Swimming pool is very big.
Stunning view on the bay, very good location
Very good breakfast
Hotel beach is awful because it is small and crowded, we never used it. But they give kayaks, some entertainment

Dear mrs. Elena,

thank you very much for having given such a positive comment about our hotel. you are right, sometimes our private beach is a little crowded. in our view, this means that it is appreciated by our guests and.... the sun always shines on Elba! ;-)

Nicholas is the best! We went to Elba in August 2013 and had an amazing time. Make sure you go to Note Blue. The whole town dresses up in blue and parties all night! You can dine on Polpo and eat Gelotti all night long.

Room Tip: Waterview if you can get it

hotel: nice . not modern, but ok

room: spacious and clean. outstanding mattress, with stunning view on the sea by the balcony

position: lovely, very close to capoliveri , stunning view over the sea and the island

restaurant: food is excellent.
the 15th august they organized a special dinner and that was just in-cre-di-ble.
flexible meal , all good quality and excellent italian chefs.

staff: very flexible, professional and caring.

example of how much they care: we needed to inflate a giant turtle for the kid to use on the sea, they called the maintenance man that appeared with an enormous compressor and inflated it in matters of seconds.

one day we rented a motor boat and that gave the extra spice to our staying -we visited around and we felt very happy.

beach is ok, water is very clean and fishy.

GYM and SPA, we had no opportunity to go but seemed ok

Room Tip: take a sea view room it's worth!

Amazing location, stunning views (if you have a sea view room) private beach with free loungers, umbrellas and beach towels ( tip buy water in the supermarket otherwise you will pay €2 for a small bottle) Rooms and communal areas are very dated (think early 90's) but are very clean and in good condition. Breakfast is a buffet with loads of pastries, cereals, juices, fruit and hot food to help yourself to, coffee and espresso in particular are very good. Nice quiet roof terrace (though live music on a Tuesday and Sunday until midnight)
We had booked a sea view room but on arrival were upgraded to a junior suite. Room was large with a sofa and 2 chairs, bathroom was large and spotlessly clean with loads of free toiletries, bed was huge ( very hard which we liked but might not suit everyone)
We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening and instead walked down the hill (5min down, 10min up) and eat twice in Frank's - really lovely food and very economically priced.
Gym is also dated, it has 2 running machines, 1 bike, 1 cross trainer and a few random weights but to be honest you are better going a run/walk each morning as it is very very hilly.
In summary dated and they are still hanging onto old fashioned values of service and formality but location, beach, weather etc make it well worth while.
Internet can be very slow and you have to ask reception for an access code for each devise you have, the code will only last for 5 hours so you have to get a new one each day, however it's free!

Room Tip: Sea room is well worth the extra few pounds

We are just back from 19 super days in the Grand Hotel with our 10, 7 and 2 year olds. This is our first visit to Elba and we loved it.

The setting of this hotel is truly phenomenal. We had 2 interconnectin rooms with stunning views over the bay and pool - just gorgeous.

The outside of the hotel is very block-like and not very attractive but the set-up of the pool areas and the views really compensate for the not so attractive architecture.

The lift to the private beach area below was brilliant and the kids absolutely adored travelling in "The Elba Train" a few times a day.

The hotel had two wonderful girls Alesya and Nicole running the kids club where they had painting and arts and crafts in the morning from 10.30-12,30 at the beach area, then the children would have a superb 2 course lunch meal altogether at 12.45 and then at 4.30-6.30 there would be fun and water games up at the pool area. The two girls were fantastic and every single child adored them, as did we ! it's very relaxed, lots of fun and they all loved hanging out and swimming together - I think on the last 2 days, there were 27 children eating lunch together - some fun !!!!!

We went half-board which meant our children went full board. I cannot fault the quality or the selection as the menu changed every single day and we were there for 19 days, so that is some achievement for the hotel. Every evening, there was a very impressive buffet for the antipasti and then you would chose your prima piatti and then your secondi - lots of choice. I have to say the pasta chef was really excellent. The dessert was a very large buffet selection along with an ice-cream cart and cheese board. We have never gone down this route before and whilst the food was really excellent, I would suggest goign for a more comined approach and perhaps do a deal for so many nights in the hotel and then just head out yourselves. There is a super taxi boat service from the beach jetty below that brings you across to the porto azzurro marina which is absolutely gorgeous, very classy village with lots of lovely restaurants, so we agreed with the ever accomodating Manager Raffaele to do that on a number of evenings.

Our 2 daughters asked the reception could they organise something for our 13th wedding anniversary and the hotel sent prosecco up to the room and then 2 days later, the hotel gave me the lovely Aqua d'Elba birthday gift for me on the 6th August. Both gestures were both hugely appreciated.

The rooftop bar is open a few evenings and that's really lovely and most people retire to the restaurant level terrace after dinner which was also very nice. The main restaurant is very big and bright so probably suits the family sector rather than the couples. having said all that, the hotel was full of young couples too.

We had a ball. Thank you Raffaele, Alesya, Nicole, Francesca and so many many more of your lovely staff that really looked after us and our 3 children

Room Tip: We had 2 interconnecrting rooms on the 3rd floor - amazing views

We chose this hotel for its location and availability of rooms at the last minute in high season. There are definitely some pros and cons to consider before making a reservation.

Pro: The hotel staff were extremely nice and helpful - even before we arrived. A *great big thank you* to Nicholas who was in email contact with us and helped make our anniversary dinner extra special. They spoke English and French and were ready to help us with anything we needed. The restaurant staff was incredibly patient (with the demands of so many people in one location), worked extremely hard and were absolutely lovely. We enjoyed using our broken Italian with them.

Con: Checkout was very slow on the Sunday. Consider leaving before the 10am deadline. Often the two staff members were helping one person checkout which slowed the process quite a bit. And there were many hotel patrons who cut the line and the staff didn't take notice to redirect them to the back of the line.

Pro:
The hotel seemed to be the ideal location for families and small groups. There are activities for children (during the day and in the evening) as well as for the whole family. There is a beach which has plenty of chairs, a dock to jump off of and the kids area is separated from the more quiet section.

Con: The only issue is, we don't have kids, so if you're looking for a quiet, romantic getaway, this isn't really the best choice. We could hear children running up and down the hallways early in the morning and late at night and parents didn't seem to care they were disturbing the entire floor. Sound proofing was terrible.

Pro: The comfort on the beach was fantastic. The chairs were very comfortable and the sun hit the dock the entire day. There is a café but it closed for food service at 3pm. There's another smaller café below it that serves drinks and snacks. The water was clean and crystal clear. Absolutely no signs of jellyfish (as previously reported in another review).

Cons: the comfort of the bed in the room was nonexistent, I'm afraid. Monastery-hard mattress with equally hard pillows.

The terrace at the top of the hotel was practically unused which was where we took shelter from the noise of the groups and children. The views up there are spectacular and the seating was incredibly comfortable. A special thank you goes to the bar staff on the ground floor for bringing up champagne on a busy Saturday evening.

In conclusion, if you're traveling with kids, this is a good place to unwind and have everything available to you in one location. But if you're looking for a quiet romantic getaway, go for a smaller B&B elsewhere on the island.

Room Tip: Rooms without a view will have just that....no view (a hill, an AC unit, another building, etc.). Bu...

Reading the reviews for this hotel, I feel that some people have let the beauty of Elba cloud their judgment. While I would agree that location is an important part of the hotel's assessment, I believe that some strong negatives should be pointed out and carefully considered before making a reservation.

LOCATION. Let's start this review with the location. It is wonderful. Elba is a gem in the Mediterranean.

VIEW. One side of the hotel overlooks the beautiful Mediterranean sea. The view is magnificent. Rooms on this side of the hotel are significantly more expensive. If you choose a room on the other side, you will overlook a butte and the room can be kind of dark. However, you will be able to have the beautiful view form the terrace.

BUILDING. The building is pretty ugly. It looks like a time-share built in the 1970's. The best view you can have is from the top of the building since… you won't see the building ;)

SIZE. It is a big hotel and some guests may be uncomfortable with the feeling of mass tourism.

ROOMS. The rooms are pretty bare, in my taste. The bathroom is nice, though.

NOISE. Soundproofing is terrible. Bring your earplugs if you want to have a chance to sleep.

BEDS. The beds are awful. It feels like you are camping. In addition, the bed makes noise every single time you move. In a sense, the squeaking is not such a big problem since you have to use earplugs anyway.

CLEANNESS. The rooms and the premises are clean. Stains on the hallway carpeting call of for recarpeting, though.

BEACH. An elevator along the slide of the mountain gives an easy access to the hotel's beach. This is very nice. The water is clean and clear. Note that there a way better beaches at other locations of the island, especially the western part (as far as we could see by driving around the island). The hotel's beach faces north but a deck over the sea has been installed so the guests can enjoy the sun in the afternoon. There is a café but no waiter on the beach which can be considered as unusual by some of the patrons who are used to the private beaches.

PARKING. The parking lot is located 5-minutes away from the hotel (uphill). The hotel management did think it would be useful to put signs and does not provide a map... Beware the parking lot can be difficult to find. Since of the roads nearby are one-way, you have to go all the way around if you take the wrong road.

TELEPHONE. I hadn't seen such a phone since the 1980's. Probably one of the first touch tone phones on the market. We received a phone call while we were there: a lot of static on the line.

INTERNET. While the Internet is free, they make the authentication process unnecessarily complicated. You need a different code for each electronic device you own (smartphone, computer, etc). This code is only valid for five hours upon connecting and you need to reenter if you don't use the device for a while. Not very convenient and you can kiss your push notifications good bye. The Internet is very very slow and disappears once in a while so you have to go back to the authentication page. The unnecessarily complicated authentication process mentioned earlier becomes a real problem. Rule of thumb: when your Internet doesn't work well, don't try to be fancy!

STAFF. The young staff is very nice and helpful. The more senior staff doesn't seem to care much.
