“Super super toscan”

Castellare di Castellina Winery

I sodi di San Nicolo, one of the best wines you will ever taste. Rich, powerful yet elegant, drink a sip and you ll want to have your cellar full of it. Very good chianti and surprising white wine.

We were driving up from Siena to San Gimignano and wanted to visit a winery. By pure chance we ended up in this castello. It is not a castle anymore but an ultramodern winery. The architecture is spectacular and very modern. It has the same appearance as Opus One in California. The tour is very good and impressive. I reallyliked the whole set-up. During our wine tasting the 90 year old owner showed up adding to the whole experience. It is not the standard Toscan set-up but was therefore, the more interesting. The design and set-up was done by one of the daughters of the Mazzei family (the owners since the 15th century). The wine selection is very good. I would really recommend it.

Castellare makes great wine. We enjoyed the opportunity to visit the winery and see where the grapes are grown and the wine made. The tour was great, the property is very beautiful. Our guide was knowledgable and friendly. The wine tasting was fun and allowed us to sample a wine we'd never find in the United States. Overall a fun afternoon.

Castellare di Castellina was our first stop of the day after starting out on an adventerous drive through the heart of Tuscany. Unfortunately, we had not set-up an appointment for a tour or anything of the like prior - we just happened to stop in unannounced. The associate working in the tasting room was apologetic that without an appointment we would be unable to have a tour, however, she did offer us a tasting and was very knowledgeable, not to mention passionate, about their property and produc (note: she spoke English very well)t! Upon leaving, we realized that we were not charged, and not knowing if tipping was appropriate, we turned around and bought a bottle of vino to share over lunch.

Castellare di Castellina has some of the best chianti classico we tasted over the three days we spent on the winding roads of Tuscany. If we ever find ourselves back in this locale, we will definitely visit again and arrange a tour to see more of the property. CHEERS!

Today we decided to visit the winery and sample the local brew, even though this meant walking approximately 2 km on a road that was more up than down but it was so worth it. The tour guide was not only informative, speaking excellent English but was also very passionate about the winery and her role within it. The wines that we tasted definitely made the walk worth while, especially the Castellare Di Castellina Chianti Classico, which was probably the best I've ever tasted, hence we bought several bottles. The tour, at 14€ is well worth a visit.
