“Elegant BUT...”
Reviewed 13 March 2008

This was an "interesting" experience. This is supposedly a 4* hotel but our room was small, the dining room was ornate but also overrated and worst......the morning manager didn't have the sense to berate one of the maids away from the front desk and customers (us!) sitting there. The community is fascinating. We would go back but we definitely would not stay at this place. Someone needs to teach them about customer service and common decent treatment of employees.

This family run hotel started life many years ago as a truck stop. The patron was a truck driver and his wife worried constantly that he was not getting proper food when he was away from home, along with all the other poor truckers. He got so fed up with this constant chatter that he told her to open the doors to the farm as a truck stop if it made her happy. By the time he got back from an extended trip the word had spread and the rest was/is history. The hotel is still in the same family and mama still makes sure that everything is taken care of especially the kitchen and menues. Al Camin (The Fireplace) is noted as one of the finest restaurants in the Veneto and one of her sons runs it admirably. A second son runs the desk and the daughter runs the office and marketing. There is a third son but apart from enjoying himself we haven@t quite figured out what he does other than float about helping here and there. Mama is a delight and so is the barman Dario who always but always wears a tuxedo on duty. When you see him greet him warmly and tell him he looks @fantastico@.(He speaks perfect English having worked in London for many years). This hotel is perfect for many reasons and not the least if you want to visit Marostica for the bi-annual Chaess Game then this is the perfect base. All the bedrooms are clean, if a little dated/quirky and the staff are all very helpful and charming. It is not a stuffy hotel and the staff are not obsequious. They are family. We have been staying there at least twice a year for the past 12 years and after having tried every other hotel in the district we know it is the place to be.John Hyde.Brighton.England.

This was truly an awful hotel and we were led astray by hotels.com which gave it 4 stars and even the red Michelin guide which was complimentary. Don't be tempted by the super low rates US $114 or less- we were literally the only guests in the entire hotel- the only ones stupid enough to stay there.
Location: in Cassola which is to the S of Bassano del Grappa but is not really a separate town or even a suburb- more like a gritty, industrial, ugly part of Bassano. I was shocked by the continuous, nonstop urban and industrial development all the way from the Venice airport to Cassola/Bassano- forget about bucolic, rural Veneto.
The only attractive part of Bassano I saw was about a 5 block radius surrounding the famous bridge.
Rooms: serious flaws in every room. For example, non functioning wall attached bathroom hair dryers, our room had windows without drapes- only sheers- allowing glaring parking lot lights to shine into the room all night, shower stalls too small for anyone but a 5 y/o, old worn out furniture and carpeting- needed a renovation about 50 yrs ago.
Staff: youngsters on the evening shift tried to be helpful but were clueless. Older gentleman manning the desk during the day was cold, unfriendly and unhelpful.
Parking lot: awful, broken cement, weeds growing through cracks, unkempt appearance.
Public areas: these were kind of attractive and had a pleasant, warm, homey feel. Many locals seemed to dine at the restaurant within the hotel which might have been quite good but we were scared to try it after seeing the rooms. We had a very mediocre meal at a local osteria that had been touted by a well regarded Food Writer.
Breakfast was surprisingly delicious (extensive continental buffet and excellent espresso drinks).
I can't see the appeal of Bassano.
We escaped the next day and drove to Asolo, a stunning village not at all close by (on maps it appears to be about 20 mins away but the drive is very hilly and curvy with many interesting sights and can take several hrs with brief stops).
If you want to experience bucolic Veneto go directly to Asolo from points S, avoid Bassano altogether and stay at the fabulous Albergo al Sole. Tripadvisor lists it as being in the city of Treviso but it's actually in the village of Asolo which is at least 45 min away from Treviso. Albergo al Sole can also arrange a pick up by taxi from the Venice airport- no need to even rent a car.
