My wife and I stayed at this legendary hotel in May, 2014. Room was spacious and reasonably furnished. What was noticeable is that it wasn't as clean as one would expect from a $1,000 a night hotel. Granted, the hotel is old and is difficult to keep in great shape, but a specific example was our balcony. The balcony was concrete with a concrete barrier. It looked like it hadn't been cleaned in centuries. We didn't want to walk on it barefoot because it was so dirty. A little pressure washing would go a long way.

That being said, the employees were marvelous, the service was outstanding. We had dinner in the main dining room one night and although it wasn't inexpensive, it was very good and not overpriced for the quality of the dishes, ambiance and service. The dining room in beautiful.

The grounds are nice and the nearby town is cute and worth a visit.

Overall, a nice experience but some refreshing up and cleaning would help.

What a beautiful old hotel decorated in the style that reflects its age and grandeur. We were warmly greeted by exceptional staff on our arrival and our luggage disappeared quickly to our room. We were shown to our room by a staff member who explained the hotel facilities as well as how to operate things in our room. We were fortunate enough to have a Lakeview room, which was wonderful. The room itself was only small but sufficient. The air conditioner did not work properly but that did not spoil our stay. The bathroom was superb with well stocked toiletries, nice thick bath sheets, face washers, bathrobes and slippers plus a good hairdryer. We received complimentary water daily, a nice bottle of champagne on arrival as well as chocolates on turndown with a sheet on either the history of the hotel or information regarding the area, which was enjoyable to read and learn about. The daily buffet breakfast was great as they had a good selection of food and the eggs were cooked as per your request. We ate at the hotels Grill restaurant where the service was spot on and the food was delicious. We decided against the Veranda restaurant as gentlemen are required to wear a jacket and tie. The internet connection here was good. The facilities available were in good order and most of the little details had been given the correct attention. Location wise the hotel is in an excellent position – right on the lake, close to shops and restaurants in Cernobbio and the ferry stop within walking distance. A concierge(s) is available in both buildings and are very helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at this property thanks to the excellent staff and facilities on hand. Security is very good too.

Room tip: Recommend a Lakeview if you can afford it.

The Hotel and grounds are absolutely stunning.

The service is impeccable, a beautiful, glamorous and elegant set up.

Both restaurants are incredible and the views are indescribably perfect.

You get the feeling that everything is exactly how it was 70 years ago - in a great way.

We had a room right on the edge of the lake and it was stunning. The only thing I would say is that the room itself was a little dark and could have done with some freshening up.

Apart from that a lovely experience!

We have been to villa d'este many times, a very beautiful location and a very special place, we only went for lunch though and took our young children along for the first time. We all sit down and start to order food for our four kids and are told by the waiter they can order us kids size portions, this is great, but no kids menus on offer though! The food is brought out for the kids and the serving size is adult size (fine we think), we then get the bill and are charged 42 euro's for each of our child's main course and 21 euros for each of our childs ice cream, so we are charged full adult price, I call the waiter over and ask why are we being charged full price (when ordering the kids food the waiter of course did not have the courtesy to tell us our kids food would be charged the same as adult prices).... So lunch for our four kids was around 250 euro's..that's a first for us..... I don't mind paying a premium for us adults at Villa D'este but I am enraged that they did not even have the courtesy to tell us we would be charged full price, Italy is the only country I have been to in the world that will rip off its visitors as badly as they do even St Tropez is kinder to your pockets (sometimes)! I will stay away in future and never take my kids, lesson learnt and to let you know Villa D'este has no kids menus/prices available for anything so you have been warned!

Room tip: Lake view only

One never mentioned plus for the hotel is the easy access to it. You don't have to drive through busy and sometimes jammed Como streets to reach it. And the parking is free in a garage and can be self parked. That means you can explore the surrounding villages at your well without any prearrangement or disturbing anyone. The hotel is located within walking distance to a near by small town and, of course, by the lake. The hotel had its glory days and still has wonderful facilities. But many newer resorts came to the market in the last decade with much contemporary taste and amenities. This hotel does show its age but is still impeccable in service and its integration with its surrounding environment. And its age does add a lot to its charm in a positive way. Rooms facing the lake with balcony are really nice. I have no idea how good or bad the garden facing rooms will be. I didn't try the formal dinner because I was not agreeable with the concept of eating with jacket and tie. But the Grill restaurant still offered wonderful foods in an informal formality. The breakfast was included in the room rate and can be enjoyed either indoor or outdoor by the lake. The selection of foods for the breakfast is simply one of the best in my experience in any European hotel. April is probably a low season for Como. I just don't think this hotel can be as charming and peaceful when filled with high season guests. But it is a place you can come back again and again in the right time and with the right room.

Room tip: Lake view with balcony
