“Newmarket Tuscany Tour”
Reviewed 1 October 2012

We must have been there the same week as Trevor H but ours seemed to be a much more pleasant stay. We too were upgraded from the Plaza and we heard from some of their guests that the furniture was a bit "iffy". However we had no problems with the room whatsoever. The bed was large and comfortable, the room and bathroom were quite big and we always had plenty of hot water. The evening meals were good althought the desserts could have done with a bit more variety. We had a typical Tuscan special meal on the last night which was extreley good. Breakfasts on the other hand left a lot to be desired. Where was the fresh fruit salad and fresh yogurts ? I didn't want a full English just a bit more fresh stuff. The hotel itself has no information readily available although Reception would provide a street map. Chianciano Terme is a quiet town with expensive clothes shops and with just a few bars. The bars were reasonably cheap. This town is basically a place to rest while you are touring Tuscany. Every day is a trip for 1 to 2 hours to Siena, Florence, Rome etc. so by the time you have had dinner you are very tired.

Newmarket "upgraded" us from the Hotel Plaza shortly before arrival for reasons known only to them. It transpired it was more of a downgrade. Recent critical reviews reflected our experience. To be fair, we were lucky and got a room with balcony at the rear (only half the upper floor rooms have a balcony at all). It was spacious and clean but the beds were old and in need of replacement. The shower cubicle was tiny and the hot water supply was on several occasions non-existent. The air conditioning was not switched on at all in 7 days despite temperatures in the upper 20's. The management are either trying to reduce global warmiing or save on electricity as lighting everywhere was also at a bare minimum. Food at breakfast and dinner was boring and basic - a variant of pork most nights. Staff were too few in number but helpful. The resort is not very tourist orientated with too few bars and mainly expensive boutiques which seemed to cater for affluent locals. It is about 2 hours by coach from Forence and Sienna and nearby attractions are few.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear are good but noisy at night

We upgraded to this hotel as it was rated 4 stars, but deserved 2 or less. Rooms are in deplorable condition - furniture falling apart, amateur wiring, cracked tiles and broken shower rose. No info on hotel in rooms (exception - non-existent minibar card with prices in Lira). Mattress was smaller than the bed frame, rather hard on the shins. Single pillow with not much stuffing. Air conditioning did not work in any rooms. Ugly views of other hotels. No charm, little if any decorations.

Very few people available - seldom anyone at reception, bar usually vacant. Wifi worked but would not connect to internet for most PC's.

Half board basis - breakfast was an unvarying course of a singletype of cheese and ham, monotonous after 3 days let alone 7. First few days there were no frech fruit. Dinners were not much better - chef needs some training and new ideas. Vegetables were overcooked, pasta was only thing on menu that was reasonably edible most nights. Wine choices were OK but mainly local. The pepper mill is in great demand (there may have been 2 for 250 people)

Complaints to Newmarket Holidays were unsuccessful. Their representative was most unhelpfu -he even forgot people on the first tourl. These folks forget that once their credibility is tarnished, people will avoid booking with them in future.

Room Tip: Stay in main part of hotel, not above the dining area. Best advice is to avoid the place completely...

All in all a terrible experience - eg. had raw/undercooked meat served on 2 occasions. It appeared that the food was brought in from somewhere as there were no cooking smells etc? Most of the food was awful. Rude managers. Were told couldn't have air-con on as not warm enough = was 29 degrees at the time. The room was dark and noisy. The bed and furnishings were old and the mattress and pillows were hard and lumpy. The bedrooms needed a full refurb. & the stair ways were inadequately lit. The bathroom was dark and the shower cubicle tiny. This hotel was more on the lines of a 2 star rating

Plus points - some of the waitresses and the barman were friendly (obviously working long shifts). Most internal areas were reasonably clean.

Spent 5 nights at the Astra with meals taken at the Cristallo, on the Leger Treasures of Tuscany,Rome & Green Heart of Italy tour for the single traveller. Before going I was a bit perturb by some of the negative comments but found everything very pleasent indeed. All the rooms where unique some with double beds, safe and mini fridge, mine was a single room comfortable enough with a good powerful shower and hair dryer which dried my shoulder length hair well, should have left mine back home but took due to negative reviews. On a couple of the floors they had sun terraces with sun loungers,as with the fresh water pool which was adequate enough for a relaxing cool off. (unable to down load photos, shame)
Dining area large and pleasent. Plenty to graze on for breakfast and a choice of evening meal.

Second review of the trip. This was a lucky up-grade for the whole bus. We were supposed to be in the sister hotel next door. Service was fast and efficient (check-in, bar and meals). Beautiful foyer/lounge area with grand piano! We often sat here at night, having a drink and chatting to friends. Room was standard size, good condition, clean and tidy. Air conditioning until midnight then off until morning. On a timer, controlled centrally, therefore can't be changed. Quite warm through the night but bearable (it had been between 35-40 degrees outside, during the day). Meals-5 courses as standard with 7 on the Tuscan theme night. I tended to skip the soup and pasta course and I still came away feeling full. Tasty and of good quality. Breakfast -plenty of choice and continental. A personal preference would have been more fruit, please! Lots of lovely looking cakes. They were very tempting.
In terms of location there is a great bar across the road with live music. We even had a wee dance. A really lovely, fun atmosphere.
We didn't have time to visit the spa or pool. We're hoping to rectify this in the autumn as we are returning for a further week on a slightly different tour. We're sticking with Newmarket. Great company and at this point we would say they have a gem of a tour guide in Diane. Honest, open, friendly and extremely funny.

Note: I have only given the room a very good because the first room, in the riva del guarda hotel, was huge in comparison. Being Scottish I prefer a freezing cold bedroom. In terms of personal preference I would have liked control of the air con.

This hotel should never be classed as a 4 star, 2 star rating would be nearer the mark.
The food was very poor and most meals were cold when served. There was mould in the fridge and in the bathroom.
