“A good base along the coast”
Reviewed 13 March 2012

Our stay here was very pleasant, with a nice and helpful staff. The room was basic, clean and comfortable with a view of the sea. Staying in Chiavari is a delight because it is fairly tourist-free and a wonderful walking town with many car-free streets in the historical center. And the hotel is quite near the train station, eliminating the need for expensive taxis back and forth. Daytripping to other coastal towns was a breeze. And the restaurants here are excellent! I would say a very good alternative to the higher priced towns in the area.

Room Tip: We liked the view rooms.

We spent 4 days on the Italian Riviera and had plans to visit all the small towns between Portofino & Cinque Terre. We decided to stay in Chiavari because the price point for hotels which a bit cheaper compared to the other towns and it was the middle town between all the other towns we planned on visiting. The town of Chiavari is not a tourist town by any means and not much happening in the town, which was a disappointment. The hotel has very friendly and helpful staff. The rooms were a bit disappointing. The beds were very hard, but still managed to sleep well, haha. Bathrooms are narrow and small! The tub/shower was very awkward and the towels smelt like terrible dill pickles...random, but so terrible to dry off with. We did not spend alot of time in the hotel, so we didnt mind that much. I would advise renting a scooter and riding to all the fun, more happening towns along the Italian Riviera (Santa Margherita & Sestri Levante specifically)

We had booked this for 3 nights on a special offer as it looked like a convenient base for the coastline towards Genoa. We left after one night, sacrificing the payment for the other two. The only thing it has going for it is location - a few minutes walk from the stony beach in the pleasant sea-side town of Chiavari. A 1970s style hotel it is run-down and shabby with the most basic and unpleasant hotel room we have encountered in many years - a tiled floor, ugly yellow-beige walls, a bare light-bulb, a stained bed cover on the metal framed bed, a few makeshift bits of furniture with barely room to move around them, a smell of disinfectant permeating the wide corridor outside with the grubby carpet, a buffet breakfast of sorts in the depress basement cafe. There have to be better and more attractive 3 star hotels in this price range and in this area. But after one night we had enough and headed for Genova as fast as the train could get us out of the place.
