On my lightning trip to florence this summer. I had to go to a real gelateria. Had plenty of gelato's, but these were in cafe's. They say its artiginiale....but well. Not like having one in an oldschool gelateria in the evening when all the locals show up.
This place was recommended by the owner of the hotel i stayed at. Quite far away...so must be good. They also go there. my hotel was also in calenzano, but took about 12minute drive.
Well the gelato was very good...but not great.I have been kinda spoiled this way. Very old school.Classic tastes and style. The proprietors were both quite old. The taste that stood out was the nutella ice cream. Quite simply...vanilla ice cream along with pure nutella paste. The italians do love there Nutella...even though ice cold nutella is not that awesome...requires a bit of melting in your mouth. Was quite tasty.
Price quality is awesome. 1 euro you got a small cup with 2 tastes. What a great deal. And this was not even the cheapest on offer. Compared with holland its quite cheap. Anyway they have so many different stuff on offer...could have come a few times to give them all a try.
What I love here was the atmos[phere. The gelateria experence at these places in Italy...you see groups of friends, families come and get a cup of gelato and just relax outside on the terrace.
That's what we did. So relaxing and such a fitting end to a day in Italy.
So if you do end up staying in calenzano and you have a car handy...this place comes recommended,
When in rome and florence...it seems every few meters there is a gelateria. And everyone is great. But out in the suburbs and smaller towns...its much harder to find. You realy need to go out and find it.
When the food is good, life is good.
