One of the most fascinating alpine passes I have driven in a car, now I just need to do it on a motorbike... Those who have been there know what it is like, others need to get there and experience it.

There are plenty of other alpine passes in the area, but this one has legendary status and doesn't disappoint. Recommend you drive it (at least) twice as the 2 sides of the mountain are very different, and steering round ascending hairpins is different from descending bends. Go early morning as I gather it gets busy from mid-morning and there are cyclists, motor-cyclists, car drivers and even trucks and buses to avoid.

We rented a BMW 1200rt so we could see different cities starting in Rome up to Stelvio Pass and then go back to Rome. We were really exited about getting there and after looking at pictures we knew it was going to be challenging. A few days earlier we rode to Cinque Terre and it was a lot of turns going up hill without being able to see who was coming out the curve so after we did Stelvio we felt going up to CT it was a lot more dangerous than SP. My husband was more concentrated on the turns so he only enjoyed the views when we stopped to admire the scenery. There were a lot of Ninja Bikes trying to go faster which was really annoying but overall it was a great experience!

Just loved the winding road. My only regret was that we only had a few hours to spend there. After a long way uphill, you'll find yourself on top of a mountain almost 3km above sea level....most probably you'll find snowy patches as well (as we did, although we were there at the beginning of September). The atmosphere at the top is very festive and there are breathtaking views and nice walks. A must!!!!!

Stunning scenery, unfortunately shared with a thousand cyclists on that particular day which made it very busy and slow going.
