“Trip confusion with real 800-year-old Umbrian Castello di Montegiove”
Reviewed 25 October 2013

Since I was researching a possible stay at Castello di Montegiove (the 800 year old historical preserved and restored CASTLE and town of Montegiove, located -- not surprisingly - in the actual town of Montegiove UMBRIA, Italy), I think folks can understand why the paid ads and general confusion in internet search for this HOTEL in a different region - Le Marche -was making it really hard for trip planning on the internet. They are over 150 miles apart (240 km.) causing confusion.

The medieval town of Montegiove is on the edge of Umbria near Tuscany, one hour north of Rome on the slower regional train. Confirming this part of the logistics was made difficult by the seeming conflicting information for two places, one old and one newer, on Trip Advisor when planning travel and transportation for our train and car plans. Fano is on the Adriatic Coast using very different trains, roads, etc.

I understand this hotel changed its name (to the same name as the original and separately owned castle in the town of Montegiove) in the mid 2000's and before that this hotel in Fano was called Villa Hagemann.

I am very happy that this hotel in Fano, Le Marche, has lots of nice comments. I am giving this 4 stars just so I do not impact their score. This post is just to help folks like me plan trips and avoid frustration. If somebody is going to Fano on the far east coast instead of trying to be near Orvieto, Cortona, Umbrian and Tuscan sites, then that is great to check out.

I can't seem to find a place on Trip Advisor to make this comment that should help both guests of the actual Castello di Montegiove in Montegiove, Umbria, and this hotel in Fano under different ownership know how to tell them apart.

Maybe a place for comments in the future on the "Maps and Directions" tab instead of a review space would help? I just know the obviously confusing names on trip advisor made planning my own trip more difficult.

Happy Italian travels to all, either in Umbria or the Just be sure to zoom out on the map and call the correct number and get on the right train or car rental site. :)

I had a winderful stay at Castello di Montegiove and associated Villa.
Settings are stunning, restoration work superb, hospitality second to none.
It is a family run business that makes warm and welcoming stay, yet professional and meticulous given the experience and excellent service.
We will return very soon, three hours from Milan is unspoiled heaven for me. Great discovery, also really close to Fano town for a nice stroll in the old town in the evenings.
Don't miss the swim in the fountain!!! Something spectacular...

A stunning hotel with very friendly and accommodating staff. We stayed for 5 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Breakfasts were lovely: croissants, cereal, yoghurt, fruit, juices, ham, cheese, egg, bread, cakes and great coffee. Fano beach and centre was a 5/10 minutes drive away. The pool was great for cooling down and relaxing around, Thank you to all the staff for making us feel so welcome.

castello di montegiove is located on a very quiet hill of Fano. The hotel itself is comfortable and nice, but it is far from the town center and quite difficult to find!
Good breakfast and nice rooms.

A really nice place, with a high quality food and service.
I spent 1 month in Montegiove hotel and I have liked it.
Simply beautiful position with a terrific view of the sea.. really romantic!
But some problems during the business trip: bedrooms just a bit noisy expecially during the night (thin walls maybe), and a bad smell in the corridor everyday..

So many hotels instruct the staff to be polite to customers at all times but often you feel that the "have a nice day" standard line lacks sincerity.
Not here every staff member that I had the pleasure to deal with could not do enough to help you in any way possible.
And to top it all it is a castle.
Highly recomended.

It describes itself as a country house and it is very much like staying in someone's home rather than a Hotel. Its isolated nature is restful and the staff (who spoke excellent English) were extremely helpful and knowledgable about the local area.

Beautiful individual rooms but the ones we were in had no baths - only showers. Also no internet although this is available via the hotel computer.

A lovely terrace over looks the sea (3km away) and has a plunge pool big enough for 4 - 6 people.

There is a driving range and putting green.

The hotel has bikes (including motor assisted bikes) if you want to leave the car behind on a trip to Fano.

Overall a very good stay and a good base from which to explore the region (Urbino etc). The hotel lacks any indoor sitting area and in the winter would not be the place to spend time.
