Thank you Franca and your friendly staff for making me feel so welcome and offering every assistance when needed. The food was second to none, you put your heart in every dish served the best of Italy. The photos on your web-site don't do justice, but then I think, you just have to visit as it's the place to be and see. Thanks again Franca for the many little things you did to make my stay so enjoyable I wished I could have stayed longer........I plan to return. My very best wishes to everyone. Julia.

Room Tip: Travelling alone - Franca would be the friend you might need for advise.

Great find in this lovely medieval hilltown
- Location at the edge of the hill, easy to walk around the town from here
- Large room with terrace, great view down the plain and the sea
- Breakfast that left nothing to be desired. Mozzarella & tomato, cheese, ham, meats, fruits, strawberries, bread and croissant, omelette.. Simply the best breakfast we had in two weeks Italy
- Easy parking space next to the hotel (hard to find in Italy's historical city centres)

What can I say? It's tempting not to review this little gem and so keep it a secret to only those who have already discovered it. But that would be unfair. My wife and I first stayed at Il Castello in 2003 and this year returned with our little daughter who loved Castellabate just as much as we have done on both our visits.

Not to be confused with the beach town of Santa Maria di Castellabate below, Castellabate is an enchanting medieval hilltop village. When you reach the village of Castellabate after a steep twisty climb, look out for the stautue of Our Lady on your right. Take the very sharp turn left just before the statue and this will bring you to the parking area next to the hotel.

Castellabate is especially magical at night navigating its winding cobbled laneways and steps. The lovely little nearby piazza was the setting for the 2010 film 'Benvenuti al Sud'. Albergo Il Castello is a very homely accommodation and the very attentive and friendly owner Franca and her lovely staff contribute to this experience in no small way. I can vouch for previous reviews regarding the hearty breakfasts - a refreshing change from the more usual Italian fare of coffee and croissant. You are assured of a very pleasant and comforable stay in this very homely hotel in beautiful Castellabate.

My husband and I stayed at Albergo Il Castello in the last week of May 2011. We've just come back home and are still talking about how much we miss being there! Upon arriving in Castellabate we were greeted by Franca (the owner) who, after showing us to our room, offered us an unexpectedly delicious lunch, freshly prepared within minutes! It was a lovely, warm welcome and got the holiday off to an excellent start, as we relaxed sipping red wine and eating a generous lunch in the garden after a weary morning of travelling from the UK!

The rooms at the hotel are fairly basic, being decorated in traditional Italian style with 1950's style vintage furniture, with some black & white photos on the walls of Castellabate in years gone by - which adds to the homely feel. Our room was spacious, comfortable and clean, and had all the furniture you needed: (a large double bed, wardrobe, dressing table, full length mirror, bedside tables and fridge). The adjoining bathroom was like a wetroom (with the shower in the corner but no screen / curtain), and a wc, bidet and sink. It was probably more dated looking than the rest of the room, but everything worked. There was no air-con but we didn't actually need it as it wasn't very hot in May, and I imagine that you could airiate the room well enough just by keeping the sun terrace doors open if the weather was hot.

The bedroom opened up onto a large sun terrace, which offered excellent views of Santa Maria and San Marco beach resorts at the foot of the hill. Castellabate is at the top of a large hill, so the hotel is well placed for taking advantage of these fantastic views, being close to the castle at the summit of the hill. There was a table with two chairs and also two sun loungers, so we were able to sit outside on warmer days as the sun was setting and watch the views from our sun terrace (and use the spare chairs for drying any wet clothes from days spent at the beach etc.)

The service provided by Franca and her team is excellent. We felt really well looked after during our stay. There is a very homely feel about the place, with the staff greeting you with a jolly 'Buongiorno!' every morning at breakfast. I felt instantly at home because of Pepe the black cat (a pet) who liked to wander past every so oftens in the garden and sit nearby for company. We ate breakfast each day in the garden, which is very pretty and sheltered from sun and wind. The breakfasts served were amazing! A buffet was laid out consisting of: cake (different every day); locally produced buffalo mozarella; tomatoes; yoghurt; meats; cheeses; granola, strawberries; and a selection of whole fruits. A basket of bread and croissant was brought to your table and a freshly cooked omelette, and whatever hot drink you wanted. We also tasted their homemade jams (fig, kiwi and marmalade!) which was another treat. The breakfasts were so generous that we often left the table feeling so full we couldn't possibly eat again until late afternoon!

We also chose to dine at the hotel for 2 nights out of our 7 night stay. We ate at a few different restaurants in Castellabate and after a recommendation from another guest staying at Albergo Il Castello, we asked to eat with Franca to sample the evening meals there. Franca's kitchen staff (and Franca herself) cooked us some amazing Italian food that was far better than that served in the restaurants we'd been eating in at Castellabate. Her food is cooked with love and gave us the real experience of Italian home cooking. A gastronomical delight! We ate such things as: homemade pasta; shark steak; bruschetta; pear & grappa tart and huge king prawns. We also had some of their homemade limoncello as a nightcap!

All in all, Albergo Il Castello is in a great spot for exploring Castellabate. Franca is a very welcoming host and the food served at breakfast and dinner was superb. I think the hotel would appeal to people looking for an authentic Italian experience, away from the madding crowds and somewhere that feels like a home from home. The clientele is mixed, with some Australians and Germans staying there whilst we were visiting, so it isn't a typical resort full of British by any means! Franca speaks excellent English but you are definitely immersed in Italian culture here - which isn't a bad thing, as you might even learn some Italian words whilst staying there, as we did.

In terms of the location of the hotel, it borders with a piazza on one side, where you can park your car. It is also a 2 minute walk away (through the main door and via a little passageway) to another piazza with a restaurant (Il Divino) and small cafe bar. Other restaurants that are a 5 minute walk away that we tried and would recommend are: Belvedere and Il Caicco. So you have a choice of a handful of restaurants that are a short walk away in the evening. I think there are more to choose from if you don't mind a longer walk downhill or want to take the car. Castellabate is definitely a place where you need a car. We probably wouldn't have managed without one.

We would definitely recommend staying at Albergo Il Castello again and hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Albergo Il Castello and its hostess, Franca.

Castellabate is an atmospheric, medieval hilltop village with quaint alleys and fantastic views of the surrounding landscape.

Situated within Castellabate, the Albergo Il Castello has wonderful, courtyard gardens offering a fantastic vantage point over the rural Italian landscape. The perfect place to take breakfast, as I did. Breakfast is very generous with a wonderful selection of dishes.

Rooms are very comfortable and have a tranquil character.

Franca is a very warm and friendly hostess who speaks excellent English.

If you are looking for a 5 star luxury hotel this is not the place. If you are looking for a comfortable and homely place to stay, with a colourful, warm and genuine atmosphere that is slightly off the beaten track, then this is it.

I'd go back any time.

My partner and I stayed with Franca in August 2010, which is usually a time in Europe when travel is best avoided. Castellabate, however, is a wonderful atmospheric hilltop town that proved to be a great choice - close enough to the beach (10 minute drive) with all the benefits without the downsides of being swamped by sunseekers.

We ended up eating at Franca's 2 out of the 3 nights we stayed and as avid foodies and Italianophiles, we can vouch that Franca's cooking was some of the best we've sampled - cooked expertly with a graciousness and generosity that made it all the more special. Thank you, Franca.

the Albergo is located in the pittoresk village of Castellabate, on top of a mountain. Magnificient view from our room, we watched the sunset every day. Signora Franca made us feel at home immediately. Her home cooking of local dishes accompanied by local wines is really fantastic. Close to the sea, only a short drive down hill, this all made our stay unforgettable.
Many thanks to Signora Franca and her crew.
