“The sweet life”
Reviewed 11 September 2010

All you read is true. For those who enjoy something off the beaten track, a little worn around the edges but filled with warmth, eccentricity and a love of life I'd recommend this as a delightful place to stay.

Ask for a room on the top floor overlooking the valley. It is a little more expensive but certainly worth the money.

Franca, was a wonderful host, welcoming us with a carafe of wine and figs from the tree that grows in over the terrace of restaurant downstairs. Later that evening she cooked for us. An extraordinary meal, which included fettucine covered in a sauce made from mushrooms picked from the forest, "the first of the season" as she said.

The town itself is the picture book medieval, hill top Italian villa. A labyrinth of tiny lanes and steps that tumbles down the hill to the extraordinary Cilento coast. Make sure you have dinner in the restaurant just below the town's fort. Touristico certainly, but with views to die for, and very very good food (as is all the food in the area).

We have just returned from a week at this hotel, chosen from Tripadvisor. Franca, the owner, is a kind and attentive host [she speaks excellent english] and is a wonderful cook. Her evening meals, served on the terrace, are freshly cooked and delicious, and also very reasonably priced. The room was simple and clean, with an outside terrace with a beautiful view. Although there was no a/c the ceiling fan was efficient and we felt it was good value. Without exception the staff at the albergo were pleasant and friendly and we enjoyed our very relaxing stay so much.
Castellabate is charming and very quiet, and has two or three restaurants, though nothing to beat Franca's cooking. I think it would be difficult to stay there without a car. We had a very small one to go up and down the hill, and Franca organised a transfer from Naples airport with Franco Nigri from Antares 91, who was very reliable and a safe driver.

We had a wonderful three night stay at Albergo Il Castello in the lovely hilltop town of Castellabate . The rooms were very comfortable and the spacious attached terraces allowed wonderful views. Breakfast was taken in the delightful garden and was always delicious. I would recommend eating there in the evening as well as the food was terrific and very good value. The hostess, Franca, is gracious and elegant and very helpful and knowledgable about the area. This is a hidden gem and very much worth a stop if you're passing through or are in the area.

If you enjoy food of the highest standard, dishes made from the freshest ingredients and served in generous portions you will never be able to find a better place than this.
Franca runs a truly unique establishment in the little hill-top village of Castellabate. It is characterful rather than luxurious but every need and every request is immediately and efficiently dealt with - nothing is too much trouble. We left with a litre of the local olive oil carefully decanted into a plastic water-bottle! I'm so glad we resisted booking one of those anonymous expensive hotels on the coast - this is a real Italian experience and definitely not to be missed.

Franca welcomed us while a crate of fresh funghi porcini was being delivered by the contadino who collected them. And some black truffles too! So that settled the question where we would have dinner on our first night. And all following nights for that matter! Her brother Enzo helped us graciously carrying our luggage to our spacious room. Great view from the wide arcaded balcony on the hilly landscape and on the well-shaded patio below. Fresh air galore and no need for airconditioning! Having come from Rome, where we reside, the best thing was the silence and clean air. Utter silence. Fresh air. As a welcome gift after the copious meal and sampling several local wines we were feasted with a tango night at the piazza of the medieval borgo. Quite a spectacle! Breakfast in Italy is usually a cigarette, a quick coffee and possibly a murmured 'ciao', but this custom was replaced at Franca's place with a smile, a welcoming booming 'buon giorno' courtesy of Enzo's, cornetti the size of a dinner plate, fresh seasonal fruits (e.g. black sweet cherries, apricots from her garden, peaches, melon), the best mozzarella da buffala from the Campania Region, tomatoes with fresh basil, home made marmalades, yoghurt, and a freshly baked cake! And all the coffee or tea you ever wanted! This was the main reason we arrived late at the beach of Santa Maria C. where Alfredo of the Aloha Beach neatly pulled out our deckchairs and unfolded the umbrella. No blaring music, clean ' blue ribbon' award winning beaches, absolutely clear transparent warm water, little if any waves, in short a kid's paradise - and for (grand) parents too-, lovely little twin towns, winding country roads, beautiful forests and walks in the hills, etc. We rented a 40 HP boat (no permit required) and for a full day hopped along the coast and islets. You could see forever to the bottom, clear, aquamarine, yellows, red, green, all colors to put us at ease. Being at sea raises ones appetite and Franca, Enzo, Pina and Paula catered to us (and the other guests whom we by now had joined for our evening meals) as if entering a world championship for chefs! Conversation with and between guests was in English and Italian striking up friendships during the evenings spent together on the patio under the massive branches of the two century old fig trees. And for an encore, Enzo with his massive champion boxer's fists, unlocked sweet tunes from the piano!

All in all, we were very happy to have been Franca's guests and hope to return soon after the season.

We stayed at the Albergo il Castello this past June and very much enjoyed it, mainly because Franca, the proprietess, is a wonderful hostess and a fabulous cook. The casual, homestyle 10-course meals that she and her small staff served up every evening on the garden patio were among the highlights of our entire trip, and an excellent introduction to the delicious food of the Campania region. From the zucchini blossoms stuffed with mozzarella di bufala to the local seafood, everything was amazing, and the prices were very reasonable considering the size of the feast. The breakfast buffet was also lovely, with fresh homemade cakes, ricotta di bufala and other local specialties. The only thing that was less than spectacular were the wines served with the meal - inexpensive local plonk that was drinkable but a bit of a disappointment for anyone looking to explore the great wines of Italy.

Albergo di Castello is definitely a choice destination for chowhound-type travelers looking for great food in an authentic, less touristy setting. Castellabate is located on a mountaintop about 4km from the resort town of Santa Maria di Castellabate, and the views from our terrace were lovely. There are a few downsides, however - the bathrooms were a bit on the primitive side, though clean and well kept; the bus to the beach takes about half an hour and is definitely not that convenient; the town is historic but a bit too quiet (though many might see that as a plus); and the lack of air conditioning was quite stifling in the June heat, and leaving the windows open at night was not an option due to the bugs, which those needing AC to sleep well would definitely want to factor in. But, overall, a charming place in a part of Italy that is well worth exploring.

This is a lovely B&B type place. It is not a hotel. The lady who runs it is very nice and helpful. The food is amazing (she cooked for us for 50 Euros for two people with wine a 4-course meal).
The view from our room was great. The village is beautiful.

But the rooms and bathrooms are a little dated. Plus there is no A/C so if you go in the summer, make sure you can tolerate the heat because we couldn't and it made our stay unpleasant.
