Great place. Good food, local feel in a small village. The service is lovely - the place is run by a husband and wife. House wine was so good we drove to Montecino (the source!) the next day to buy cases of the wine to bring home.

After being shown to our table, we were treated to a long homily in perfect English by the owner about the “philosophy” of the restaurant..... the seasons, local produce, blending of flavours and everything “fatti a mano”. A bit over-the-top, but so far, so good. We were finally handed our menus, but now every single dish on the menu was individually described down to the salt and pepper (which incidentally was on every dish). By now, I really wanted to be left alone, but there was still the wine to be described. I quickly interjected that I would take the house wine and a carafe of very acceptable Nobile de Montepulciano to arrive to soothe my troubled nerves. When the food arrived it was really good with subtle and interesting new flavours, such as, ricotta ravioli with ginger and lemon zest (and salt and pepper!), absolutely delicious. Secondi was perfectly slow-cooked cheek of beef, absolutely divine. The trouble was that we were asked at least 4 times during each course if everything was alright. With a little less intrusive service this would be an exceptional restaurant.

The owner & his wife are not professional cooks, but they are professional hosts/restaurateurs and , in his case, entertainer. Effusely friendly & engaging, his focused attention seems very personal & welcoming until you hear him saying exactly the same thing to 3 other tables.

Zuppa takes a Slow Food approach & offers a limit menu daily based on what is seasonally available locally. Much is made of the complimentary glass of wine "paired" w appetizers. The quality of the appetizers is good, especially the cheeses, but the portions are small and the wine, about a 1 1/2 oz. (50ml) pour came from 1.5 L "jugs" of red, white or rosé.
As the name implies, there are a number of soups. The fresh tomato soup, essentially a "papa" with basil instead of sage & with vegetable broth, was clean & fresh, but unremarkable. The roasted white eggplant soup had little eggplant flavor, no sense of smokiness, and a disagreeably crunchy mouth feel.. The bean soup was workmen-like and fully flavored with a tomato base.
Service broke down with the other primi. One of us waited 10 min (and reminded the server) before both dishes were present. The gnudi were good, if unremarkable. The pici with duck ragu was disappointing; the sauce was from the same base as the bean soup, and the ragu had no flavor of duck. It could have been any meat.
The rabbit with ginger and lemon, served in casserole, clearly had lemon zest but the ginger was undetectable. The meat was sadly over-cooked, almost to the point of being stringy.
The wine the owner chose for us, in carafe, was adequate, but was likely the red "jug" wine.
My sense is that the accolades Zuppa receives are due to the Slow Food approach and the owner's "personal" interaction and presence. We had no food that would warrant a return.

We were a bit hesitant to visit this restaurant due to reading a few bad reviews but we were so glad we ignored them and ate at La Solita Zuppa. If you want a truly amazing dining experience go to this restaurant! The owners are very friendly and provide a unique menu with traditional Tuscan dishes. The owner explains the entire menu, which was very helpful and he spoke very good english. And then, he asked us questions about what we liked, made suggestions about what to eat and paired wine with each selection. The house wine was fabulous. With each course we ate, our host provided information about the meal and some of the history behind the dish. The flavors were fantastic and we are still talking about our meal there to friends back home. We will definately eat here again when we visit Tuscany in the future. Buonissimo!!!

We went back for the second time this year (having previously eaten last summer there) and we glad we did. The food is absolutely amazing as is the house wine. Service is wonderful and they are very attentive - they personally come and describe everything on the day's menu - they also have an ala carte menu.

overall a very pleasant meal - will return again once we visit Tuscany again.
