Color Hotel
Ranked #2 of 43 Hotels in Bardolino
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 19 August 2012

After a long time deliberating over where to stay on our honeymoon, we came across the Color Hotel on Tripadvisor. The hotel had received many positive reviews and seemed to meet all the criteria that we were looking for.

On arrival, the first thing that strikes you is that the hotel is set back from a main road and not actually situated off the lake. Having said that, when you are actually in the hotel or the outdoor grounds, you can't hear any of the traffic so don't let that put you off.

The hotel is otherwise well located. It is next door to a supermarket which is very convenient and is only a very short walk into the centre of Bardolino.

Inside, the hotel has a clean, modern feel to it. Guests have the choice of 4 swimming pools and plenty of sun loungers and other seating areas around the pool in both the shade and sun. As well as there being a swimming pool, there was also a free table tennis table and free bike hire for guests.

The hotel had 2 computers which were free for guests to browse the internet on, plus free WIFI. The hotel also had a very good selection of DVDs which could be rented from reception for free (with a 20 euro deposit).

In terms of our room, we had booked into a suite and were pleasantly surprised on our arrival to see that our room had been decorated with balloons, confetti and bunting. We were also given a free celebratory bottle of prosecco.

The room was a good size with a massive double bed, of which we only probably occupies 1/4 of the space! The bathroom was also a decent size, with a good shower and a very relaxing jacuzzi bath.

The room was well air-conditioned, which was essential given how hot it was while we were staying.

What was really nice was the small touches that made our stay there so comfortable. In the room, there was a mini bar which was stocked with soft drinks, water and beer. The water and soft drinks were complimentary and refilled every day.

Bathrobes and slippers were also provided.

The hotel generally was very clean and we could not have faulted the maid service. The maids came in twice a day, leaving the room spotless and also leaving sweets in our room of an evening.

The hotel restaurant offered a good choice of food for breakfast, including cereals, fresh fruit, cooked meats, several different types of cheese, bread, cooked breakfasts and pastries. Breakfast quickly became a three course affair!

The hotel restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. Evening food, although slightly on the expensive side (compared to going for dinner in Garda), was of an excellent quality and definitely worth the money. It was well presented and very tasty.

As well as the restaurant, there is also a bar area by the pool which provides bar snacks and a large selection of drinks.

What really makes the Color Hotel a great place to stay is the friendliness of the staff. From the maids, the restaurant staff, the receptionists and the hotel manager. They were all very welcoming and could not have done enough for you.

Bardolino is a beautiful lakeside town, offering a range of restaurants, bars and shops and only a stones throw from the hotel. The medieval town of Lazise, Garda and Verona are also nearby places which are worth a visit.

In summary, if you are thinking of staying at the Color Hotel I would highly recommend it - a great place, not just for couples but also families.

Have just returned from a 9 night stay at The Color Hotel. A friend who had visited a few years ago recommended this hotel to us and this along with the tripadvisor reviews helped us make our mind up where to stay.
First impressions excellent - we had booked a taxi through the hotel and it was waiting for us when we arrived at Peschiera train station (cost 25 Euros). Check in straightforward, reception very welcoming. We were given a short guided tour of the hotel and facilities and then shown to our room. Help given with luggage.
Room with balcony was fairly small but had everything that we needed including quite a large bathroom. Did not have a view as such just looked into some bamboo trees but as this was one of the cheaper rooms it was perfectly acceptable. Towels and bed linen excellent quality and toiletries supplied as required.
I won't go into any great detail about the hotel buildings/furnishings/outdoor areas as plenty people have given excellent descriptions in previous reviews. Suffice to say this is an exceptionally well thought out hotel which really manages to merge the indoors and outdoors. Lots of lovely quirky, design ideas and everything spotlessly clean. We found the Sun Bay Garden particularly nice to sunbathe in under the olive trees.
Breakfasts had plenty of variety and coffee was topped up regularly. We had chosen the "Delicious Package" when we booked which entitled us to 3 dinners, 2 cocktails each and a welcome gift. This is the only negative thing I will say about the Color Hotel - the food we had was beautifully presented however the menu you choose from is not from the a la carte but from a very limited menu with lots of fish on it. I don't enjoy fish so had the same vegetarian menu twice. On the third occasion I asked if I could swap some things round and to be fair to them they did allow this . Lots of lovely places to eat in Bardolino so next time I wouldn't eat at the hotel. Also watch out for price of drinks -we asked for 2 glasses of Bardolino wine but the waiter gave us a recommendation to try some Valpolicello . Two glasses cost us 24 Euros but he hadn't shown us the wine list and we stupidly didn't ask the price! These are just little things to beware of but on the whole I have to say I found this a beautiful hotel with very pleasant staff and lots of lovely areas inside and outside. It is a convenient 10mins walk into the main town and although not right on the lake is a 5min walk to the lakeside promenade.
I would thoroughly recommend this hotel and indeed Bardolino for a fantastic holiday.

Just got back from a weeks stay at this hotel, 28th July 2012.

On arriving at the location we were dropped off in the bus station and not outside the hotel, which is on a busy main road and then we had to walk with our heavy suitcases to the hotel with no concierge help at all. Whilst we are relatively young and fit it was not much of a problem but for older clientele it would be difficult.

Reception was quick and efficient and we were shown to our room promptly. Whilst the room was exceptable and super clean we found it rather cramped with a rather subdued outlook onto a small garden which was overlooked by other balconies (room 101). The t.v. was an extreme disapointment with only one english speaking channel rather like QVC. No news at all!!

It was my husband's birthday whilst we were there and thought i would surprise him with a bottle of champagne brought from the U.K. We were dismayed when the bar staff wouldn't give us any ice for the occasion. All attempts at complaints did'nt settle this. There is a supermarket directly next door to the hotel so management should embrace the fact that people will buy from there and drink in the room especially as the bar prices in the hotel are sky high!.

Location of the hotel is ok with only a 10 minute walk into Bardolino centre. The hotel decor is pleasantly quirky with modern artwork in abundance. Pool areas are good, lifts good, and a free bicycle hire (4 hours) service. Breakfasts were dull - nothing new here. Same old same old help yerself eggs, bacon, fruit yaaaawn.

All in all, a pleasant stay but as this hotel has been number 1 in Bardolino for a few years, then they should watch out as there's a new kid on the block, Hotel Aqualux is hot on the heels.

Overall, we loved our stay at the Color Hotel and would happily recommend it. Bardolino is a great base to explore Lake Garda with a wide variety of shops and restaurants and good transport links. The hotel is only a short walk away from the town and didn't cause us any inconvenience at all.

The big pluses for the hotel are the exceptional pool areas (spotlessly clean and spacious, very relaxing); reception service (although they need to update their bus timetables as we were given an out of date one and waited for 2 buses that didn't exist); general seating areas (lovely space and choice of types of seat / sofas) and the free bike hire (which we used on 3 seperate occasions).
Our room was very nice - not particularly spacious and only a shower rather than a bath, but perfectly clean and comfortable. We were luckly to get a room which had a balcony area which overlooked the breakfast seating area and one of the pools rather than at the front of the hotel - although I think this would have been ok as there is a small driveway at the front of the hotel which seperates it from the busy road.

I quibbled with myself over whether to give 4 or 5 stars, and decided on 4 because of a few things that I think could be improved.
- Bar and drink prices are very expensive, and we were particularly shocked that there was a very limited choice of wines, with prices starting at €36. This in a location where it is common to get a carafe of house wine for well under €10. More reasonably priced drinks would have encouraged us to buy more at the hotel and use the lovely seating areas in the evening.
- We were given a 10% discount voucher for the restaurant - but this couldn't be used on a 'special evening'. We were coerced into attending the 'grand opening' of the roof top restaurant (which was one of said special events, as every evening seemed to be...) and felt that it was not very well managed. The food (self service buffet style) was nice, but very expensive, and as we couldn't justify the wine prices, ate it accompanied with water! More information about the event would have been helpful, plus a bit more direction on the evening itself.
- minibar prices should have been clearly marked beside the minibar. We got free bottles of water but as it turned out, not everything in the fridge was free and we had quite a bill at the end. In retrospect, we should have checked but any prospective charges should be clearly stated.
- there is a good choice of breakfast items, but as with everywhere around Lake Garda, the menu was perhaps more German influenced than we have experienced in other parts of Italy. Having to wait for the waiting staff to top up coffee was a little annoying - it would have been nice to have a pot on the table.
- as mentioned above, although we found the reception staff to be very helpful, we were given an out of date bus timetable which did disrupt our plans on two occasions.

So a very few little niggles which did not impact our overall very favourable impression of this hotel. We found it very relaxing,

Stayed at this hotel June 15th - 22nd for our anniversary.
We booked the celebrations package in the Mosaic Junior Suite and were given room 346.
The suite was smaller than we had expected but it was clean and well appointed.
Though the bathroom only had a shower it was a really good size and spotless.
The room faced the back of the hotel overlooking the pool with a lovely view to hills
in the back. Be warned though, none of the balconies are private and they can be
quite close to the neighboring rooms. The light on the balcony could not be turned out
which is a shame as it attracted an enormous amount of bugs which inevitably got
into the room each time the door was opened.
The staff were extremely nice and helpful. The pools were divine, there are 4.
Spread out across the property. The main large one Sunbay, which is really the only
one suitable for young children with shallow areas, is found by going through the
gate at the back/side of the property using your key and crossing a street and
opening a gate to the pool property which is massive in it's own gardens.
The undercover heated spa pool was divine with quite a few jets once you realize
how to activate them with the push buttons next to the jets. Having bar service at the pool is also
a plus. We could have happily spent all our days lounging by their fabulous pools.
As I'm extremely sensitive to the sun the undercover pool areas were an absolute
blessing.
Internet worked fine throughout the hotel.
We had dinner at the restaurant two nights and it was divine, food was fantastic
and service superb.
Breakfast was a vast spread of options. Very few hot options were available though.
Scrambled Eggs or Boiled eggs. A German type sausage and Bacon, which probably
is not cooked crispy enough for British or American standards. But for European
breakfast it was exceptional with loads of choices on pastries, cereals, breads,
continental meats & cheese and fruit.
Overall the hotel and restaurant might be considered expensive but I find you usually
get what you pay for and I feel the stay was well worth the price.

Room Tip: If you want a view of the lake ask for a top floor to the front of the building but expect to also b...
