“Great Hidden Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2010

My husband and I recently stayed at the Demetra Resort which was extremely relaxing. Our only regret is that we did not stay longer. Make sure to take in the grounds filled will lemon and lime trees. The staff was friendly and very welcoming. The breakfast was very nice and filling. They do not have a pool on site however, their twin hotel 5 minutes away has one that guests are welcome to use. It is a bit tricky to locate but there are small signs posted. Located very near to the Valley of the Temple. Best advice when you book ask for detailed directions don't rely on your GPS!
For dinner make sure to try: Spizzulio (outstanding)

Demetra is a nice 4 star hotel, outside the city, with upstairs living bedroom and bathroom and downstairs TV and Couch. Staff was extremely helpful, after spending the day at the valley of the temples, the hotel is a great place to relax. The restaurant is very good, no need to leave the hotel. Getting there without GPS is not simple, you can get directions from the Museum staff close by.

I agree absolutely with everything that Cogwa from Sussex said about this place, so I won't repeat it all. This isn't a 'resort' at all - it's just an OK hotel with a reasonable restaurant, that's all; and the only reason for going here in the first place is to see the Temples (which, fortunately, are worth the trip, and are very close to the hotel). The hotel is also very difficult to find, Google maps are too vague, so good luck...Agrigento itself is a total dump, and I confirm Cogwa's comments about the rest of the South coast of Sicily, only relieved, in our case, by Siracusa, which was the highlight of our trip.

I also applaud Cogwa's warning about the driving in Sicily which is spot-on. Hiring a car is a must if you want to see the island, but the standard of driving, and the standard of the roads is a uniform and total disgrace. Driving in Palermo is a nightmare, and if you hire a car make sure it's heavily insured against damage. I thought it was a bit odd when I had to deposit 1200 Euros at the car hire place - now I know why. Driving a car in Sicily is, by far, the most dangerous I have ever encountered, and calls for a cool nerve, and a good navigator, because road signs are frequently non-existent too.

The Hotel was hard to find - thanks to Googlemaps we finally made it. The hotel has à beautiful Garden, the rooms are comfortable, spacious ans clean. Overall à very pleasant athmosphere. The restaurant is traditional Italian and à Bit overpriced. Breakfast is very good. To make it a real 4 Star resort the owner has to add à pool - the Lack of the swimming Pool is the only negative of this Hotel.

Note, Expedia is WRONG: this hotel is not a resort - there's no pool or spa here (we were told on arrival "there's a problem with the pool" - seemingly the biggest one being no-one's built it yet.) In other respects, it's a nice, clean, new hotel, one of the better in the area, wih a great restaurant, but it's location is just odd - yes, it's close to the Valley of the Temples as advertised, but also adjacent to the main east/west highway and looks to be in the middle of a redundant palm tree farm. You're not getting a sea view here. You do get use of the pool at it's seafront sister hotel - Discouri Bay Palace - but this is a 10 minute drive away.

This all combines to make the hotel the perfect metaphor for Sicily itself. Yes, there are beaches, but most of them are next to industrial or urban development areas, making them reasonably dirty and unpleasant to all but he most committed (or,apparently, Italians). The towns along this coast also carry the appearance of being run down and/ or unfinished - some tourist-oriented developments have been started, but remain unfinished and you cannot escape the underlying poverty of this area. Photogenic, it's not.

If you're still thinking of coming here, head to Ereclea Minoa for a good beach and Sciacca for a town. Wherever you go, you absolutely need a car, but beware - the driving is third world level and makes Rome look organised.

This hotel is located on the outskirts of the town of Agrigento, within sight of the temples of the Valle dei Templi. Immaculately kept by dedicated, helpful staff who did their best to make us feel welcome. The rooms are large, well furnished, leading to a shaded patio area. We found this an ideal base for rest and recuperation after the exertions of temple visits. Beautifully kept grounds and gardens.

The hotel is set just off one of the main regional roads around Agrigento and is surrounded by what looks like a now disused fruit tree garden. The garden gives this hotel the atmosphere of an agriturismo, only is this of course larger scale and better appointed. Our room was not on the garden side but on the highway side of the building, which gave a little bit of noise nuisance but it was easy enough to filter out using earplugs.

The room itself was a two story thing, with the bathroom up a steep flight of steps. Never seen it this way before, and it does make you think twice about going to the toilet in the middle of the night. The decoration of the room was fine though nothing exceptional, and the same is true for the bathroom. Frankly I have a feeling that we were given one of the low cost rooms, which is probably fair enough since we booked a cheap deal on the internet. Rooms with a view of the garden are probably bigger, certainly don't have noise from the highway, and don't have the in-house staircase to the bathroom. That said, I still found it a nice place and would recommed staying here, though don't even think about it when you don't have your own transport.

  • Liked — Fruit garden surroundings
  • Disliked — Staircase to the bathroom inside the hotel room
