Grand Hotel Elba International
Ranked #2 of 25 Hotels in Capoliveri
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 8 August 2013

We chose this hotel for its location and availability of rooms at the last minute in high season. There are definitely some pros and cons to consider before making a reservation.

Pro: The hotel staff were extremely nice and helpful - even before we arrived. A *great big thank you* to Nicholas who was in email contact with us and helped make our anniversary dinner extra special. They spoke English and French and were ready to help us with anything we needed. The restaurant staff was incredibly patient (with the demands of so many people in one location), worked extremely hard and were absolutely lovely. We enjoyed using our broken Italian with them.

Con: Checkout was very slow on the Sunday. Consider leaving before the 10am deadline. Often the two staff members were helping one person checkout which slowed the process quite a bit. And there were many hotel patrons who cut the line and the staff didn't take notice to redirect them to the back of the line.

Pro:
The hotel seemed to be the ideal location for families and small groups. There are activities for children (during the day and in the evening) as well as for the whole family. There is a beach which has plenty of chairs, a dock to jump off of and the kids area is separated from the more quiet section.

Con: The only issue is, we don't have kids, so if you're looking for a quiet, romantic getaway, this isn't really the best choice. We could hear children running up and down the hallways early in the morning and late at night and parents didn't seem to care they were disturbing the entire floor. Sound proofing was terrible.

Pro: The comfort on the beach was fantastic. The chairs were very comfortable and the sun hit the dock the entire day. There is a café but it closed for food service at 3pm. There's another smaller café below it that serves drinks and snacks. The water was clean and crystal clear. Absolutely no signs of jellyfish (as previously reported in another review).

Cons: the comfort of the bed in the room was nonexistent, I'm afraid. Monastery-hard mattress with equally hard pillows.

The terrace at the top of the hotel was practically unused which was where we took shelter from the noise of the groups and children. The views up there are spectacular and the seating was incredibly comfortable. A special thank you goes to the bar staff on the ground floor for bringing up champagne on a busy Saturday evening.

In conclusion, if you're traveling with kids, this is a good place to unwind and have everything available to you in one location. But if you're looking for a quiet romantic getaway, go for a smaller B&B elsewhere on the island.

Room Tip: Rooms without a view will have just that....no view (a hill, an AC unit, another building, etc.). Bu...

Reading the reviews for this hotel, I feel that some people have let the beauty of Elba cloud their judgment. While I would agree that location is an important part of the hotel's assessment, I believe that some strong negatives should be pointed out and carefully considered before making a reservation.

LOCATION. Let's start this review with the location. It is wonderful. Elba is a gem in the Mediterranean.

VIEW. One side of the hotel overlooks the beautiful Mediterranean sea. The view is magnificent. Rooms on this side of the hotel are significantly more expensive. If you choose a room on the other side, you will overlook a butte and the room can be kind of dark. However, you will be able to have the beautiful view form the terrace.

BUILDING. The building is pretty ugly. It looks like a time-share built in the 1970's. The best view you can have is from the top of the building since… you won't see the building ;)

SIZE. It is a big hotel and some guests may be uncomfortable with the feeling of mass tourism.

ROOMS. The rooms are pretty bare, in my taste. The bathroom is nice, though.

NOISE. Soundproofing is terrible. Bring your earplugs if you want to have a chance to sleep.

BEDS. The beds are awful. It feels like you are camping. In addition, the bed makes noise every single time you move. In a sense, the squeaking is not such a big problem since you have to use earplugs anyway.

CLEANNESS. The rooms and the premises are clean. Stains on the hallway carpeting call of for recarpeting, though.

BEACH. An elevator along the slide of the mountain gives an easy access to the hotel's beach. This is very nice. The water is clean and clear. Note that there a way better beaches at other locations of the island, especially the western part (as far as we could see by driving around the island). The hotel's beach faces north but a deck over the sea has been installed so the guests can enjoy the sun in the afternoon. There is a café but no waiter on the beach which can be considered as unusual by some of the patrons who are used to the private beaches.

PARKING. The parking lot is located 5-minutes away from the hotel (uphill). The hotel management did think it would be useful to put signs and does not provide a map... Beware the parking lot can be difficult to find. Since of the roads nearby are one-way, you have to go all the way around if you take the wrong road.

TELEPHONE. I hadn't seen such a phone since the 1980's. Probably one of the first touch tone phones on the market. We received a phone call while we were there: a lot of static on the line.

INTERNET. While the Internet is free, they make the authentication process unnecessarily complicated. You need a different code for each electronic device you own (smartphone, computer, etc). This code is only valid for five hours upon connecting and you need to reenter if you don't use the device for a while. Not very convenient and you can kiss your push notifications good bye. The Internet is very very slow and disappears once in a while so you have to go back to the authentication page. The unnecessarily complicated authentication process mentioned earlier becomes a real problem. Rule of thumb: when your Internet doesn't work well, don't try to be fancy!

STAFF. The young staff is very nice and helpful. The more senior staff doesn't seem to care much.

First impression is not great. The fasade of the hotel looks like something from the soviet-era, and the interiour is not much better. We had a junior suite with a sea view, which was as described. Nothing extraordinary about the room, but it provided our family of two adults and two children enough space etc. The bathroom was very spacious. The view from the balcony was breathtaking, and worth the extra bucks. The outdoor is great, with a huge swimmingpool, one smaller pool, and easy access to the hotel private beach. The staff was in generel very good (with two minor exceptions). Especially the restaurant staff was extremely attentive (a special thanks to Carmelo who took great care for us). The location was percefct for us, quiet, but yet just a short boattrip to the charming town of Porto Azurro. Even though the hotel really could use a makeover, our experience with Grand Hotel Elba International, was very good.

WARNING: JELLYFISH!!! JELLYFISH!!! JELLYFISH!!!
You might not be able to swim at this hotel's 'beach' due to the many red poisonous jellyfish in its waters. Firstly, there is NOT A REAL BEACH in this hotel, it is basically a DECK on top of the water. More importantly, on my first day I asked one of the lifeguards how long had the jellyfish been there 2/4 days? He answered 'many more than that!' and they were there on my last/fourth day as well. The lifeguards also stated that in the past years the frequency and the number of jellyfish have increased. So be aware.

ELBA IS VACATION WITH EFFORT...
In order to enjoy a beach (since the one I paid for was unswimmable), I drove to other beaches (supposedly free of jellyfish). Take note that the 'best' ones like Fetovaia and Marina del Campo can be quite far (30-45 mins) due to traffic in some points and winding roads. But then once I got to them I found out a few things :

1) There is very limited parking near these beaches so you either pay a hefty fee to park nearer the water (€10 in Fetovaia), or walk a good bit (25 minutes, or over 1km on hot hilly asfalt) since you'd have to leave your car far out (e.g. Cavoli beach), or arrive/wake up very early in your vacation...;

2) Once you get to the beach, they're often 'managed' and in most you cannot just put down your towel and get into the water. You have to 'reserve' a spot ( I had not) and which are often taken up in blocks by the closest hotels. I was in 'luck' at Fetovaia as there was one (for real) spot free for 'only' €23. The same thing happened in another beach only that someone took my spot between the time I spotted it and went to get my wallet in my car.

(Also note that there are these slimy algae at the bottom of the beaches in Elba that is not particularly pleasant to feel under your feet, lots of people wore swim shoes)

So beware, Elba is vacation with a lot of work, slimy algae and depending on where you are, jellyfish. Think twice before staying at this hotel. Look around.

Stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. The location is a bit off but the seaview is stunning. The hotellstaff is friendly and helpful, the rooms are clean but the interior is a bit un-modern. Nice poolarea, though with saltwater and the bicycles are accesible to borrow for free which is great for a ride to Porto Azzurro (Mountainbikes are OK for roaduse, no more). The breakfast is good (huge amount of biscuits, cakes, crossaints and so on, which we dont like) with yogurt, fresh fruits, bread, juice and different types of coffee included. Our dinnerexperience at the hotel was terrible. DONT EAT HERE. Poorly cooked, no taste, Everything very bad. There is a sidebuffet too, which is ok, but the meals to order are not good! There are good resturants in porto azzurro & capolievere (check on tripadvisor). The gym is very small and unmodern, 2 runningtrails (1 machine did not work), no Music and those few Machines there were, were old and unmodern. snacks and drinks are very expensive at the hotel, double price to other places. buy water at other stores. All in all, OK hotelexperience!

Excellent setting. The private platforms right on the water were superb. One can just lie down on one of the many lounge chairs and get down to a pristine clear water for a dip. The rooms in the hotel were clean and comfortable and the staff was nice and helpful. One can either eat in the hotel or, better still, go to Capoliveri for some fantastic meals.
