“Great holiday”
Reviewed 11 March 2014 via mobile

I totally agree with all the positive comments shared in previous reviews. We've just returned after a memorable family skiing holiday in Bardonecchia, with La Betulla proving to be a great base.

The food was plentiful and tasty, with a varied choice every evening, and the antipasti served as a first course was delicious. The service was no-fuss, and nothing was too much trouble for the friendly waiters.

The free bar was a big hit with our children for the unlimited soft drinks and hot chocolate, and Michaela deserves an award for her wonderful hot chocolate with fresh cream. What could be better after a day on the slopes!

Rooms were warm with a plentiful supply of hot water and our family room, for four, was spacious.

As previously mentioned, the bar and lounge area is a great sociable location for residents to meet to discuss and share the day's skiing stories.

Two points on the skiing - we saved a fortune by booking our skis and boots from rent and go, rather than through Crystal. However the ski tuition booked through Crystal with the Italian ski school provided an excellent level of teaching. Our four year old, although rather uncertain at first, was soon smiling by the end of her first morning with 'Valerio' and his colleague, Manuela, and thoroughly enjoyed her morning ski sessions. She also made excellent progress during the week.

So all in all, thank you Bardonecchia and Hotel La Betulla! Highly recommended for a great family experience.

We returned yesterday from a fantastic ski trip in Bardonecchia. First of all, we got a very good deal from Crystal (all inclusive). The rooms: basic is the word I would use to describe them. We had a room with a balcony which was a great sun trap. Always had hot water, and while the TV's colour went a bit funny every now and then, we didn't come to Bardo to watch Italian game shows! Rooms were very clean, just a bit run down but served it's duty as a place to rest your head. Walls are pretty thin though so bear that in mind.

Betulla does what it says on the tin - a basic hotel, but very good value. Location is good as it only a short stroll to town and we'd often walk back to the hotel just to stretch the legs after spending the day in ski boots. Free shuttle bus outside the hotel, and the hotel also has a ski locker if you need to use it.

Now onto the food. Breakfast was continental - fresh bread rolls, croissants, cake, muesli, cereal, boiled eggs, ham, salami, jams, yoghurt and juices. You selected you mains for the evening meal at breakfast, so make sure you let them know out of courtesy if you won't be dining in that evening. Meals were good and substantial, with an antipasto buffet to begin every meal that includes a salad bar selection. You would then be served a pasta course, followed by a meat course. There would be 2-3 choices for each course - and for a hotel of it's size that's pretty darn good. Call a spade a spade - it's not five star dining but what do you expect? Always a different choice. I'm not a dessert person, but the desserts were varied as well.

Now the free wine and spirits were an excellent addition to the package and they were very VERY generous. Michaela behind the bar was genuinely one of the nicest staff members I've ever come across in a hotel. ALWAYS greeted you with a smile and filled your glass to the brim. Included was beer, wine, prosecco, gin, brandy, 'baileys', aperitivo, limoncello etc. Fantastic value and very generous.

HUGE lobby area as well which mean that as a party of 8 we could sit around, have a few drinks, chat and play cards. Have to say that for the price, there's not much you can really complain about.

In terms of the town itself, Bardonecchia is a town that services those coming from Turin for a day of skiing. It's not a party town (could be very VERY quiet at times), so bear that in mind if you're mad for the apres. People were friendly enough, and there's some great little places to eat and shop. there's two supermarkets - one only about 5 minutes stroll and the other is at the top of the town.

The skiing was very good. We managed to stay from the 2-9th March, and i was skiing with just a tshirt under my jacket at the end of the week. If you're looking for black runs, this probably isn't the resort for you. Campo smith has a lot of skiing, and it's good to break it up with trips up to Jeffereau where there's some steeper runs. There's a shuttle bus that you can take from Campo to Jeffereau in the car park for free. We did the one day Crystal option of heading to Montgenevre which was a great day of skiing. Lifts are jammers at the weekend, but very quiet otherwise. Lots of lovely places to eat on the slopes (we loved Chesal and did an evening meal up there). Also, go for a Bombardino (not at Chesal though) on the top of run 50 - great spot and you need it after a long drag lift.

If you're looking for a place to eat in town (just to experience it), we had a great meal at Ristorante Pizzeria I Cusine in the town. VERY reasonable prices, incredibly delicious food and great staff. A lot of regional specialties, but exceptional cooking and lovely presentation. €20-25pp with shared starters, a main and wine.

Overall we had a fantastic time. Great value ski trip. Thank you Michaela for your generous pours and lovely smile each evening. I'm already missing my happy hour(s) of prosecco!

Just back from a ski trip to Bardonecchia. We stayed in this friendly hotel in the centre of the town, a short walk from the main shopping area and a 15 minute walk to Campo Smith skiing resort. The free bus is handy if you don't feel like walking to the resort. The staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms were small, but clean.
As mentioned in other posts, the Wi-Fi was very intermittent in the public areas and non existent in the rooms.
Booked via Crystal Ski and we got a very reasonable deal, full board and this included a pack lunch, which consisted of a ham roll, a cheese roll, an apple, a bottle of water & and chocolate bar.
Would recommend this as an ideal location for a skiing holiday.
On the last night there was a local festival, the merriment carried on late into the following morning.

For a 3 star hotel this is really great.
The hotel is well run, the staff are very friendly and helpful. Our room was fairly basic but clean, comfortable and had plenty of storage space; the bathroom was big with a powerful shower and loads of hot water, there's a hair dryer too. The public areas have wifi, are light and airey with comfy chairs and several card tables in the lounge, the bar is well stocked and serves hot drinks all day.
Breakfast was the usual continental buffet with juices, yogurt, fruit, cold meats and cheese, hard boiled eggs, cereals, croissants etc. Dinner menus were put out at breakfast for you to choose what you wanted that evening which saves waste. The 4 course dinner - salad buffet (excellent), followed by a choice of a pasta dish, soup or something else like risotto then a choice of a meat, fish or veggie dish and finishing with a dessert - usually a cake made in the hotel or ice cream, was good but did become a bit repetetive. However, there are several very good and very reasonable pizzerias just around the corner for a change.
There's a heated ski room in the basement and the free ski buses to the three ski areas stop right outside the hotel.
The hotel is Ideally located for a walk into the main street of this small town and is only 100m from the train station.
We would certainly go back there.

Given the cheapness of the inclusive deal, lack of reviews and dodgy brochure photos I didn't have high expectations for this hotel
Room was small and basic but clean and had a fresh coat of paint. Was short of plug points and shower curtain could do with being changed but acceptable. We had access to wifi though not strong.
Breakfast was a typical continental affair but enough choice and fresh croissants and cakes made it pleasant.
Packed lunch was 2 rolls, 1 cheese and a ham one both generously filled. Apple or orange. Cereal bar and a bottle of water.
Dinner started with a buffet which included pizza slices, salad, veg sides bread and some various antipasti. Followed by a choice of a pasta/risotto/soup. Then a fish/meat/veggie main. Followed by a couple of deserts. Food was always of a good standard with appealing choices. Service was fast and friendly.
The drinks package included red/white wine, beer, prosecco, irish cream, limoncello, vodka, gin, pop, tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Decent wifi in the bar.
We hired skis from Rent and go, cheaper to arrange directly than to do it by Crystal. We also got a ski locker which was 28e but if we had realised how good the bus service was we wouldn't of bothered. Never waited more than 3 minutes for a bus and they are free. Ski passes are cheaper directly as well however for some strange reason you can't get a 6 day from the office on the slopes but need to go to the office around the corner from the hotel opposite the train station.

Stayed here for a weeks skiing. Very good location, 15 minute walk to campo smith ski area or hop on the free bus that stops right outside the hotel. Also free bus to jafferau ski area, both very frequent. Main Street is just around the corner and train station 2 min walk. Direct train to Turin for a day trip £24 return for 2 adults, frequent trains and plenty of seats takes approx 1 1\2 hr. Our room was fine, quite warm, clean with plenty of hot water and we had a balcony that became a sun trap in the afternoon with 2 chairs to enjoy this. Wi if was a bit hit and miss, great in our room for first 2 days then could not get online for the remainder of the week. Able to connect in the lounge area but sometimes had to ask reception to reboot router. As mentioned in another review the lounge sofas are rather tired but with free drinks from 5-10 pm for crystal and neilson guests it turned out to be a lovely social room. Breakfast is from 7-9.30 standard skiing hotel fayre. Dinner is from 7.30-9.00 pm, differs from other skiing hotels we have stayed in that you do sit at the same table each day but you don't share it with other guests. You chose your starter and main course at breakfast. Self serve buffet to begin which is varied and plentiful. Just a heads up if you are vegetarian some dishes that sound veggie aren't! I chose vegetable strudel one evening but it had ham in. The waiter did replace it but it was just with chopped cold boiled egg and sliced tomatoes. The starter one evening was mushroom soup but it was obviously made with meat stock as it had little bones in it, another main course was a variety of cheeses very tasty but a bit strange. Other evenings the veggie food was nice, omelette and cheese soufflé just expect the unexpected! Having said all that you won't go hungry, my non veggie husband ate very well. We would definitely return to this resort and this hotel.
