“Good hotel in an interesting town”
Reviewed 19 February 2014

Centrally located in the old town, this 3 star hotel does everything well. The rooms are clean and spacious, the location is quiet, and it is only a short walk to the shops set under the arched walkways for which the town is famous. The staff were friendly and helpful. Wifi was available in the room but is chargeable if you want more than an hour at a time. I was only there for one night but was perfectly satisfied with my stay.

This is an older hotel in the center of town with a lot of character. We were lucky enough to have a private terrace, and happy to see a clothesline for our use! The restaurant looked a bit plain/simple, but we were surprised to find it served us one of the best meals we had in 3 weeks in Italy. We would definitely return.

This is a good hotel to use as a base to see the Liguria coast.
Hotel is easy to find in Chiavari and first impressions were good. We had sent our luggage on before us and it was waiting in our room when we got there. The reception area is air conditioned and very attractive. There are public rooms for guests to connect to the internet, play cards etc and there is a bar for social drinks. There is also a very attractive terraced area beside the (very small) pool with jacuzzi. It gets the sun all day and has a bar for drinks and food. Not always manned though. We were however a little disappointed to see that it had private functions mostly at weekends and hotel guests weren't able to use the facility at these times. I found this a bit disappointing because the terrace had been an attraction for me when looking at the hotel facilities.
Our room was a good size, but had no particular view from the shuttered window. The room and en suite were spotlessly clean. Air conditioning was good and very quiet.
Hotel toiletries were supplied if you like that. Decor was a bit tired, soft furnishings dated but well kept. We were a little disappointed not to have tea making facilities in the room as we were staying for two weeks. We had a safe and mini bar in the room and there was a good assortment of hangers in the wardrobe.Beds were a little hard for our liking and pillows were very hard. Again personal choice here.
During our stay, the room was kept clean and tidy (important to me) The chambermaid was very efficient and managed always to have the room ready for us very quickly each day. Top marks to her!
Dining? Continental. We asked only once for a cooked breakfast. It looked appalling and wasn't eaten. Afterwards, we just ate the food on offer on the buffet table. It became a little boring after a while.Croissants, cake, yoghurt, cereal, fresh fruit, ham, and cheese. Oh! and boiled eggs! We are vegetarian so our choices were very limited and we were never asked if we would like anything else. The breakfast room had no menu so there was a choice of continental buffet breakfast or nothing.
After a rocky start with the breakfast room staff, we grew to like them and they were at all times polite and efficient.
Dinner was much better, a good choice of foods for our palate and very good service again. We were rescued by one of the waitresses when we had ordered an item from the dinner menu which, unknown to us, contained meat. She came over and told us and for that, I'm very grateful. Top marks to her too! Can't fault this kind of service.
Reception staff were most attentive and overcame our lack of Italian very well. They helped us book boat trips and gave us good local advice. I had a dental problem and they organised a visit to the dentist for me.
I worked in hospitality for a good portion of my working life and I know how much hard work goes into successfully running a hotel. I would say they are all doing a very good job.
Overall, we had a good stay here and would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms have balconies.

This hotel puts the comfort and relaxtion of its guests first. The staff are very professional but retain a relaxed and friendly approach at all times. The terrace and pool area are wonderful places to relax, spotlessly clean, well furnished and attentive bar staff. The buffet breakfast was excellent - all self service with a great cappuccino from the coffee machine! Hotel Monte Rosa is well located in Chiavari, no more than 10 minutes walk from the railway station and very close to the shops and restaurants. Chiavari is a great town to base yourself in for seeing all that the beautiful Ligurian Riviera has to offer. It's a very pretty town and not overrun with tourists or souvenir shops, unlike some of the more well known towns along this coastline. It is extremely easy and cheap to travel by train around this beautiful region and for those days when you aren't out seeing the sights, it is a pleasure to wander round the porticoed streets of Chiavari or along the promenaded sea front and to relax and unwind at the wonderful Hotel Monte Rosa. Would definitely return to this hotel without hesitation.

I am the family holiday monitor in that I find the accommodation according to the requirements laid down by my husband, 2 daughters and me. The requirements are normally the same – hotel that serves breakfast, is not large and impersonal, is in a town, has a swimming pool that is big enough to ‘swim lengths’ for exercise purposes and is within easy walking distance of restaurants. The list is impossible to fulfil completely. The Hotel Monte Rosa came very close though. The only missing item is the pool big enough for swimming exercise lengths.
We stayed in room 218 which has a terrace rather than a small balcony. It was lovely. The room was large and comfortable. Our daughters had a standard room which was a good size with the wardrobe and storage in a sort of ‘ante-room’. They were immediately opposite the church or rather the church bells. The bells are something to behold. At 5.30 pm they played the least bell like peal I have ever heard. Very entertaining.
The pool area was sufficiently spacious with ample sun shades and pool towels provided. The staff were all helpful, polite and professional. Everything was clean. I think the hotel ranks as 3 stars but is worthy of more.
What made the holiday for us was that the hotel is in the old and quiet town centre of Chiavari. We travelled from England by train right to Chiavari and then walked the 300m to the hotel – brilliant – and easy. It meant everything was convenient; supermarkets, restaurants, self-guided walking routes, the Cinque Terre (by train), Portofino (train and then by foot), shops, beach (not so good). This is a picturesque, working, holiday town and perfect for the traveller who wants to see lots, experience Italy but not be overwhelmed by thronging tourists. We never seem to return to holiday destinations so I guess we won’t return – but I could easily do so and a better holiday destination would be difficult to find according to our family requirements!

Room Tip: Room 218 is large and has a terrace

We had a lovely large room on the third floor, big comfy bed, excellent bathroom and air conditioning, we left our car in the hotel garage which has valet service and was quite safe. The reception staff spoke English and were very helpful, even arranging a boat trip for us. The pool area is fantastic staffed all day with helpful guys who will fetch drinks and food throughout the day, the pool bar is a great place to relax in the evening and on one night had a live band with cocktails and free food, breakfast was a plentiful buffet and you can order eggs (although it's not obvious) English is widely spoken by all of the staff which is helpful. Chiavari is a delightful town with a large choice of restaurants and a lovely promenade, we will be back

Room Tip: Get a room on the third floor

We stayed in this Chiavari hotel for three nights at the recommendation of Italian friends. Our need was for unfussy comforts, easy access to the centre town area, friendly staff reasonably fluent in English and space in which to relax. We found it all at Hotel Monte Rosa and when we eventually checked out our hopes and expectations had been well catered for. Rooms and the building generally are clean. The pool area with adjacent bar and restaurant offers sanctuary from a world which whizzes

past at some rate. Nights were quiet and conducive to sleep after a set of excellent meals in nearby restaurants offering a range of regional styles of cooking. The Monte Rosa hotel is renowned locally for good cuisine but for a change of scene we had our meals elsewhere. Breakfasts were more than adequate, served in a restrained Italian buffet style. We enjoyed the 'just get on with it' ambiance offered to guests and we soaked up the pleasures of quiet secluded privacy that prevailed immediately before schools broke up for the summer. We assume the typical holiday pandemonium prevails in this coastal resort from late June to end August. Thereafter the gem should start to shine again and we intend to call back to find out.

Room Tip: Top floor at end of a corridor leading out to bar and pool area
