“AMERICAN TRAP”
Reviewed 20 September 2011

STRUCTURE: grand palace overlooking the lake, soft colors of the facade, some rooms in the main building, others in private villas on the lake, within a well-kept garden.
LOBBYING: setting with high ceilings with uniformed personnel ready to welcome you.
ROOMS: sad, dark, dark, with no particular value, very basic furniture such as a three star hotel, view from the room on fire-fighting stairs, marble bathroom with hair previous clients, all stained with dirt and mold in the corners. Corridors to the rooms style cruise ship, the only particularly valuable corridors of fire extinguishers, fire fighting, then nothing else you can imagine.
RESTAURANT: a cafeteria, people coming and going is people, waiters rush between tables, poor quality of every dish, impersonal, for parties, banquets and business meetings. Restaurant in the pool like eating on the beach in a bath of Riccione.
SWIMMING: small pool on the lake without any type of service, cold water.
PERSONAL: all employees are in uniform, prepared to welcome American tourists trying to squeeze tips at full blast. The manager really annoying, want to be right on everything and does not listen to customers who may have more experience than he in the hospitality industry, as can be seen from the answers on tripadvisor, I inspected the 'Hotel three times within three years and no improvement has never been made nor any Board of dissatisfied customers was never put into practice.
OVERALL: Potentially a five-star, but would have to close for at least two years and make a general restyling of all the rooms and restaurant. And thus be ready to receive all types of clientele from all over the world and not only customers from the covers of newspapers (those are always satisfied)

We arranged to have lunch on the terrace at the Villa d'Este on a recent trip. What a wonderful experience it was! I had reserved a table in advance and they gave us a table for four right along the veranda wall overlooking Lake Como. The service could not have been more gracious, warm and professional. The food was world class. We wandered around the lobby and the gardens and were made to feel every bit "the guest" in our few hours at this one of a kind property.

I have known the existence, reputation, luxury and celebrities ambience of this hotel for more than thirty years but my wife and I stayed here last month for the first time. I feared, not a bit, of the lateness in visiting as the world and the people have changed so much that the ambience expected here could have been disapproved. Another fear was if we could really expect premium value compared with other five starred hotels in Italy such as San Michele Fiesole, Certosa Di Maggiano Siena, San Pietro and La Sirenuse Positano, as indeed this hotel charges about 60% premium. Overall our fear became of realty. The surrounding scenes, the lake and the classic gardens and villas did not improve our impressions as probably we lived too long and have seen far too many beauties of the world. As we usually do we reserved a junior suite and here with a lake view. The room was smaller than expected like a usual deluxe double room. It was neat, well decorated and had a couple of small balconies viewing the lake and the hotel’s main building, and coincidentally festive fire works right in front of us. We approved it but in the middle of the night I went into bath room and, when I switched on the light, heard a shout from my wife because it lit the big chandelier above the bed as well. Later she went to bath room and did the same. Consequently we became unable to sleep at all and at 6 o’clock I called a night porter but he agreed with me the lightening system was erroneously fitted and he promised only to ask an engineer to correct it later. The female receptionist who looked after us suggested to move to another room which was fine. But, my wife taking siesta was awakened by thunder like noise from an adjacent room. I had to complain it to the receptionist who in turn brought General Manager to apologize (or excuse as it was an emergency work to stop water leakage while they could have asked us if we would like to take siesta in a remote room) We have not asked but they offered compensation discount of a half day charge and a cook book. These incidents were unfortunate to the hotel, but, admitting that the receptionist helped us most sincerely for which we thank her, we could have enjoyed our stay much better if the risk had been managed better. We were disappointed to find many children as well as some group tourists and thought wearing jacket and tie for dinner at La Terrazza quite inappropriate. Why should they not exclude this code for summer and outdoor, we wondered. The inside dining room used for breakfast is beautifully decorated looking through large crystal clear glass windows to the classic garden and most appropriate for dining with lounge suit. La Grill on a terrace a little away from the lake and the main building is a nice restaurant. Waiters were more friendly and talkative with the quality of the foods not different from those at La Terrazza. From the hotel it is easy to walk to Cernobbio town and pier for water bus cruising for watching beautiful landscapes all around the lake. It gave us exclusively good experiences adding to our memory list of five stars hotels of Europe. Finally I should add that today there is no paradise in the world. Veteran Traveller

The Villa D'Este delivers all that you expect a five star hotel should. The views of Lake Como are unbeatable. The staff is very helpful and friendly and the rooms are beautiful. A few little complaints - shower pressure not very good; water leaking in our mini fridge and the prices at the pool side cabana for a casual lunch were enough to annoy even the least spend conscious ($50 for chicken nuggets is just absurd!). The bed was fine but I've definitely slept in better. Overall, it was still worth the huge price tag to us for the great experience.

As part of a drive through Europe we saw this as a must to see the amazing setting on Lake Como and the beautiful buildings. We arrived for just one night tired after 10 hours driving on minor roads across the Austrian and Italian Alps. Very efficient staff unloaded the bags needed and whisked away my car. We had ordered a standard room (Euro 690 inc breakfast) but this was to a very high standard. My tie was buried in another bag with the car so could not use the main restaurant as a dress code applies and I was not prepared to find the car or borrow a tie; frankly why a tie is needed for an outside terrace restaurant beats me, but so be it. We dined in the bistro terrace and had a perfectly good dinner for Euro 146 including wine and had a few other drinks on the main terrace. This is a wonderful setting in a classic former palace. A delight to see.

We spent 3 nights there with children who loved the kids club (only open in the summer), the gardens and the kids pool. Would recommend eating in the main restaurant for one night but there are plenty of good quality more sensibly priced retaurants in the town. Try IL GIARDINO on the main street for example. Extras in the hotel such as a coke or a sandwich are hideously expensive. Breakfast is amazing. Staff and service superb. Will definitely be back.

Everything previously said on here is correct and I found myself amazed when it happened to us too, empty restaurant, this table is reserved despite nobody sitting there all lunchtime, concierge recommending we go to the Grill restaurant rather than the best one Veranda (which didnt bother us as my husband did not take a jacket and a tie) and going to the pool at 9.30 when it opens to be told by staff those beds are reserved despite nobody sitting there all day. The pool is freezing and how they say it is heated I will never know. Had a tinned tuna salad for 30 euro at the swimming pool cafe and found a hair in it, my daughter ordered burger and chips and they forgot the burger and the chef dropped the pizza when taking it out of the oven so we had to wait whilst he made another. Not major issues but very worrying standards given what they charge here - 10 euros a coke. They do seem to favour particular people mainly Italians and do not make you feel special at all. Our first suite had no balcony so we insisted on moving as we had booked this, you really have to fight for everything, no tea or coffee provided in rooms but why would they when they charge 15 euros to bring you a cup, teabag and pot of hot water. All in all a complete rip off and even though it is a pretty area we found we enjoyed ourselves much more when away from the place, the locals in the village are very nice, friendly Italian people they seemed to care much much more than anybody at Villa D'Este.
