“Surely one of the best roads in the world!”
Review of Stelvio Pass

Stelvio Pass
Ranked #1 of 31 things to do in Bormio

The first thing I have to say: this is an amazing road!

I left Bormio on a nice Sunday evening (pretty late, it was around 4-5 PM) and headed up for the Stelvio Pass. I had seen the road many times before on TV - basically every year during il Giro d'Italia. I started the climb in sun and ended up in snow at the top, at 2,757 m above the sea level.

The real experience doesn't compare to any pictures or videos. The road itself and the panoramic views are simply breathtaking. There was not much traffic, since it was pretty late. The endless hairpins are perfect and surely can challenge every driver in the world. There were many waterfalls during the climb, on the south side.

I highly recommend it! It offers spectacular views and it is a must do, if you are visiting the Italian Alps.

Best climb ever! This was one of my best biking experiences. Gorgeous, tough and amazing! We climbed from Bormio and from Prato. From Pratp is even more spectacular.

Negotiated the road up from the north side. The first hairpins are more difficult as they are surrounded by forests. The last section is awesome but the pass itself is tatty although a variety of food is available. Parked without problems overnight at the top €20 sees you to the top via the cable cars. A fantastic drive. Drive south hairy!!! Unlit tunnels with only room for traffic in one direction and no traffic management!!

The alps offer some of the most beautiful and thrilling mountains in the world. Stelvio is one of the best, if not the best. It is also rated as one of the 10 most dangerous roads in the world. But if you are a seasoned driver, no problem. Just take your time. We rode (on motorcycles) over 22 alpine passes this June(2014), and Stelvio was at the top in challenge, beauty and excitement. Simply incredible. Other passes that leave a long lasting impression are those in the vicinity of Andermatt, CHE.
