keep it up

A one-night stay prior to visiting the Eden Project in this great little out-of-season location, with views of the sea beyond the picturesque but little-used harbour (apart from two elegant tall ships which really lent a 19th century feel to the place).
Room 12 was spotless with good bathroom, big comfy bed and a sea view.
Dinner was good quality and reasonable value, and the staff we met were cheery and friendly.
The hotel was warm and comfortable in exceptionally cold weather.
