Although there had been no English review of the restaurant for some time, we had stopped there for a cocktail before dinner on several previous occasions and thought it looked a good spot for a celebration and had great views over the sea towards Portofino. Hown right we were. Our dinner last night was sensational - delicious and imaginitive food (the lobster picnic was hilarious!) the service was friendly and helpful and although the food was expensive by local standards we thought that given the qualty it was decent value. The wines (their suggestions) were local and excellent and sensibly priced. Not a restaurant to pop into for a casual snack but a real treat! Please note that although I have ticked the 'Family' box below, our children are adults and I would nor recommend the restaurant for babies and young children and have therefore not rated it highly in resoect of 'Families with Children'

This was an experience! I had read reviews on this restaurant and wanted to try it while in Liguria.
We had found the restaurant very quickly. We were the only diners there for quite a while but we wanted to dine early.
We are a chef's nightmare, vegetarians. It didn't phase this place! The food is divine. When it arrived at the table, it was almost a shame to eat it. Great care had been put into the presentation and it tasted heavenly.
Portions are small but I would say you wouldn't be able to finish a bigger portion. Each course was better than the last and we had wine recommended by the owner? We didn't ask, but he was a professional to his fingertips. Food of this quality isn't cheap and we were happy to pay 91 euros for our experience there. If you are in the district and want a little slice of heaven...go there!

Celebrating being in Italy with special Italian friends, and fortunately it was British Mother's Day, our friends reserved a table for Sunday lunch.
The food, and service was outstanding, the decor very traditional in keeping with the nautical theme of Lord Horatio Nelson and his ships.
Highly recommend reserving a table if visiting nearby Portofino or Santa Margherita Ligure
You will not be disappointed !

It is a kind of a luxury place-best plates and services, but the food is fusion, like a little portion on the big plate, if you like this style-it is for you.

This fine restaurant has been around since 1969, just months after my first visit to the region courtesy of the U.S. Navy. While we have been returning to Liguria for 28 years, and for the past 20 several times a year, this was our first visit to the Lord Nelson. It won't be our last!

There is a lot that is charmingly old school here. Our waiter/bartender was wearing a tuxedo. The polished wood floors, brass nautical artifacts are pleasant, but not overdone. The setting, at the far end of a seaside promenade gives a commanding view of the ocean. The welcome by the British owner is warm and genuine. The quiet, authentic jazz music in the background added to the ambiance. Service was earnest and conscientious, albeit a little distracted (how can you forget who gets which course when the dining room is nearly empty and you are serving only two guests?)

All of the above would be insufficient if the food wasn't first rate. It is! We don't mind paying a steep price when something special is on offer. Our pasta course, fish and dessert were all presented artfully, with interesting fresh ingredients (such as ginger and sweet onions from Tropea). As advertised, the wine list is quite extensive. While we were inclined to stick with a quality local Ligurian wine, we still had a choice of several dozen Pigatos, Vermentinos and more obscure micro vintages.

Bottom line, for foodies, it was worth a trip over from Alassio for lunch despite the less than ideal Italian Rail service. If you are staying east of Genoa, all the more reason to make this a regular stop. As previous reviewers have stated, the prices are high, but fortunately the quality is as well. We will be back.
