The Athena Hotel is a 19th century villa which has been completely refurbished , it is the only one of the valley. We were given a clean and medium sized room with a beautiful view of the temples ,that are at a very close distance from the hotel; the room was satisfactory considering it is a five star hotel, but it could have been better. However we were were not at all satisfied with the restaurant, we found the service to be very poor , and the food badly cooked (I had to send my meal back to the cook because the pasta was glued together into one big ball !) with an extreemly slow service, one of the reasons being that there was a wedding going on in the garden,so there was unnecessary noise and confusion. This was topped off by a very high bill and no apologies. Overall I do not recommend a stay at the hotel and certainly not a meal at the restaurant, but I do recommend a drink there at around seven-thirty to see the temples at dusk and the lights go on under them...

We stayed as a family for one night and found the hotel to be very clean and well designed. The staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant is NOT designed for families, especially the dinner menu. It is Gourmet but as we did not have dinner i cannot comment on it. They should really have some good kids menu options. We went into town instead for dinner and being a Monday, many restaurants are closed. The staff were extreamely helpful and searched the internet and rang around town to find the restaurants that were open for family dining. The pool area is very relaxing and the view from the room is incomparable. The price of the hotel is really all about location....a similar quality boutique hotel in a nice country location without the ruins would be about 20% less probably.

Room Tip: definitly a higher floor

Checked in for a quick one night stay. The room was beautiful with all white decor. Very chic. Awesome shower with best pressure in Europe. Pool service a little spotty but okay. Restaurant view not to be believed with a gorgeous view of the temples. Marred only by snotty service from maitre'd and waiters for our group of 20. Really very disappointing attitudes from supposed professionals. Did not recipient this kind of treatment anywhere else in Sicily. Please fix the food service experience and this will be a true five star experience.

Room Tip: View of the temples.

Villa Athena is beautiful. The rooms are immaculate, extremely comfortable and well appointed. However, we were a little disappointed with the lack of space to store our clothes From your room, you see the 2000 year old Greek temples set on a hilltop around a quarter mile away. The view at sunrise, sunset and throughout the night is spectacular. Make sure that you include a visit to the Greek temple (10 euro per person- discount for seniors) as part of your trip here. Take lots and lots of water if you are here in July or August when the temperature can reach 110. We were here in the beginning of June, and the weather was ideal with temps ranging from the high 70's to the low 90's.

If you make a reservation here, make sure you ask if there are any events or parties scheduled during your stay. One night there was a wedding that didn't end until 2 in the morning. We got vey little sleep that night because of the loud music.
The staff here is wonderful. They are accommodating and polite. After you check in (after 2:00 pm), make sure you have lunch in their beautiful outdoor cafe. It was delicious. There is a lovely pool and sitting area where you can relax and cool off after a day of sightseeing. We had a lovely room with an outdoor terrace where you could enjoy cocktails or just curl up with a good book . The pool was enticing and cool.

Breakfast at Villa Athena was superb. They had a lovely selection of fruits, yoghurts, breads, croissants, and they served freshly prepared omelets to suit your taste. Then we had dinner at their restaurant. This turned out to be a big mistake on our part. Although our waiter seemed to be charming at first, he disappeared for most of the night. There were three other tables and a staff of four. One would think that with so few people eating dinner, that the meal would be hot. The main dish was warm and the potatoes were cold. No one came over to us during the two and one and a half hours we were there, to ask us if our meals were satisfactory.

Bottom line is: this is a wonderful hotel but skip dinner. Also find out ahead of time if there will be a late-night noisy party.

Room Tip: Our sleep quality was terrible because of a noisy wedding till two in the morning one night, and ano...

The reason to come to Agrigento is to see the ruins, and you can't see them better than from the Hotel Athena (at least until you actually go in to the ruins site). This is a beautifully decorated and sited property, with most rooms featuring views of the temples. The pool is a delight in the hot weather, and the outdoor terrace is a great place to have dinner and enjoy the lighted splendor of the temples. We found the service only so-so, as the front desk didn't have maps of the area and was less than helpful when we were looking to visit the old town of Agrigento. Nice breakfast as well.

Never in our lives did we think we could have our breath figuratively "taken away" as we would enter a hotel room, until we walked into our room in Agrigento's Hotel Villa Athena. Breathtaking may be an over used term, but on our trip to Sicliy this past April / May it was a fact several times.

Prior to our trip we looked at hotel websites and our itinerary as we tried to preview, find a little history and have a geography lesson as we did out prep. That usually includes a photo gallery, but this time the reality of the vista of the Valley of the Temples from our excellent and modern room was better than the professional photos! Whether on a sunny afternoon, sunrise or upon returning from dinner, when the temples are lighted at night, the sight was beautiful!

We had a beautifully decorated room with a huge terrace, that actually joined three other terraces. We took advantage of this amenity for larger gatherings (10-18) for pre-dinner cocktails, with the ever present Temple of Concordia always in our view, only several hundred yards away. You truly had to pinch yourself since it was such an outstanding focal-point of beauty and history. The pool area was equally lovely with the ever-present Concordia, with almond tree groves surrounding the hotel, the valley between the hotel and the ridge with the three main temples.

The breakfasts were very good, though at the waiters pace for cook to order items. The breakfast dining area is not in view of the temples, though as you enter the dining entrance you literally walk-over an archaeological excavation. The hotel and the surrounding grounds are all built on the ancient city of Akragas.

We did not have dinner or lunch at the hotel, so I am unable to provide an Excellent rating. We did though have a wonderful multi-course meal at Kokolas Ristorante, within a short drive of the hotel and located on a hillside with a view of several temples. Kokolas seemed to be a very popular place for the locals, with full typical Sicilian meals and a huge wood-fired oven for pizza!

Finally, a short drive from Agrigento is San Leone, and the Trattoria Caico Ristorante! WOW what a fabulous meal! The house specialty is fresh seafood, but other irtme are available. Service was superb! The presentations were beautiful and on our Sicilian holiday with outstanding food daily, Trattoria Caico was at the top of the list! Trattoria Caico too catered to a local clientele, which is always a good sign.

For our first trip to Sicily, lodging like Villa Athena was spectacular and yes, breathtaking.

Room Tip: They do have a lower level facing the temples, but it is low and the trees block any view of the tem...

It just goes to show you can't please all the people all the time. We just spent one night, and it was all perfect. Our room was beautiful, the view will take your breath away. We had a good dinner on the terrace, slept in comfort, had a great breakfast, took a tour in the morning, ate lunch again on that wonderful terrace over looking the temples. All three meals were fine some excellent and service could not have been better. The hotel arranged a wonderful tour guide, Lorrenzo, to take us through the archelogical site. We later swam and had drinks poolside, changed and left . They brought our bags up and down each time and held them while we swam before leaving. It is the only way to visit this area in my opinion. I will return, it was well worth it. FYI: We are experienced well travelled this is my 20th time in italy and this is a great spot and a very good hotel.
