If you're looking for a place to use as a home base while exploring Sicily, this is NOT it. That being said, if you're on an adventure like we were, this place is perfect for two nights. Your mileage may very.
Having landed in Palermo at the beginning of a 14 day trip organized by a friend with a group of coworkers and their spouses, it was our first stop. 9 Hours from JFK, one hour lay over in Rome, one hour flight to Palermo, One hour to clear customs and get luggage. Two hours in Palermo for lunch and a quick peek around the city, and then two hours plus drive to Agrigento. You do the math.
When you add all the times up, it = we are all about to fall on our butts from exhaustion.
What better way to de-plane, de-stress, and cure jet lag, then by grabbing a beer and sitting in one of the best pools I ever saw in my life…and I have seen some pools. It's huge by any standards.
Blue Hotel Kaos (pronounced Cows) is a magnificent property overlooking the Ionian sea at the very bottom of Sicily. The rooms are new, nicely appointed, and if you're lucky (like we were) some have balconies which overlook the pool and the ocean. Past the pool, walking toward the sea, are groves of lemons, olives and almond trees. You never can reach the sea..legally. You can reach the cliffs by climbing through a hole in the fence. The pools is surrounded by flowering bushes of all sorts.
Since there really is only one thing to see in the area, we weren't compelled to push ourselves to the breaking point the first day. We didn't have far to go to reach it after traveling. One stop in any church would have had me excommunicated from a variety of religions for my language. The hotel, it's bar and it's pool made for a perfect first day.
The next day we woke to the smell of fresh baked bread. The food here is often a main topic of conversation. I found breakfast great, and so did my picky as heck wife. It was buffet, and had many offerings more like what we consider "Antipasti". Fresh cut meats, fresh baked bread, a vast amount of cheeses, scrambled eggs, cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit. The bread was to die for, and we ALL grabbed napkins and made sandwiches for later. We left for the temples about 8:30AM
Valley of the temples is a very, very short drive and is MAGNIFICENT. We went the very end of July and it was HOT. But Magnificent.
Go early, while the temperature is only at "can fry an egg" and hasn't reached "I think I'm going to pass out".
We spent three hours exploring the breathtaking ruins with no crowds what so ever, and then caught lunch in the town of Agrigento. By 2PM we were back at the pool. The wonderful, wonderful, pool.
Dinner is by no means the God awful pig slop some have described. It was average, with some things very good, nothing awful. Breakfast, however, is the absolutely the star here. I enjoyed dinner more than my wife, because I eat almost everything that swims, and the antipasti buffet at dinner had lots of seafood choices.
To be frank, I also eat meat of dubious description on a stick, from New york pushcarts.
"She who must be obeyed" got by on salads, fruits, and whatever the pasta offering was.
The morning of the third day we were up early, stealing sandwiches from breakfast, and off on our way to Taormina for three nights.
If you need a place to start an adventure and work you way up, Blue Hotel Kaos and Arigento's Valley of the Temples is a perfect start. We Loved it! If you're looking to spend more than two nights there (and are not a resident of some other part of Sicily looking for a relaxing break) you may not be as happy.
