“Erice exploration”
Reviewed 22 November 2013

We stayed here as a three night stop over for our honeymoon. We stayed in one of the small lodges (large bedroom and bathroom and own balcony). We arrived in the dark - Erice is full of tiny cobbled streets - hotel was easy enough to find and well signposted.

Receptionist was very welcoming and let us leave our bags in reception so we could go straight to dinner (long drive!). The restaurant did not have a particularly great ambience. This could be as the place is used a base for small conferences and groups so the general vibe was functional dining. The staff were very professional and over the three nights we got to know some of them well and they were great fun. The food was delicious and the expresso's the best that we had on our whole honeymoon.

We woke up to an absolutely stunning view from the room, absolutely breathtaking.

The hotel is well placed to explore Erice from and only a five to ten minute walk from the cable station.

There was an English speaking lady at reception during the day who was very helpful and helped us with any information that we needed.

The decoration in the rooms , particularly the bathroom was dated, but the views and beautiful setting of the hotel more than made up for this.

Recommend a stay there!

The hotel sits a top a large hill over looking the water and town. Driving up to the town reminded me of the Pikes Peak hill climb. But once there the views are stunning and the town is charming. The rooms are actually a small cottage with a walled patio. The room was clean and comfortable. There is no air conditioning. They have a small restaurant and the food was very good. Would definitely book a room with the hotel on the next trip.

All rooms were quite private, because each of them was separated from another. We felt like in our private small house. The room was decorated in a very simple countryside style. If you are cold it is possible to switch on a hitting in the room . There was very calm at night; we didn't hear any noise here. We enjoyed great view through the window in the early morning and from the terrace during the day. We liked the yard, there were great pines everywhere. For breakfast we got not only cafe &cruasans , but and apples, pears, jam, bread, juice, cheese, ham. Cruasans were especially perfect. The city centre was easily reachable on foot.
As a negative part we could say that every time when we needed a receptionist we should looking for her by ourselves, because she wasn't in the reception. The shower cabin was such a narrow, that my husband couldn't lean without opening cabin’s doors. And as it had been already said by other reviewers, the damp in the room was felt. In our opinion this hotel is good for staying not longer than one night here.

Stayed at La Pineta for 3 nights as our base while visiting western Sicily, and we're happy we did. The property is lovely, on the edge of the hill, with a lovely common area under the pine trees and views down to the water. The common area is the only place you can receive wifi, and it is only adequate if you sit right outside the office. Otherwise wifi is weak, and non-existent in the rooms. Sitting there worked for us in July, but I can imagine it being unreasonable in the rain or cold. Onsite parking was very convenient.

The rooms are definitely "rustic" and could use updating, not sparkling clean, and the shower is tiny. We had 2 rooms (some family stayed in a separate room). Our room was booked as the "superior" double and theirs was booked as the "standard" double, but they were put into a "superior" on check in because the standards were taken. I mention this because their room was in no way "superior". The "balcony" that was supposed to come with even a standard double was just a small area outside the door where you could set up the 2 lounge chairs that they supplied, with absolutely no privacy or view. Their room was dark, as the only window faced a wall.

The rooms have a refrigerator, which came in handy because any food left out attracts many ants. The hot water in your own bathroom tank is, indeed, scalding hot, so be careful. There are no screens on the windows, but we were able to leave the balcony door open the first night with no bugs. However, there was music playing somewhere, and we could hear it all night, so bring earplugs. Plus, the property lights are very bright, meaning our window shutters had to be shut. The second night there was wind, and because there was no way to secure the door shutters open, we had to close and latch them or else they banged all night - thus our room was very dark. The AC was adequate, but it blew directly on one side of the bed, which was annoying and unhealthy.

Beware that driving directions lead you to a narrow, winding road that could be treacherous in the night or rain. But if you take the road to Valderice and then into Erice, you will find yourself on an updated road that is wider and easier to drive (we didn't know that prior to arriving and came in the difficult way). Once you get into Erice, you will have to negotiate the small village streets to get to the hotel, but just follow the signs and go slowly and you'll be fine.

The breakfast was adequate, except for the juice (watery) and the coffee (ask for a cappuccino or espresso and you'll be happier). We ate one dinner at the hotel's restaurant, and while my husband's fish soup (an entree) was very good and a mixed antipasto was decent, but we otherwise can't recommend it.

We walked everywhere in Erice from the hotel, and didn't find the uphill from the hotel onerous. We enjoyed walking the city and shopping in the little shops.

Despite all of the above complaints, I still do recommend La Pineta for convenience/location/parking, price, and the site under the pines.

Room Tip: If you pay additional for a "superior" room, make sure it's one with a real, private b...

This hotel is rustic, in every way. It is relatively easy to find, and that is good in Eriche. The staff is wonderful, helpful, available at most hours, good advice, high quality. There's just not much you can do with this property given its age. You get an individual unit, and the historic feel is appropriate. However everything from the linens to mattresses, to furniture is just plain old. The food is basic, dining room staff are nice. La Pineta is expensive given what you get. We wouldn't know how to upgrade La Pineta so recommend that if your expectations are average and you are looking for zero luxuries, then do stay here. The staff, location, fast internet make it a bit above average.

Wonderful view, free car park (a rarity in Erice) but awful room (#20)
Erice is windy and humid (it's the charm) but the rooms in La Pineta have the same climate you can find outside: I woke up with my hair wet due to how damp the room was.
The toilet was awful: toilet paper in a dispenser like you find in public toilets; holes in the wall and tiny shower cubicle - I'm 5'6.
The mattress and the bed were old and half broken.
The breakfast buffet was below average and very limited.
The staff were ... Well upon arrival, we were directed to our room with a finger and a glance in the general direction and had to find it unaccompanied, which is not easy, given the whole structure is built as an old mountain village.
The waiter at the breakfast bar offered me another table's discarded coffee when I asked for one. Needless to say, I politely refused the offer and furthermore would not recommend this hotel.

As nice as the pictures indicate, and closer to town than the map indicates also. It was easy to find and the parking was free. Cappuccini were prepared at breakfast by a person; not machine-made. (This was the case in most of the places we stayed in Sicily.) The breakfast was typical for Sicily, and that's actually a compliment. It wasn't overboard, but everything that you need. The wi-fi was free, and we could pick up a signal in the public areas. The rooms are basic, and they and the whole complex are a little rustic, in a delightful 1950's way. Our room, as many of theirs are, was a stand-alone unit - lots of privacy, plenty of fresh air, and a fantastic view. We had a private balcony that was very large, and had chairs and recliners. We stayed there at the end of 2 weeks driving around Sicily, and wish we'd allotted more than one night. It would have been a fantastic place to just sit with a drink in a chair under the pine trees (there were plenty of public areas) and relax. It smells good up there and there's lots of birdsong. We are there mid-June, so could sleep with the doors to the terrace open.

Saturday night there was some party noise from another resort down the hill, but that's why you never travel without earplugs.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a terrace and sea view. Worth it!
