“Traditional Italian Hotel”
Reviewed 30 August 2014

We were part of the Riviera Travel group at the beginning of August and really enjoyed sharing our albeit busy week there with very nice fellow travellers. There were cultural and interesting excursions every day and our tour manager (Marina) was very knowledgable.

The hotel has lovely grounds and swimming pool area, its location is central but at the same time quiet and the hotel staff are excellent. We were pleased we paid the extra for a lake view - breath-taking. The food was very good with lots of local produce (their local cheeses are really excellent), well-presented and buffet style.

Our room was nice and spacious, the air-conditioning functioned and was easy to operate. Bed linens and towels were changed every day. Some might find the linen hand towels somewhat unusual but this is typical/traditional Italian and we were pleased that the hotel has managed to keep this, and other cultural characteristics, which contribute to its charm instead of succuming to the pressures of modern-day, money-grabbing commercialism.

We were fortunate (?!) enough to witness a rare thunder and lightning storm in the early hours. The mix of the lightning flashes, thunderclaps and tranquility against the backdrop of the Alps was quite spectacular.

We felt the only drawback to the hotel is the absence of a ramp for the less able-bodied amongst us. Although there are only a few steps to negotiate at the entrance of the hotel, there really should be a ramp - the handrail doesn't suffice. If the hotel prefers not to install a permanent ramp, perhaps it might consider providing a 'Portable' ramp?

I stayed at this hotel as part of a Riviera holiday group in early August. Found the hotel lovely with extremely pleasant and helpful staff and good food. I would echo the views of others that it's well worth paying for a lake view if possible as this was stunning. The room was light, spacious and pleasant with a good bathroom. The air conditioning was easy to control and worked well. The location of the hotel is brilliant - just a few metres from the lakeside where there was plenty of activity with boats coming and going, a food and craft market one week-end etc. Cernobbio itself is small and fairly quiet. You can only walk a very short distance along the lakefront and nightlife is limited - a few bars and restaurants and occasional concerts in the nearby villa -so if that's an issue for you may want to consider a bigger resort. Como town is accessible by boat or bus, or it's about a 3 mile walk..
Food - a good range at the breakfast buffet on the mezzanine floor. We had dinner in a group in a nice dining room with lake views. It was buffet style but as numbers were relatively small it wasn't the 'scrum' that these can sometimes be. Choice was quite small but food was of good quality and well cooked. There was always a good range of salad, fresh fruit and delicious cheese available. Starters usually included a pasta which was so good I frequently added some to my main course as well .The buffet style meant that you could 'pace' the meal for yourself and the lovely staff never hurried you.
I really enjoyed my week at the Regina Olga and would recommend.

Room Tip: Get a lake view room if possible.

We were here for a week. We could see Lake Como from our window and easily walk to catch a boat to almost any location on the Lake. Walks to restaurants as well as the winding cobblestone paths in town was easy and charming. The breakfasts were substantial, European buffets. The hotel has a small bar area perfect for gathering with friends or a cocktail alone. The grounds were lovely. The hotel was very clean, a little dated in terms of technological support but we were on vacation! We had a number of tour dinners in the hotel and they were excellent. Service was very good.We would return!

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view room.

Visited this hotel two years ago, it hasn't changed, which in my view is a good thing.

Lets be clear this is not a modern city hotel, it is your traditional Italian locally run, unique hotel. I suspect the majority of reviews from UK based guests are from those that have been on pre-costed coach holidays, hence the comments on standard rooms and comments of the food which is a set menu. As an independent traveler I found the local to be very good, overlooking the lake, and rooms of a traditional but comfortable standard.

Service was polite and helpful when required and although I only ate breakfast the selection was typically Italian and of good quality.

Room Tip: If you can ask for lake view, it will be worth any extra cost

I don't want to sound too negative about this hotel, so first, the good points:
It has centrally situated with beautiful views of the lake (provided you book a room with a view, otherwise you might find yourself looking at the car park).
It is conveniently placed close to the boat pier for lake trips.
The air conditioning works well.
It has a pleasant pool area.
The staff are polite and efficient.
Now for the bad points, and I'm afraid there were just too many:
Shabby entrance lounge, very old fashioned furnishings that have seen better days. The same applies to the bedrooms, which are a decent size but the furniture surely dates back to the 60's, as do the bed coverings and curtains. There is lack of drawer space, we had to pile clothing in the open-fronted bedside tables.
The bathroom is merely adequate with poor quality toiletries, paper thin towels, very thin loo paper, and a minute bath/shower which had obviously not been used as a bath recently because when I turned it on, lots of black gunk came out of the taps. The hair drier is the old-fashioned kind with a hose, very inefficient. Every time the person in the room next door uses the toilet you can hear it flush.
There is no Sky TV, and a poor choice of English language channels.
No free WiFi - this is not acceptable in the 21st century.
No tea/coffee making facilities in the room, nor is bottled water provided, except in the mini bar at an extortionate price.
We did not eat in the hotel apart from breakfast, which was barely adequate.
This is not what I would expect from a hotel charging 300 euros-plus a night. It really is such a shame because with an injection of cash to upgrade the interior, this hotel could be wonderful, given its location and outside appearance. As it stands, it offers seriously bad value for money.

Room Tip: Ask for a full lake view room on a high floor.

We went with Riviera travel on their Lake Como tour. As per the Sicily tour the food at the hotels were sub standard. I assume as the group is budgeted to a certain amount per head the quality is sacrificed. I would recommend that if you go on a tour take it as a B+B and go out for your food. of course you do miss out sitting with your companions from the tour which is disappointing but going out in the evening does add to your holiday experience.
The staff at the hotel were friendly and the rooms good, and so i dont wish for my review of the tour food to reflect on the general feel of the hotel which is very nice.
We did find that the water system was noisy and if fellow travellers got up in the night and flush the chain we all are woken

Before setting off on our holiday we looked at the reviews and wished we had chosen a different hotel. On arriving we found the hotel staff very efficient in booking us in. They were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Nothing was too much for them. The hotel may be a little dated but that added to the charm, it was very clean and the bedding and towels were changed every day. Situated in a beatiful position and a short walk to the ferry station. I only regret was that we didn't ask for a lake view with a balcony. We would not hesitate recommending this hotel.
