“Simple accommodations, Good location, Lovely staff”
Reviewed 20 June 2010

Stayed for one night at the San Lorenzo. Staff was very welcoming, helpful and friendly. Location, right next to the main Duomo, was good - walkable in 5 mins to everything in Central Alba. The rooms are fine- very basic and clean. We had number 3, which had a small balcony overlooking the Duomo. The only downside are the continual church bells, but I didn't notice it after a while. A/C is good, and bed and pillows are comfortable. Lonely planet said they refer to themselves as a "boutique" hotel, which I'm not sure is too accurate. But the breakfast in the bakery downstairs is very good, and the coffee is fantastic.

Free parking and internet helps make it a good deal. Definitely a good spot for a night or two to explore Alba.

The staff spoke execellent English and were very helpful during our 3 night stay in Alba. Serena and another young lady at the reception helped us make enquiries, booked a car with driver, and also recommended places to eat. The hotel is one floor up (I think there's a lift) from a cafe, where we had the best ever cappuccino. We didn't try the cakes or cookies, which looked really delicious.

The albergo is about a 15-minute walk from the train station and located just behind the San Lorenzo church. The Tourist Information office is about 100 meters from the hotel. We had a room facing the courtyard, which was really the carpark for guests, because we were advised that it would be quieter. The room was simple but the toilet was huge by Italian standards. Not too sure if there's air conditioning in the summer because we saw a small, portable fan hidden in the cupboard. It's basically a "no frills" hotel, with a touch of charm. There's a free water dispenser in the main hall.

Alba itself is a small town, with shops and enoteca lining two main streets. You can stroll through the town in half a day. If you're not a wine lover, there's little else to do. A market is held every Saturday along the main streets of the town. Asti on the other hand, has better train connections and is larger compared to Alba, but not lacking in charm in anyway. Asti has enough shops to keep you entertained for a few days. It has a large city feel but at the same time, feels like a small town with its charming squares and porticos. However, surprisingly, Asti doesn't have any decent-sized shops to purchase wine.

Owned by the same family for over 200 years. They know their stuff. Welcoming, clean, efficient and friendly. We'll be back as Alba and San Lorenzo are magnetic to the traveller and there is still so much more to see. Great restaurant downstairs and plenty uptown.

I highly recommend this beautiful hotel in the center of alba within easy walking distance of everything...free car park in center courtyard and delightful chocolate shop and cafe next door. Sip local wines and proseccos with locals at nearby Vin Cafe. Enjoy world the many world class restaurants nearby. Leave your car at the Albergo. Great place for evening walks, sightseeing and enjoying the local flavors. This hotel offers excellent service and has a very nice breakfast included to get your day started.

We stayed at this property during the Alba truffle fest. It has a great location right in the center of town. It's easy to walk to all the sites and shops of the town. The room was simple but clean and a good value considering that Oct is the high season for Alba. The room had real queen bed rather than two beds pushed together which you see so often around Italy. There was also cable with a channel in English, French and German. The staff is very nice and helpful. In addition, the hotel is owned by the proprietors of an excellent bakery/cafe right downstairs. Guess where you eat breakfast? You basically get the same continental offerings found around Italy and Europe but at an altogether higher level of quality. A great option for a weekend in Alba and Piedmont.

  • Liked — A real queen sized bed and the breakfast at the cafe downstairs.
  • Disliked — No AC in my room but it wasn't an issue in Oct. Don't know if there's AC in other rooms.

We arrived in Alba on a rainy night in Dec. and found the town very quiet. The tourist info center was minimally helpful, and told us the location of several hotels in town. We walked over to the San Lorenzo and were very happy to find a clean friendly warm small hotel right in the middle of town. The rooms were minimalist and very clean, perfect for me. We started talking to the one of the owners and the person working that night and got lots of advice on things to do in town ect. They were very friendly and helpful. Overall I would highly recomend the San Lorenzo in Alba if you want a pleseant small hotel in Alba.
